Semiclassical approach to the decay of protons in circular motion under the influence of gravitational fields
We investigate the possible decay of protons in geodesic circular motion
around neutral compact objects. Weak and strong decay rates and the associated
emitted powers are calculated using a semi-classical approach. Our results are
discussed with respect to distinct ones in the literature, which consider the
decay of accelerated protons in electromagnetic fields. A number of consistency

FGF23 is elevated in multiple myeloma and increases heparanase expression by tumor cells
Multiply myeloma (MM) grows in and destroys bone, where osteocytes secrete FGF23, a hormone which affects phosphate homeostasis and aging. We report that multiple myeloma (MM) cells express receptors for and respond to FGF23. FGF23 increased mRNA for EGR1 and its target heparanase, a pro-osteolytic factor in MM. FGF23 signals through a complex of klotho and a classical FGF receptor (FGFR); both were expressed by MM cell lines and patient samples. Bone marrow plasma cells from 42 MM patients stained positively for klotho, while plasma cells from 8 patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and 6 controls were negative. Intact, active FGF23 was increased 2.9X in sera of MM patients compared to controls. FGF23 was not expressed by human MM cells, but co-culture with mouse bone increased its mRNA. The FGFR inhibitor NVP-BGJ398 blocked the heparanase response to FGF23. NVP-BGJ398 did not inhibit 8226 growth in vitro but significantly suppressed growth in bone and induction of the osteoclast regulator RANK ligand, while decreasing heparanase mRNA. The bone microenvironment provides resistance to some anti-tumor drugs but increased the activity of NVP-BGJ398 against 8226 cells. Chandra X-Ray Observatory observations of the globular cluster M28 and its millisecond pulsar B1821-24
We report here the results of the first Chandra X-Ray Observatory
observations of the globular cluster M28 (NGC 6626). 46 X-ray sources are
detected, of which 12 lie within one core radius of the center. We show that
the apparently extended X-ray core emission seen with the ROSAT HRI is due to
the superposition of multiple discrete sources for which we determine the X-ray
luminosity function down to a limit of about 6xE30 erg/s. For the first time
the unconfused phase-averaged X-ray spectrum of the 3.05-ms pulsar B1821--24 is
measured and found to be best described by a power law with photon index ~ 1.2.
Marginal evidence of an emission line centered at 3.3 keV in the pulsar
spectrum is found, which could be interpreted as cyclotron emission from a
corona above the pulsar's polar cap if the the magnetic field is strongly
different from a centered dipole. The unabsorbed pulsar flux in the 0.5--8.0
keV band is ~3.5xE-13 ergs/s/cm^2. Spectral analysis of the 5 brightest
unidentified sources is presented. Based on the spectral parameters of the
brightest of these sources, we suggest that it is a transiently accreting
neutron star in a low-mass X-ray binary, in quiescence. Fitting its spectrum
with a hydrogen neutron star atmosphere model yields the effective temperature
T_eff^\infty = 90^{+30}_{-10} eV and the radius R_NS^\infty =
14.5^{+6.9}_{-3.8} km. In addition to the resolved sources, we detect fainter,
unresolved X-ray emission from the central core of M28. Using the
Chandra-derived positions, we also report on the result of searching archival
Hubble Space Telescope data for possible optical counterparts.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 22 pages, 8 figures, 5 table
X-ray Fluorescent Fe Kalpha Lines from Stellar Photospheres
X-ray spectra from stellar coronae are reprocessed by the underlying
photosphere through scattering and photoionization events. While reprocessed
X-ray spectra reaching a distant observer are at a flux level of only a few
percent of that of the corona itself, characteristic lines formed by inner
shell photoionization of some abundant elements can be significantly stronger.
The emergent photospheric spectra are sensitive to the distance and location of
the fluorescing radiation and can provide diagnostics of coronal geometry and
abundance. Here we present Monte Carlo simulations of the photospheric Kalpha
doublet arising from quasi-neutral Fe irradiated by a coronal X-ray source.
