    On Optimal Neighbor Discovery

    Mobile devices apply neighbor discovery (ND) protocols to wirelessly initiate a first contact within the shortest possible amount of time and with minimal energy consumption. For this purpose, over the last decade, a vast number of ND protocols have been proposed, which have progressively reduced the relation between the time within which discovery is guaranteed and the energy consumption. In spite of the simplicity of the problem statement, even after more than 10 years of research on this specific topic, new solutions are still proposed even today. Despite the large number of known ND protocols, given an energy budget, what is the best achievable latency still remains unclear. This paper addresses this question and for the first time presents safe and tight, duty-cycle-dependent bounds on the worst-case discovery latency that no ND protocol can beat. Surprisingly, several existing protocols are indeed optimal, which has not been known until now. We conclude that there is no further potential to improve the relation between latency and duty-cycle, but future ND protocols can improve their robustness against beacon collisions.Comment: Conference of the ACM Special Interest Group on Data Communication (ACM SIGCOMM), 201

    Optimal operation of interconnected energy hubs by using decomposed hybrid particle swarm and interior-point approach

    The Energy Hub has become an important concept for formally optimizing multi-carrier energy infrastructure to increase system flexibility and efficiency. The existence of energy storage within energy hubs enables the dynamic coordination of energy supply and demand against varying energy tariffs and local renewable generation to save energy cost. The battery lifetime cost may be included in the optimization objective function to better utilize battery for long term use. However, the operational optimization of an interconnected energy hub system with battery lifetime considered presents a highly constrained, multi-period, non-convex problem. This paper proposes Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) hybridised with a numerical method, referred to collectively as the decomposition technique. It decouples the complicated optimization problem into sub-problems, namely the scheduling of storage and other elements in the energy hub system, and separately solves these by PSO and the numerical method ‘interior-point’. This approach thus overcomes the disadvantages of numerical methods and artificial intelligence algorithms that suffer from convergence only to a local minimum or prohibitive computation times, respectively. The new approach is applied to an example two-hub system and a three-hub system over a time horizon of 24 h. It is also applied to a large eleven-hub system to test the performance of the approach and discuss the potential applications. The results demonstrate that the method is capable of achieving very near the global minimum, verified by an analytical approach, and is fast enough to allow an online, receding time horizon implementation.</p

    Changing trend of HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis C among Men Who Have Sex with Men in China

    Dearth of information regarding the trend and correlates of HIV, syphilis and Hepatitis C (HCV) in a country-wide sample of understudied though high-risk Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) called for a comprehensive serial cross-sectional study. Using a multistage mixed-method strategy, 171,311 MSM from 107 selected cities/counties in 30 provinces of mainland China, were interviewed and tested. Descriptive, bivariate, multivariate and Cochran-Armitage trend analyses were conducted using SAS 9.2. During 2009-13, recent (71.5% to 78.6%, p < 0.001) and consistent (40.4% to 48.8%, p < 0.001) condom use as well as condom use during commercial anal sex (46.5% to 55.0%, p < 0.001) were increasing. In contrast, commercial anal sex with male (11.9% to 7.1%, p < 0.001) and drug use (1.9% to 0.8%, p < 0.001) were decreasing over time. HIV prevalence increased gradually (5.5% to 7.3%, p < 0.001), while syphilis (9.0% to 6.3%, p < 0.001) and HCV prevalence (1.5% to 0.7%, p < 0.001) decreased over time. A positive correlation was observed between HIV and syphilis prevalence (r = 0.38). HIV infection was associated with HIV-related knowledge, services and injecting drug use. An increasing trend of HIV prevalence was observed during 2009–13 among MSM in China. While gradual reduction of risk behaviors along with syphilis and HCV prevalence supported expansion of testing and prevention services, increasing HIV burden called for deeper thematic investigations

