    Pathways from International Society to National Legislature: Introduction and Co-Sponsorship of the Anti-Landmine Norm in the Korean National Assembly

    Translated from an article published in the Korean Political Science Review 44 (3): 27-52, 2010 with permission from the Korean Political Science Association.This paper identifies the two paths where the Ottawa Treaty to prohibit the use of antipersonnel landmines has been introduced into the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea: constituency politics and progressive transnational advocacy. National Assemblymen who have minefield fields in their districts have been active in promoting the norm to clear landmines; those who have been involved in progressive transnational advocacy networks actively participate in the law-making process to provide assistances to landmine victims and clear anti-personnel landmines. In addition, this paper shows that National Assemblymens ideological position has stronger impacts than their partisan identification in the cosponsorship of the two bills related with anti-personnel landmine issues at the National Assembly in South Korea.This project was funded by the Korean Institute of Legislative Studies in 2009

    Electrochemical Investigation of High-Performance Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Based on Molybdenum for Preparation of Counter Electrode

    In order to improve the photocurrent conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), we studied an alternative conductor for the counter electrode and focused on molybdenum (Mo) instead of conventional fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO). Because Mo has a similar work function to FTO for band alignment, better formability of platinum (Pt), and a low electric resistance, using a counter electrode made of Mo instead of FTO lead to the enhancement of the catalytic reaction of the redox couple, reduce the interior resistance of the DSSCs, and prevent energy-barrier formation. Using electrical measurements under a 1-sun condition (100 mW/cm(2), AM 1.5), we determined that the fill factor (FF) and photocurrent conversion efficiency (eta) of DSSCs with a Mo electrode were respectively improved by 7.75% and 5.59% with respect to those of DSSCs with an FTO electrode. Moreover, we have investigated the origin of the improved performance through surface morphology analyses such as scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical analyses including cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy

    As a dynamic organelle, mitochondria continuously fuse and divide with adjacent mitochondria. Imbalance in mitochondria dynamics leads to their dysfunction, which implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. However, how mitochondria alteration and glucose defect contribute to pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is still largely unknown. Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) is an essential regulator for mitochondria fission. Among various posttranslational modifications, O-GlcNAcylation plays a role as a sensor for nutrient and oxidative stress. In this study, we identified that Drp1 is regulated by O-GlcNAcylation in AD models. Treatment of AĪ² as well as PugNAc resulted in mitochondrial fragmentation in neuronal cells. Moreover, we found that AD mice brain exhibits an upregulated Drp1 O-GlcNAcylation. However, depletion of OGT inhibited Drp1 O-GlcNAcylation in AĪ²-treated cells. In addition, overexpression of O-GlcNAc defective Drp1 mutant (T585A and T586A) decreased Drp1 O-GlcNAcylation and AĪ²-induced mitochondria fragmentation. Taken together, these finding suggest that AĪ² regulates mitochondrial fission by increasing O-GlcNAcylation of Drp1

    Gene-based copy number variation study reveals a microdeletion at 12q24 that influences height in the Korean population

    AbstractHeight is a classic polygenic trait with high heritability (h2=0.8). Recent genome-wide association studies have revealed many independent loci associated with human height. In addition, although many studies have reported an association between copy number variation (CNV) and complex diseases, few have explored the relationship between CNV and height. Recent studies reported that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are highly correlated with common CNVs, suggesting that it is warranted to survey CNVs to identify additional genetic factors affecting heritable traits such as height.This study tested the hypothesis that there would be CNV regions (CNVRs) associated with height nearby genes from the GWASs known to affect height. We identified regions containing >1% copy number deletion frequency from 3667 population-based cohort samples using the Illumina HumanOmni1-Quad BeadChip. Among the identified CNVRs, we selected 15 candidate regions that were located within 1Mb of 283 previously reported genes. To assess the effect of these CNVRs on height, statistical analyses were conducted with samples from a case group of 370 taller (upper 10%) individuals and a control group of 1828 individuals (lower 50%).We found that a newly identified 17.7kb deletion at chromosomal position 12q24.33, approximately 171.6kb downstream of GPR133, significantly correlated with height; this finding was validated using quantitative PCR. These results suggest that CNVs are potentially important in determining height and may contribute to height variation in human populations

    Probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 and acidophilus R0052) Reduce the Expression of Toll-Like Receptor 4 in Mice with Alcoholic Liver Disease

    Objective The role of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR 4) in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) has been widely established. We evaluated the biological effects of probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 and acidophilus R0052), KRG (Korea red ginseng), and urushiol (Rhus verniciflua Stokes) on ALD, including their effects on normal and high-fat diet in mice. Methods One hundred C57BL/6 mice were classified into normal (N) and high-fat diet (H) groups. Each group was divided into 5 sub-groups: control, alcohol, alcohol+probiotics, alcohol+KRG, and alcohol+urushiol. A liver function test, histology, electron-microscopy, interleukin (IL)-1Ī², tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-Ī±, IL-6, and IL-10, and TLR 4 were evaluated and compared. Results In the N group, probiotics, KRG, and urushiol significantly reduced levels of TNF-Ī± (12.3Ā±5.1, 13.4Ā±3.9, and 12.1Ā±4.3 vs. 27.9Ā±15.2 pg/mL) and IL-1Ī² (108.4Ā±39.4, 75.0Ā±51.0, and 101.1Ā±26.8 vs. 162.4Ā±37.5 pg/mL), which were increased by alcohol. Alcohol-induced TLR 4 expression was reduced by probiotics and urushiol (0.7Ā±0.2, and 0.8Ā±0.1 vs. 1.0Ā±0.3, p<0.001). In the H group, IL-10 was significantly increased by probiotics and KRG, compared with alcohol (25.3Ā±15.6 and 20.4Ā±6.2 vs. 7.6Ā±5.6 pg/mL) and TLR 4 expression was reduced by probiotics (0.8Ā±0.2 vs. 1.0Ā±0.3, p = 0.007). Conclusions Alcohol-induced TLR 4 expression was down-regulated by probiotics in the normal and high-fat diet groups. Probiotics, KRG, and urushiol might be effective in the treatment of ALD by regulating the gut-liver axis

