    Traffic scenario generation technique for piloted simulation studies

    Piloted simulation studies of cockpit traffic display concepts require the development of representative traffic scenarios. With the exception of specific aircraft interaction issues, most research questions can be addressed using traffic scenarios consisting of prerecorded aircraft movements merged together to form a desired traffic pattern. Prerecorded traffic scenarios have distinct research advantages, allowing control of traffic encounters with repeatability of scenarios between different test subjects. A technique is described for generation of prerecorded jet transport traffic scenarios suitable for use in piloted simulation studies. Individual flight profiles for the aircraft in the scenario are created interactively with a computer program designed specifically for this purpose. The profiles are then time-correlated and merged into a complete scenario. This technique was used to create traffic scenarios for the Denver, Colorado area with operations centered at Stapleton International Airport. Traffic scenarios for other areas may also be created using this technique, with appropriate modifications made to the navigation fix locations contained in the flight profile generation program

    On the Magnitude of Dark Energy Voids and Overdensities

    We investigate the clustering of dark energy within matter overdensities and voids. In particular, we derive an analytical expression for the dark energy density perturbations, which is valid both in the linear, quasi-linear and fully non-linear regime of structure formation. We also investigate the possibility of detecting such dark energy clustering through the ISW effect. In the case of uncoupled quintessence models, if the mass of the field is of order the Hubble scale today or smaller, dark energy fluctuations are always small compared to the matter density contrast. Even when the matter perturbations enter the non-linear regime, the dark energy perturbations remain linear. We find that virialised clusters and voids correspond to local overdensities in dark energy, with \delta_{\phi}/(1+w) \sim \Oo(10^{-5}) for voids, \delta_{\phi}/(1+w) \sim \Oo(10^{-4}) for super-voids and \delta_{\phi}/(1+w) \sim \Oo(10^{-5}) for a typical virialised cluster. If voids with radii of 100300Mpc100-300 {\rm Mpc} exist within the visible Universe then δϕ\delta_{\phi} may be as large as 103(1+w)10^{-3}(1+w). Linear overdensities of matter and super-clusters generally correspond to local voids in dark energy; for a typical super-cluster: \delta_{\phi}/(1+w) \sim \Oo(-10^{-5}).     The Abacus Cosmos: A Suite of Cosmological N-body Simulations

    We present a public data release of halo catalogs from a suite of 125 cosmological NN-body simulations from the Abacus project. The simulations span 40 wwCDM cosmologies centered on the Planck 2015 cosmology at two mass resolutions, 4×1010  h1M4\times 10^{10}\;h^{-1}M_\odot and 1×1010  h1M1\times 10^{10}\;h^{-1}M_\odot, in 1.1  h1Gpc1.1\;h^{-1}\mathrm{Gpc} and 720  h1Mpc720\;h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc} boxes, respectively. The boxes are phase-matched to suppress sample variance and isolate cosmology dependence. Additional volume is available via 16 boxes of fixed cosmology and varied phase; a few boxes of single-parameter excursions from Planck 2015 are also provided. Catalogs spanning z=1.5z=1.5 to 0.10.1 are available for friends-of-friends and Rockstar halo finders and include particle subsamples.     A Comparative Analysis of Alliancing and Integrated Project Delivery on Complex Projects: Parallel Systems Sharing a Common Objective

    Relational contracting methods are a natural evolution from the many versions of project delivery that have been developed over the past two decades aimed at increasing the amount of integration and collaboration among mega-project stakeholders. Alliancing was born in the 1990’s in North Sea oilfields and imported down under to Australia and New Zealand where it has used to deliver over 300 complex projects. The litigious environment present in the North American construction sector led project owners to implement partnering programs to enhance the quality of relationships on projects of all sizes delivered using the full spectrum of delivery methods. Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) made its appearance in 2002, employing nonbinding partnering program objectives into multi-party relational contracts. While developed separately, alliancing and IPD share the same objective: an environment where decisions are made on a “best-for-project” basis and all stakeholders share the both the pain and the gain associated with ultimate project performance. This paper chronicles the evolution of project delivery methods, as well as their successes and failures. The paper finds that each approach has been tailored to maximize collaboration within each culture’s legal and business environment. It also finds that alliancing appears to offer the most advantages and has a well-documented record of success. Lastly, the paper recommends that the commercial building project IPD currently used in North America needs to be revised to increase its potential on complex megaprojects

    In this article we explore how the stories an athlete tells throughout life in sport affect her career transition experiences. We base our enquiry on a social constructionist conception of narrative theory which holds that storytelling is integral to the creation and maintenance of identity and sense of self. Life stories were gathered through interviews with two professional women golfers (Christiana and Kandy) over a six‐year period. Through a narrative analysis of structure and form we explored each participant’s stories of living in and withdrawing from professional golf. We suggest Christiana told monological performance‐oriented stories which, while aligning with the culture of elite sport, resulted in an exclusive athletic identity and foreclosure of alternative selves and roles. On withdrawal, Christiana experienced narrative wreckage, identity collapse, mental health difficulties and considerable psychological trauma. In contrast, Kandy told dialogical discovery‐oriented stories which, while being in tension with the dominant performance narrative, created and sustained a multidimensional identity and self. Her stories and identity remained intact, authentic and continuous on withdrawal from tournament golf and she experienced few psychological problems

    Iowa Pavement Asset Management Decision-Making Framework

    Most local agencies in Iowa currently make their pavement treatment decisions based on their limited experience due primarily to lack of a systematic decision-making framework and a decision-aid tool. The lack of objective condition assessment data of agency pavements also contributes to this problem. This study developed a systematic pavement treatment selection framework for local agencies to assist them in selecting the most appropriate treatment and to help justify their maintenance and rehabilitation decisions. The framework is based on an extensive literature review of the various pavement treatment techniques in terms of their technical applicability and limitations, meaningful practices of neighboring states, and the results of a survey of local agencies. The treatment selection framework involves three different steps: pavement condition assessment, selection of technically feasible treatments using decision trees, and selection of the most appropriate treatment considering the return-on-investment (ROI) and other non-economic factors. An Excel-based spreadsheet tool that automates the treatment selection framework was also developed, along with a standalone user guide for the tool. The Pavement Treatment Selection Tool (PTST) for Local Agencies allows users to enter the severity and extent levels of existing distresses and then, recommends a set of technically feasible treatments. The tool also evaluates the ROI of each feasible treatment and, if necessary, it can also evaluate the non-economic value of each treatment option to help determine the most appropriate treatment for the pavement. It is expected that the framework and tool will help local agencies improve their pavement asset management practices significantly and make better economic and defensible decisions on pavement treatment selection
