The implementation of health research in the school environment for children, through educational strategies within an interdisciplinary perspective, contributes to a better understanding of the expanded concept of health. The objective of this study was to identify the knowledge students already had about medicinal plants and to promote awareness about the integration of health and environment, through pedagogical practices, with students from the 4th and 5th years at the Municipal School Professor Moabh Cristal FĂ©lix, Teixeira de Freitas, Bahia. The survey was conducted through semi-structured questionnaires, dialogued exhibitions and educational workshops, based on three thematic axes: âWhat is health?â, âThe secret of plantsâ and âEarth, my homeâ. It was found that 68 use medicinal plants. Tea was the most cited form of use (88), followed by syrup (37). The main plants mentioned by the students were erva-cidreira (54); boldo (37); capim da lapa (35); erva doce (24) and hortelĂŁ (10). Most of the plants were harvested in their own homes (74) and in their neighborsÂŽ (24); 42% of students reported that their mothers manipulated the plants, followed by grandmothers, with 27%, and fathers, 11%. It is interesting to note that 74% of students do not consider that plants can also cause health problems. The workshops contributed to incorporate new concepts of what health is, to value the benefits of medicinal plants, as well as to show the importance of self-care, which must start from an individual and environmental context.
