The Impact of Capital Inflows on Emerging East Asian Economies: Is Too Much Money Chasing Too Little Good?

    Get PDF
In recent years, emerging East Asian economies have experienced large capital inflows-especially a surge in portfolio inflows-and an appreciation of asset prices such as equities, land, and both nominal and real exchange rates. The paper reviews why a surge in capital inflows can increase asset prices, and then empirically investigates the effects by employing a panel vector autoregression (VAR) model. The empirical results suggest that capital inflows have indeed contributed to the asset price appreciation in this region, although capital inflow shocks explain a relatively small part of asset price fluctuations. How to manage these capital inflows is also discussed.Capital inflows; portfolio inflows; asset prices

Long-term Outcomes of Tension-free Vaginal Tape Procedure for Treatment of Female Stress Urinary Incontinence with Intrinsic Sphincter Deficiency

Purpose To assess the long-term outcomes of tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) with intrinsic sphincter deficiency (ISD) and to identify influencing factors for failure in these cases. Methods A total of 136 women who underwent TVT procedures with minimum follow-up duration of 3 years were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups (non-ISD and ISD groups) based on preoperative urodynamic studies. Patient outcomes were assessed from retrospective chart review and telephone research. Cure was defined as the subjective resolution of SUI in any circumstances. Improvement was defined as the subjective improvement of SUI without complete resolution. Failure was defined as the subjective lack of improvement of SUI. Patients in ISD group were subdivided into two subgroups (cure and non-cure groups) and were compared to identify influencing factors for TVT procedure failure. Results Eighty-nine patients were in non-ISD group, and 47 in ISD group. The mean follow-up durations were 50.3±9.2 and 49.7±9.7 months, respectively. Subjective cure rate was 75.3% for non-ISD group, and 76.7% for ISD group (P>0.05). Improvement rate was 6.7% for non-ISD group, and 2.1% for ISD group (P>0.05). Satisfaction scores was 3.8±1.2 points in the non-ISD group, and 3.5±1.2 points in ISD group (P>0.05). In ISD subgroups, VLPP was 41.9±12.0 cmH2O for non-cure group, and 50.5±8.6 cmH2O for cure group, and was the only factor that showed significant statistical difference between the two subgroups (P=0.011). Conclusions With our long-term results, TVT is an effective treatment even in women with ISD. However, ISD patients with low VLPP should be counseled carefully about TVT outcome

Fully automatic segmentation of intima/adventitia of the vessel using Bezier curve from intravascular ultrasound

Although medical image segmentation field is regarded as one of most established fields, still fully automatic segmentation to extract target object with high accuracy from intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is very active area of research. In this paper, we propose a fully automatic morphological approach using Bezier curve in interpolating the boundaries of intima/adventitia of the vessel from IVUS with careful binarization algorithms. In experiment with 800 IVUS images, the proposed method is as good as fuzzy C-means based approach in comparison with human expert’s result with 84.4% satisfaction and better than other morphological method in all performance indices of curve fitting with 97.02% in accuracy and 58.19% in precision

Differentiating the Impact of Nitrogen Chemical States on Optical Properties of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots

The optical properties of top-down synthesized oxidized graphene quantum dots (ox-GQDs) and nitrogen-incorporating graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) along a range of hydrothermal treatment temperatures were observed. By controlling the hydrothermal treatment temperature, different chemical states of nitrogen atoms were incorporated into GQDs. Below 150 °C, edge-terminating amines and amides dominated the nitrogen content of N-GQDs. Above 150 °C, nitrogen was primarily present in the forms of pyridinic, pyrrolic and quaternary N. In addition to the absorbance and emission profiles of ox-GQDs and N-GQDs, pH-dependent emission spectra were collected to probe chemical states of nitrogen atoms and investigate the relationship between nitrogen location and photoluminescence