    Short-term ONX-0914 administration: performance and muscle phenotype in Mdx mice

    Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe muscle-wasting disease. Although the lack of dystrophin protein is the primary defect responsible for the development of DMD, secondary disease complications such as persistent inflammation contribute greatly to the pathogenesis and the time-dependent progression of muscle destruction. The immunoproteasome is a potential therapeutic target for conditions or diseases mechanistically linked to inflammation. In this study, we explored the possible effects of ONX-0914 administration, an inhibitor specific for the immunoproteasome subunit LMP7 (ß5i), on motor performance, muscular pathology and protein degradation in 7-week old MDX mice, an age when the dystrophic muscles show extensive degeneration and regeneration. ONX-0914 (10 mg/kg) was injected subcutaneously on Day 2, 4, and 6. The mice were evaluated for physical performance (walking speed and strength) on Day 1 and 8. We show that this short-term treatment of ONX-0914 in MDX mice did not alter strength nor walking speed. The physical performance findings were consistent with no change in muscle inflammatory infiltration, percentage of central nuclei and proteasome content. Taken together, muscle structure and function in the young adult MDX mouse model are not altered with ONX-0914 treatment, indicating the administration of ONX-0914 during this critical time period does not exhibit any detrimental effects and may be an effective treatment of secondary complications of muscular dystrophy after further investigations.Published versio

    Spatiotemporal Scan and Age-Period-Cohort Analysis of Hepatitis C Virus in Henan, China: 2005–2012

    Background: Studies have shown that hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection increased during the past decades in China. However, little evidence is available on when, where, and who were infected with HCV. There are gaps in knowledge on the epidemiological burden and evolution of the HCV epidemic in China. Methods: Data on HCV cases were collected by the disease surveillance system from 2005 to 2012 to explore the epidemic in Henan province. Spatiotemporal scan statistics and age-period-cohort (APC) model were used to examine the effects of age, period, birth cohort, and spatiotemporal clustering. Results: 177,171 HCV cases were reported in Henan province between 2005 and 2012. APC modelling showed that the HCV reported rates significantly increased in people aged > 50 years. A moderate increase in HCV reported rates was observed for females aged about 25 years. HCV reported rates increased over the study period. Infection rates were greatest among people born between 1960 and 1980. People born around 1970 had the highest relative risk of HCV infection. Women born between 1960 and 1980 had a five-fold increase in HCV infection rates compared to men, for the same birth cohort. Spatiotemporal mapping showed major clustering of cases in northern Henan, which probably evolved much earlier than other areas in the province. Conclusions: Spatiotemporal mapping and APC methods are useful to help delineate the evolution of the HCV epidemic. Birth cohort should be part of the criteria screening programmes for HCV in order to identify those at highest risk of infection and unaware of their status. As Henan is unique in the transmission route for HCV, these methods should be used in other high burden provinces to help identify subpopulations at risk

    Phytonutrient genistein is a survival factor for pancreatic β-cells via GPR30-mediated mechanism

    We previously discovered that phytonutrient genistein rapidly activates cAMP signaling in β-cells and improves islet mass in diabetic mice. However, the mechanism underlying these actions of genistein is still unclear. Here, we show that pharmacological or molecular inhibition of Gαs blocked genistein-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity in plasma membrane and intracellular cAMP production in INS1 cells and islets. Further, genistein stimulation of cAMP generation was abolished in islets exposed to a specific GPR30 inhibitor G15 or islets from GPR30 deficient (GPR30−/−) mice. In vivo, dietary provision of genistein (0.5 g/kg diet) significantly mitigated streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemia in male WT mice, which was associated with improved blood insulin levels and pancreatic islet mass and survival, whereas these effects were absent in Gpr30−/− mice. Genistein treatment promoted survival of INS1 cells and human islets chronically exposed to palmitate and high glucose. At molecular level, genistein activated CREB phosphorylation and subsequently induced Bcl-2 expression, and knockdown of CREB diminished the protective effect of genistein on β-cells induced by lipoglucotoxicity. Finally, deletion of GPR30 in β-cells or islets ablated genistein-induced CREB phosphorylation and its cytoprotective effect.     Preliminary study based on methylation and transcriptome gene sequencing of lncRNAs and immune infiltration in hypopharyngeal carcinoma

