This article analyses the description of 30 environmental image banks on the Internet. After a short definition of the image banks, documental representation, image retrieval and metadata (EXIF and IPTC), I will analyze various factors to determine the existence (or non-existence) of normalization in caption image: the global profile of image banks and the components of image details, as well in its terminology as in the frequency of use of these components.Furthermore, I will analyze the caption has a label in the image detail or not, and its size (words, phrases, paragraphs), the frequency of use of metadata and finally, I will present documental tools and retrieval presentation.This analysis allows us to conclude there is a large variety of documental description of images on the Internet.Se analiza la descripción de imágenes de 30 bancos de imágenes sobre medio ambiente disponibles en Internet. Se definen los bancos de imágenes, la representación documental, la recuperación de imágenes y los metadatos existentes (EXIF e IPTC). Se analizan varios elementos para ver si existe alguna normalización en la descripción ofreciendo un perfil global de los bancos de imágenes seleccionados. Se analizan los elementos disponibles en las fichas detalles de las imágenes, tanto en la terminología empleada como en la frecuencia de uso de estos elementos. Se determina si el campo de la descripción lleva o no una etiqueta en la ficha detalle y su tamaño (palabras, frase, párrafo o varios párrafos). Se analiza la frecuencia de utilización de los tipos de metadatos. Por último se presentan unas conclusiones sobre las herramientas documentales ofrecidas y se presentan los resultados de las búsquedas de imágenes

Standardization of the content elements of legends and key words in scientific pictures

Se analizan las leyendas y las palabras clave de fotografías científicas sobre el medio ambiente de un banco de imágenes para determinar si existe normalización en el uso de sus elementos de contenido. Los objetivos específicos son: establecer los elementos semánticos utilizados en las leyendas y su estructura, comprobar el nivel del vocabulario empleado en las leyendas y en las palabras clave así como las funciones de Jakobson utilizadas en la leyenda, analizar los niveles de Panofsky en las leyendas y palabras clave. En una primera parte se definen los modelos de Jakobson, Lasswell y Panofsky con vista a caracterizar los elementos de contenido y sus niveles de utilización. En segundo lugar, se explica cómo utilizarlos para analizar la representación documental de las fotografías. Por último, se presentan los resultados con respecto a los elementos normalizados y no normalizados, tanto en la leyenda como en las palabras clave, teniendo en cuenta la influencia que pueden tener en el tema de las fotografías. Para concluir, se proponen algunas mejoras en relación con la normalización de la representación documental de las fotografías.The legends and keywords of scientific photographs about environment from an image bank are analyzed, in order to determine if there is standardization in the use of their content elements. The aims are to establish the semantic elements used in the legends and their structure; to check the level of vocabulary used in legends and keywords, as well as Jakobson´s functions applied in the legend; and to analyse Panofky's levels utilized in legends and keywords. Firstly, the models of Jakobson, Lasswell and Panofsky are defined to characterise the content elements and their utilization levels. Secondly, it is explained how to use them to analyse the documentary representation of the photos. Finally, the results connected with the standardized and non-standardized elements in the legends and key words are presented, taking into account the influence they may have on the photographic themes. To conclude, some improvements in relation to the standardization of documentary representation of photography are recommended

An educational resource for information literacy in higher education: visibility and usability of the e-COMS academic portal

As in today’s knowledge society the Internet is playing an important role in the information literacy of university students the goal of this paper is to analyse, after its first year on the Web, the informational impact of an e-learning resource developed by Granada’s University lecturers (the e-COMS educational portal), a pioneer in Spain for training in information literacy. From the objective and subjective data provided by the own portal and by it users, two different and complementary kinds of analysis (functional and users’) are performed. Assessment of various capabilities, among which visibility and usability stand out, is provided. The highly positive but improvable results offer a detailed analysis of the functional aspects of the portal itself and of the users’ relations with this information resource. From these analyses strengths and weaknesses are extracted and some proposals for improvement are derived

Analysis of the content of nature scientific photographs: proposal of a pattern

Se propone una plantilla para el análisis de contenido de fotografías científicas de la naturaleza. En primer lugar, se define la fotografía científica, su público y los condicionantes de su análisis. En segundo lugar, se destaca la importancia del texto acompañando las fotografías para su recuperación. En tercer lugar, se describen los modelos de Lasswell, de Panofsky y Shatford y la semiología para el análisis de las fotografías, antes de detallar el método seguido para el análisis de contenido. Por último, se presenta la funcionalidad de la plantilla para la redacción de un resumen y asignación de descriptores. Se concluye destacando su interés para encontrar las pistas informativas transmitidas por las fotografías y la necesaria colaboración entre fotógrafo y documentalista.This article proposes a pattern to analyse the content of scientific photographs. In a first part, it defines scientific photographs, its public and its analysis. In a second part, it deals with the importance of the text which encloses the photographs to be retrieved. In a third part, it describes the Lasswell model, the Panofsky and Shatford models, and the semiology. The method followed to analyse photographs is then detailed. In a fourth part, it stresses how useful is the pattern statistically to write an abstract and to assign keywords, before it concludes about the importance to detect the informative clues transmitted by the photographer and the necessary collaboration between photographer and information professional
