    Empathy as the Moral Sense?

    In his recent work, Michael Slote argues that empathy is what Hutcheson called 'the moral sense'. The most innovative argument he offers for this claim is that our empathic reactions play a crucial role in fixing the reference of moral terms. I argue that Slote's bold proposal faces all the main problems of analytical naturalism, as well as some of its own. I suggest that empathy may nevertheless play a more modest and indirect role in acquiring moral knowledge

    Lineage Differentiation Program of Invariant Natural Killer T Cells

    Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are innate T cells restricted by CD1d molecules. They are positively selected in the thymic cortex and migrate to the medullary area, in which they differentiate into 3 different lineages. Promyelocytic leukemia zinc finger (PLZF) modulates this process, and PLZFhigh, PLZFintermediate, and PLZFlow iNKT cells are designated as NKT2, NKT17, and NKT1 cells, respectively. Analogous to conventional helper CD4 T cells, each subset expresses distinct combinations of transcription factors and produces different cytokines. In lymphoid organs, iNKT subsets have unique localizations, which determine their cytokine responses upon antigenic challenge. The lineage differentiation programs of iNKT cells are differentially regulated in various mice strains in a cell-intrinsic manner, and BALB/c mice contain a high frequency of NKT2 cells. In the thymic medulla, steady state IL-4 from NKT2 cells directly conditions CD8 T cells to become memory-like cells expressing Eomesodermin, which function as premade memory effectors. The genetic signature of iNKT cells is more similar to that of γδ T cells and innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) than of conventional helper T cells, suggesting that ILCs and innate T cells share common developmental programs.115Ysciescopuskc

    A Patterned Single Layer Graphene Resistance Temperature Sensor

    Micro-fabricated single-layer graphenes (SLGs) on a silicon dioxide (SiO2)/Si substrate, a silicon nitride (SiN) membrane, and a suspended architecture are presented for their use as temperature sensors. These graphene temperature sensors act as resistance temperature detectors, showing a quadratic dependence of resistance on the temperature in a range between 283 K and 303 K. The observed resistance change of the graphene temperature sensors are explained by the temperature dependent electron mobility relationship (~T−4) and electron-phonon scattering. By analyzing the transient response of the SLG temperature sensors on different substrates, it is found that the graphene sensor on the SiN membrane shows the highest sensitivity due to low thermal mass, while the sensor on SiO2/Si reveals the lowest one. Also, the graphene on the SiN membrane reveals not only the fastest response, but also better mechanical stability compared to the suspended graphene sensor. Therefore, the presented results show that the temperature sensors based on SLG with an extremely low thermal mass can be used in various applications requiring high sensitivity and fast operation

    Dose-Dependent Changes of Chemical Attributes in Irradiated Sausages

    To determine the effects of irradiation on the chemical attributes of sausages, TBARS values, volatile compounds, gas compounds, and hydrocarbons of vacuum-packaged sausages were analyzed during 60 d of refrigerated storage. A sulfur-containing volatile compound (dimethyl disulfide), a gas compound (methane), and radiation-induced hydrocarbons (1-tetradecene, pentadecane, heptadecane, 8-heptadecene, eicosane, 1, 7-hexadecadiene, hexadecane) were mainly detected in irradiated sausages, and the concentrations of the compounds were irradiation dosedependent. Especially methane and a few hydrocarbons were detected only in irradiated sausages and their amounts were dose-dependent. On the other hand, TBARS values, other off-odor volatiles (carbon disulfide, hexanal), and gas compounds (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide) were found both in irradiated and nonirradiated sausages. Therefore, it is suggested that irradiation-induced hydrocarbons (1-tetradecene, pentadecane, heptadecane, 8-heptadecene, eicosane, 1, 7-hexadecadiene, hexadecane), dimethyl disulfide, and methane can be used as markers for irradiated sausages

These devices with network make us enjoy ubiquitous computing life. Sometimes, on-line services request us authentication or identification for access control and authorization, and PKI technology is widely used because of its security. However the possibility of privacy invasion will increase, if We’re identified with same certificate in many services and these identification data are accumulated. For privacy-preserving authentication or anonymous authentication, there have been many researches such as Group signatures, anonymous credentials, etc. Among these researches, group signatures are very practical Because they provide unlinkability and traceability as well as anonymity. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving PKI based on group signature, with which users’ privacy can be Kept in services. Because of traceability, their identities can be traced if they abuse anonymity such as cybercrime. Moreover, we will also discuss open issues for further studies

    Locomotion Control of a Compliant Legged Robot from Slow Walking to Fast Running Regular Paper

    In this paper, we propose a locomotion control method for a compliant legged robot from slow walking to fast running. We also examine the energy efficiency of the compliant legged robot controlled by the proposed locomotion control method. Experimentally, we obtain the robot running speed of about 4.3m/s with the initial compliant leg length of 0.1m. In addition, we obtain very good energy efficiency. In the best case, the mechanical cost of transport(Cmt), known as an energy efficiency measure, is obtained at about 0.2. Comparing with the other energy efficient robots, our robot exhibits very good energy efficiency. © 2012 Kim et al.; licensee InTech.1

    Evaluation of Radiation-induced Compounds in Irradiated Raw or Cooked Chicken Meat during Storage

    The concentrations of hydrocarbons, 2-alkylcyclobutanones, and sulfur volatiles in irradiated (0, 5 kGy) chicken meats (raw, pre-cooked, and irradiatedcooked) were analyzed after 0 and 6 months of frozen storage (-40°C) under oxygen permeable packaging conditions. Two hydrocarbons [8-heptadecene (C17:1) and 6,9-heptadecadiene (C17:2)], two 2-alkylcyclobutanones [2-dodecylcyclobutanone (DCB) and 2-tetradecylcyclobutanone (TCB)], and dimethyl disulfide were determined as radiation-induced detection markers in the irradiated raw and cooked chicken meats. Although, irradiated-cooked samples produced less hydrocarbons and 2-alkylcyclobutanones than pre-cooked irradiated ones, the amount of individual hydrocarbons or 2-alkylcyclobutanones was still sufficient enough to detectradiation treatment even after 6 months of storage at -40°C. Among sulfur volatiles, only dimethyl disulfide were found in meat after 6 months of storage indicating it has potential to be used an irradiation detection marker for frozen-stored meats under oxygen permeable packaging conditions

    The objective of this study was to determine the best irradiation markers in irradiated meat. Raw and cooked beef loins, pork loins and chicken thighs were irradiated at 0 or 5 kGy. The amounts of hydrocarbons, 2-alkylcyclobutanones, and sulfur volatiles were determined after 0 and 6 months of frozen storage. Two hydrocarbons (8-heptadecene (C17:1) and 6,9-heptadecadiene (C17:2)) and two 2- alkylcyclobutanones (2-dodecylcyclobutanone (DCB) and 2-tetradecylcyclobutanone (TCB)) were detected only in irradiated raw and cooked meats. Although pre-cooked irradiated meats produced more hydrocarbons and 2- alkylcyclobutanones than the irradiated cooked ones, the amounts of individual hydrocarbons and 2- alkylcyclobutanones, such as 8-heptadecene, 6,9- heptadecadiene, DCB, and TCB, were sufficient enough to identify whether the meat was irradiated or not. Dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide were detected only in irradiated meats, but dimethyl trisulfide disappeared after 6 months of frozen storage under oxygen permeable packaging conditions. This indicated that only dimethyl disulfide could be used as an irradiation marker for the meat stored in frozen conditions for a long time
