    Four problems were defined which had aspects which would be reasonably assigned to an interdisciplinary design team. The design problems are: (1) design of a thermal shield for a lunar telescope (thermal protection for a lunar telescope); (2) selenotextile shielding structure (a structure to protect a lunar habitat from intense solar radiation of tubes of woven polytetrafluoroethylene coated fiberglass fabric); (3) pneumatically assisted elbow joint design for the NASA Zero-prebreathe suit (will allow astronauts to make the transition from a high pressure internal environment to a lower pressure suit without spending time in an air lock); and (4) electrochemical system to power assist an astronaut's finger joints (assist in the movement of an astronaut's distal and proximal interphalangeal finger joints)

    The criminal justice system and people on the autism spectrum: perspectives on awareness and identification

    Individuals with a diagnosis of autism are seven times more likely to be represented in criminal justice statistics compared to people without this diagnosis (Debbaunt, 2004). This signals the need for further investigation into the practices of professionals working in these areas; in particular, the extent of their awareness and understanding of autism. This paper reports on a qualitative study undertaken with 30 people working in probation, a community rehabilitation company, police, and liaison and diversion services in a county in the North of England. Interviews were conducted between July and September 2017. While a number of criminal justice professionals possessed some experience of autism in their personal or professional practice, several professionals struggled to accurately identify what autism is, and how it could impact on an individual’s communication style; which could represent a barrier to effective communication between providers and service users. These results add to the body of literature on the subject of criminal justice services and alleged offenders who are on the autism spectrum and aims to raise awareness and promote discussion on this important subject

    A design for a machine to produce hollow, continuous fiber reinforced composite rods of lunar glass and a liquid crystalline matrix using the pultrusion process is presented. The glass fiber will be produced from the lunar surface, with the machine and matrix being transported to the moon. The process is adaptable to the low gravity and near-vacuum environment of the moon through the use of a thermoplastic matrix in fiber form as it enters the pultrusion process. With a power consumption of 5k W, the proposed machine will run continuously, unmanned in fourteen day cycles, matching the length of moon days. A number of dies could be included that would allow the machine to produce rods of varying diameter, I-beams, angles, and other structural members. These members could then be used for construction on the lunar surface or transported for use in orbit. The benefits of this proposal are in the savings in weight of the cargo each lunar mission would carry. The supply of glass on the moon is effectively endless, so enough rods would have to be produced to justify its transportation, operation, and capital cost. This should not be difficult as weight on lunar mission is at a premium

    Adults with a diagnosis of autism: personal experiences of engaging with regional criminal justice services

    This paper reports on interviews undertaken with four adults with a diagnosis of autism, about their experiences of engaging with regional Criminal Justice Services (CJS) as victims, witnesses or perpetrators of a crime. Participants were recruited through an autism-specific charity, Triple A Project (All About Autism). These interviews comprised the second phase of a two-stage project; the first phase involved interviews with members of the charity and revealed differences in perceptual frames of reference between individual participants with a diagnosis of autism and CJS professionals that led to miscommunication and misunderstanding. Key findings from the research suggest that specific challenges with lateral thought and interpretation can mean that individuals on the autism spectrum are potentially vulnerable to finding themselves implicated as perpetrators or victims of a criminal act. This research represents an important development concerning the question of autism and criminality; the researchers sought to extend the academic discourse beyond an examination of the perspectives of professionals to give voice to the perspectives of experts by experience with a diagnosis of autism

    Expert by Experience involvement in Mental Health Nursing Education: The co-production of standards between Experts by Experience and Academics in Mental Health Nursing

    Introduction: Involving people with lived experience of mental distress in mental health nursing education has gained considerable traction yet broader implementation remains ad-hoc and tokenistic. Effective involvement requires curricula be informed by lived experience of service use. Aim: To develop standards to underpin expert by experience involvement in mental health nursing education based on lived experience of service use. Methods: Phase one used qualitative descriptive methods, involving focus groups with service users (n=50) from six countries to explore perceptions of service user involvement in mental health nursing education. Phase two utilised these findings through consensus building to co-produce standards to support Experts by Experience involvement in mental health nursing education. Results: Three themes emerged in Phase one: enablers and barriers, practical and informational support, and emotional and appraisal support. These themes underpinned development of the standards, which reflect nine processes: induction and orientation, external supervision, supportive teamwork, preparation for teaching and assessing, 'intervision', mutual mentorship, pre and post debriefing, role clarity and equitable payment. Conclusions: These standards form the framework entitled; Standards for Co-production of Education (Mental Health Nursing) (SCo-PE [MHN]).     Practice Guidelines for Co-Production of Mental Health Nursing Education

    COMMUNE (Co-production of Mental Health Nursing Education) is an Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership Project based on the collaboration of experts by experience (EBE) and mental health nursing academics from six European universities and the University of Canberra in Australia. Its purpose was to advance the involvement of those who have experiences of mental health service use (EBE) in mental health nursing education. The project combined experiential and academic knowledge, with the aim of co-producing a module on ‘mental health recovery’ for undergraduate nursing students; a module that was taught to the students by EBE. Principles of co-production where followed as much as possible, involving EBE in all stages of the process, from grant application to dissemination. The project tried to move beyond typical service user involvement and towards co-creation of knowledge, where power differentials are acknowledged and equity issues addressed. Barriers to meeting these goals were experienced and will be discussed in this Guidelines. We hope that these Practice Guidelines will be useful for those who intend to co-produce learning programs or modules in mental health nursing and inspire others to follow similar paths and learn from our experiences, positive or otherwise. These Guidelines provide an overview of our experiences, learnings, limitations and barriers.The Commune team decided on the term ‘Expert by Experience’ (EBE) to describe the members of the team and other collaborators who has lived experience of mental distress. Other more commonly used terms are ‘service user’, ‘consumer’ and ‘people with mental illness.’ As not all experts by experience are mental health care users, and what constitutes an illness is highly debated, the team decided on a term that more correctly describes and value lived experience.Erasmus

    What Do People Think About Think?

    A new sense of the verb think has recently developed in the\ud English language, new because think can now take a direct object\ud that is a noun phrase, without requiring an object complement.\ud The question addressed in this study was whether processing\ud sentences with think + D.O. is more difficult than processing those\ud with the older forms. The answer to this question seems to be a\ud function of how acceptable this form of think is today, as\ud determined by analyzing response times and subject evaluations.\ud There was evidence that processing this form is indeed more\ud difficult, though this is manifested only in relatively short\ud sentences. The new think is thus somewhat accepted, but not\ud completely so. Subject evaluations of better and worse think +\ud D.O. constructions indicate that this form is common enough that\ud people have definite restrictions on just what environments it can\ud occur in. These restrictions further imply a distinct semantic\ud meaning associated with the new think as compared to its older\ud senses