    BackgroundHypopharyngeal squamous cell cancer (HSCC) is one of the most malignant tumors of the head and neck. It is not easy to detect in the early stage due to its hidden location; thus, lymph node metastasis is highly likely at diagnosis, leading to a poor prognosis. It is believed that epigenetic modification is related to cancer invasion and metastasis. However, the role of m6A-related lncRNA in the tumor microenvironment (TME) of HSCC remains unclear.MethodsThe whole transcriptome and methylation sequencing of 5 pairs of HSCC tissues and adjacent tissues were performed to identify the methylation and transcriptome profiles of lncRNAs. The biological significance of lncRNAs differentially expressing the m6A peak was analyzed by Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes. By constructing an m6A lncRNA-microRNA network, the mechanism of m6A lncRNAs in HSCC was analyzed. The relative expression levels of selected lncRNAs were examined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The CIBERSORT algorithm was used to evaluate the relative proportion of immune cell infiltration in HSCC and paracancerous tissues.ResultsBased on an in-depth analysis of the sequencing results, 14413 differentially expressed lncRNAs were revealed, including 7329 up-regulated and 7084 down-regulated lncRNAs. Additionally, 4542 up-methylated and 2253 down-methylated lncRNAs were detected. We demonstrated methylation patterns and gene expression profiles of lncRNAs of HSCC transcriptome. In the intersection analysis of lncRNAs and methylated lncRNAs, 51 lncRNAs with up-regulated transcriptome and methylation and 40 lncRNAs with down-regulated transcriptome and methylation were screened, and significantly differentiated lncRNAs were further studied. In the immune cell infiltration analysis, B cell memory was significantly elevated in cancer tissue, while γδT cell amount was significantly decreased.Conclusionm6A modification of lncRNAs might be involved in HSCC pathogenesis. Infiltration of immune cells in HSCC might provide a new direction for its treatment. This study provides new insights for exploring the possible HSCC pathogenesis and searching for new potential therapeutic targets

    Sirt1 coordinates with ERα to regulate autophagy and adiposity

    Sex difference in adiposity has long been recognized but the mechanism remains incompletely understood. Previous studies suggested that adiposity was regulated by autophagy in response to energy status change. Here, we show that the energy sensor Sirt1 mediates sex difference in adiposity by regulating autophagy and adipogenesis in partnership with estrogen receptor α (ERα). Autophagy and adipogenesis were suppressed by Sirt1 activation or overexpression, which was associated with reduced sex difference in adiposity. Mechanistically, Sirt1 deacetylated and activated AKT and STAT3, resulting in suppression of autophagy and adipogenesis via mTOR-ULK1 and p55 cascades. ERα induced Sirt1 expression and inhibited autophagy in adipocytes, while silencing Sirt1 reversed the effects of ERα on autophagy and promoted adipogenesis. Moreover, Sirt1 deacetylated ERα, which constituted a positive feedback loop in the regulation of autophagy and adiposity. Our results revealed a new mechanism of Sirt1 regulating autophagy in adipocytes and shed light on sex difference in adiposity

    YCuTe_2: a member of a new class of thermoelectric materials with CuTe_4-based layered structure

    Intrinsically doped samples of YCuTe_2 were prepared by solid state reaction of the elements. Based on the differential scanning calorimetry and the high temperature X-ray diffraction analyses, YCuTe_2 exhibits a first order phase transition at ∼440 K from a low-temperature-phase crystallizing in the space group P^(bar)3 with combining P^(bar)3m1 to a high-temperature-phase in P^(bar)3 with combining macron]. Above the phase transition temperature, partially ordered Cu atoms become completely disordered in the crystal structure. Small increases to the Cu content are observed to favour the formation of the high temperature phase. We find no indication of superionic Cu ions as for binary copper chalcogenides (e.g., Cu_2Se or Cu_2Te). All investigated samples exhibit very low thermal conductivities (as low as ∼0.5 W m^(−1) K^(−1) at 800 K) due to highly disordered Cu atoms. Electronic structure calculations are employed to better understand the high thermoelectric efficiency for YCuTe_2. The maximum thermoelectric figure of merit, zT, is measured to be ∼0.75 at 780 K for Y_(0.96)Cu_(1.08)Te_2, which is promising for mid-temperature thermoelectric applications

    Aridity-driven shift in biodiversity–soil multifunctionality relationships

Both plant and soil microbial diversity have been reported to regulate ecosystem multifunctionality, but how their relative importance varies along environmental gradients remains poorly understood. Here, we relate plant and microbial diversity to soil multifunctionality across 130 dryland sites along a 4,000 km aridity gradient in northern China. Our results show a strong positive association between plant species richness and soil multifunctionality in less arid regions, whereas microbial diversity, in particular of fungi, is positively associated with multifunctionality in more arid regions. This shift in the relationships between plant or microbial diversity and soil multifunctionality occur at an aridity level of ∼0.8, the boundary between semiarid and arid climates, which is predicted to advance geographically ∼28% by the end of the current century. Our study highlights that biodiversity loss of plants and soil microorganisms may have especially strong consequences under low and high aridity conditions, respectively, which calls for climate-specific biodiversity conservation strategies to mitigate the effects of aridification