    AbstractBackgroundRoles of immune reaction and toll-like receptor-4 (TLR-4) have widely been established in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD).MethodsWe evaluated the biologic efficacy of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG), urushiol, and probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 and Lactobacillus acidophilus R0052) in mouse models of ALD. Sixty C57BL/6 mice were equally divided into six feeding groups for 10 weeks: normal diet, alcohol, control, alcoholĀ +Ā KRG, alcoholĀ +Ā urushiol, and alcoholĀ +Ā probiotics. Alcohol was administered via a Lieberā€“DeCarli liquid diet containing 10% alcohol. TLR-4 expression, proinflammatory cytokines, and histology, as well as the results of liver function tests were evaluated and compared.ResultsNo between-group differences were observed with regard to liver function. TLR-4 levels were significantly lower in the KRG, urushiol, and probiotics groups than in the alcohol group (0.37Ā Ā±Ā 0.06Ā ng/mL, 0.39Ā Ā±Ā 0.12Ā ng/mL, and 0.33Ā Ā±Ā 0.07Ā ng/mL, respectively, vs. 0.88Ā Ā±Ā 0.31Ā ng/mL; pĀ <Ā 0.05). Interleukin-1Ī² levels in liver tissues were decreased among the probiotics and KRG groups. The tumor necrosis factor-Ī± level of liver tissue was decreased in the KRG group.ConclusionThe pathological findings showed that alcohol-induced steatosis was significantly reduced by KRG and urushiol. As these agents improve immunologic capacity, they may be considered in potential anti-ALD treatments

    Photobiocidal-triboelectric nanolayer coating of photosensitizer/silica-alumina for reusable and visible-light-driven antibacterial/antiviral air filters

    Outbreaks of airborne pathogens pose a major threat to public health. Here we present a single-step nanocoating process to endow commercial face mask filters with photobiocidal activity, triboelectric filtration capability, and washability. These functions were successfully achieved with a composite nanolayer of silica-alumina (Si-Al) sol-gel, crystal violet (CV) photosensitizer, and hydrophobic electronegative molecules of 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTES). The transparent Si-Al matrix strongly immobilized the photosensitizer molecules while dispersing them spatially, thus suppressing self-quenching. During nanolayer formation, PFOTES was anisotropically rearranged on the Si-Al matrix, promoting moisture resistance and triboelectric charging of the Si-Al/PFOTES-CV (SAPC)-coated filter. The SAPC nanolayer stabilized the photoexcited state of the photosensitizer and promoted redox reaction. Compared to pure-photosensitizer-coated filters, the SAPC filter showed substantially higher photobiocidal efficiency (āˆ¼99.99 % for bacteria and a virus) and photodurability (āˆ¼83 % reduction in bactericidal efficiency for the pure-photosensitizer filter but āˆ¼0.34 % for the SAPC filter after 72Ā h of light irradiation). Moreover, after five washes with detergent, the SAPC filter maintained its photobiocidal and filtration performance, proving its reusability potential. Therefore, this SAPC nanolayer coating provides a practical strategy for manufacturing an antimicrobial and reusable mask filter for use during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

    Progression of Prostate Cancer Despite an Extremely Low Serum Level of Prostate-Specific Antigen

    A 61-year-old man who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer 9 years ago and had been treated with pelvic irradiation and intermittent androgen deprivation therapy visited the emergency room because of back pain and weakness in both legs. Spine magnetic resonance imaging showed a lumbar epidural mass and spine metastasis. The whole-body workup revealed multiple metastases to the lymph nodes, bone, liver, and lung. The serum prostate-specific antigen was 0.02 ng/ml. He underwent laminectomy, posterior fixation, and epidural mass excision, and metastatic adenocarcinoma from the prostate was diagnosed. The patient underwent 1 cycle of docetaxel-based chemotherapy. More chemotherapy could not be done because of his general weakness. The patient died one month later of multiple organ failure

    Right Hemisphere Lateralization in Neural Connectivity Within Fronto-Parietal Networks in Non-human Primates During a Visual Reaching Task

    A fronto-parietal network, comprised of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) has been proposed to be involved in planning and guiding movement. However, the issue of how the network is expressed across the bilateral cortical area according to the effector's side remains unclear. In this study, we tested these questions using electrocorticographic (ECoG) recordings in non-human primates and using a simple visual guided reaching task that induced a left or right hand response based on relevant cues provided for the task. The findings indicate that right hemisphere lateralized network patterns in which the right PMd was strongly coordinated with bilateral PPC immediately after presentation of the movement cue occurred, while the coherence with the left PMd was not enhanced. No difference was found in the coherence pattern between the effector's side (left hand or right hand), but the strength of coherence was different, in that animals showed a higher coherence in the right hand response compared to the left. Our data support that right lateralization in long-range phase synchrony in the 10ā€“20 Hz low beta band is involved in motor preparation stage, irrespective of the upcoming effector's side