Fluorescent line strengths have been computed as a function of the height of
the radiation source, the temperature of the ionising X-ray spectrum, and the
viewing angle. We also illustrate how the fluorescence efficiencies scale with
the photospheric metallicity and the Fe abundance. Based on the results we make
three comments: (1) fluorescent Fe lines seen from pre-main sequence stars
mostly suggest flared disk geometries and/or super-solar disk Fe abundances;
(2) the extreme ~1400 mA line observed from a flare on V1486 Ori can be
explained entirely by X-ray fluorescence if the flare itself were partially
eclipsed by the limb of the star; and (3) the fluorescent Fe line detected by
Swift during a large flare on II Peg is consistent with X-ray excitation and
does not require a collisional ionisation contribution. There is no convincing
evidence supporting the energetically challenging explanation of electron
impact excitation for observed stellar Fe Kalpha lines.Comment: 30 pages; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Text messaging: an innovative method of data collection in medical research
BACKGROUND: The ubiquitous use of mobile phones in sending and receiving text messages has become a norm for young people. Undeniably, text messaging has become a new and important communication medium not only in the social realm but in education as well. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using text messaging as a means to collect data for a medical research project.A cross sectional study was carried out during a double blind, randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy and safety of a probiotic in the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The study aim was to assess the response rate of weekly symptom reports via Short Message Service (SMS). The subjects were undergraduates in a private medical university in Malaysia. They were identified through a previous university wide study as suffering from IBS based on Rome III criteria. The subjects were randomly assigned to either the treatment arm receiving a daily probiotic, or the placebo arm. They were required to score their symptoms using eight-item-questionnaires at baseline, and thereafter weekly, for a total of 8 weeks. All subjects were given the choice to communicate their symptom scores by text messaging via mobile phones or by email. SMS text messages were sent to remind trial subjects to attend face-to-face visits and to complete a paper based 34-item-questionnaires on IBS quality of life assessment at baseline and at end of 8 weeks.
FINDINGS: The response rate of weekly symptom scores via Short Message Service (SMS) from a total of 38 subjects was 100%. Through the study, 342 reports were submitted: 33.3% of these were received on the due date without reminder, 60.0% one day after the deadline, after a single reminder, 6.1% 2-3 days after the deadline, after 2-3 reminders and 0.6% 5 days after the deadline, after SMS, phone reminder and face-to-face encounter. All SMS symptom reports, whether on time or late, were complete. With the help of SMS reminder, all trial subjects completed the paper based IBS quality of life assessment at baseline and at end of study.
CONCLUSIONS: This study found using text messaging via mobile phone an excellent instrument for collecting weekly symptom reports in response to trial medication, reminding trial subjects to attend face to face visits and completing more complex paper based evaluation. The 100% response rate of weekly symptom reports was facilitated by using simple number codes for SMS submission
Supergoop Dynamics
We initiate a systematic study of the dynamics of multi-particle systems with
supersymmetric Van der Waals and electron-monopole type interactions. The
static interaction allows a complex continuum of ground state configurations,
while the Lorentz interaction tends to counteract this configurational fluidity
by magnetic trapping, thus producing an exotic low temperature phase of matter
aptly named supergoop. Such systems arise naturally in gauge
theories as monopole-dyon mixtures, and in string theory as collections of
particles or black holes obtained by wrapping D-branes on internal space
cycles. After discussing the general system and its relation to quiver quantum
mechanics, we focus on the case of three particles. We give an exhaustive
enumeration of the classical and quantum ground states of a probe in an
arbitrary background with two fixed centers. We uncover a hidden conserved
charge and show that the dynamics of the probe is classically integrable. In
contrast, the dynamics of one heavy and two light particles moving on a line
shows a nontrivial transition to chaos, which we exhibit by studying the
Poincar\'e sections. Finally we explore the complex dynamics of a probe
particle in a background with a large number of centers, observing hints of
ergodicity breaking. We conclude by discussing possible implications in a
