Sustainable and participatory forestry under Mediterranean conditions: criteria and indicators for monitoring in a forest management unit of Comunidad Valenciana (Spain)

Tesis por compendioSustainable forest management (SFM) considers the social and ecological aspects of forestry apart from the productive ones. However, the relative importance of its principles changes in each type of forest. Criteria and indicators (C&I) extend the knowledge and understanding of SFM in each different situation. A set of C&I to be applied under Mediterranean conditions is proposed in this thesis. The scope was set for the forest management unit (FMU). The C&I proposed took into account the Spanish context and the Forestry Regional Plan for the region of Valencia (whose Spanish acronym is PATFOR) served as a reference. The thesis is made of three papers, two of them published and one accepted. The first identified the requirements of SFM under Mediterranean conditions and analysed the Spanish situation. For that purpose, a strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats (SWOT) analysis was carried out and strategies for improvement were determined. The results of the SWOT analysis together with the strategies and the requirements identified by means of literature review were verified in a questionnaire sent to experts. In the second paper, a group of criteria recommended to take into account for the success of a participatory process were established. A review of case studies which had developed decision support systems (DSSs) including elements of participation was completed. Conslusions were considered for the method applied in the third paper and they helped to identify indicators for the criterion “participatory processes”, which is one of the criteria proposed in this thesis. Besides, PATFOR recommends including participation in forestry decision-making. The third paper started adaptating various ecosystem services frameworks to Mediterranean conditions. PATFOR suggests that forestry is more sustainable if it stems from the provision of ecosystem services, even more in Mediterranean forests because they are not very productive in general. Management criteria which maintain and improve the provision of ecosystem services were identified. A participatory process took place in Ayora (a village in the region of Valencia); participants were asked to rank the criteria identified according their management preferences for La Hunde y La Palomera, a FMU near the village. A proposal of indicators was another output of this paper. The thesis includes another chapter which does not correspond to any published paper; it describes the elaboration of a questionnaire that was sent to experts. The questionnaire asked respondents to prioritise the indicators proposed in the third paper following the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology. The result is a proposal of 15 criteria and 90 indicators. Criteria were inspired by the requirements of the first paper and the ecosystem services. 7 out of 15 criteria are social, noticeably increasing the weight of the social pillar in comparison with other existing C&I sets. Nevertheless, participants ranked ecological implications of forestry as the most preferred ones. However, they did not reject any of the criteria and this suggests that considering ecosystem services in forest management is realistic and desirable. Although the AHP questionnaire sent to experts was different from the participatory process, both in appearance and content, some comparisons can be made. Experts search for feasibility in their answers. It may be recommended from these differences that forestry decision-making takes into account the views of affected people, but their preferences might pass an expert filter before carrying out actions. Regarding the indicators, some more work on them is still necessary, but they show a simple writing and they refer to a specific aspect of each criterion.Valls Donderis, P. (2015). The perceptive experience of the heritage landscape

[EN] Education on heritage environments based on user experience is committed to understanding and enhancing the heritage landscape. The proposal prioritizes "experimenting" over "explaining" to reduce the digital divide and to guarantee equal access to information and knowledge. The urban environment of the church of the Santos Juanes is one of the most characteristic places in the history of the city of Valencia. In the same environment there are emblematic monuments such as the Lonja de la Seda and the Mercat Central of Valencia. Despite all of the above, the landscape has suffered considerable deterioration in recent decades. The lack of a safe urban space, the weak treatment of urban connections to monuments and the physical deterioration of the building have been the factors that have caused the creation of an environment conducive to alienating behaviors with the place. The high degree of alienation has led to the production of campaigns to prevent and prosecute these behaviors by the municipal administration, however there are no proposals to help understand and know these places. Currently, the redevelopment works of this environment are being undertaken, so it is of interest to propose an educational proposal about the heritage area to stimulate interest, learning, experience and exploration. Visits and workshops on the interpretation and sensitive experience of the cultural landscape bring citizens closer to experiencing the church of the Santos Juanes in a way not based on a data compilation discourse. In conclusion, experiencing, knowing and sharing these environments strengthens the relationship between citizens and their cultural heritage. At the same time, these exercises help to collect information on how citizens perceive and value their heritage environments.Barranco Donderis, A. (2022). The current research is an aproach to Big Data and data visuali-zation from a ludologist perspective, video games and digital art. On one hand, we will describe the concept of metagame, which is going to serve as a referential frame explaining the convergence of two contemporary trends Gamification and Datification in video games. Therefor a litera-ture review and a case study will be carried out, focusing on publications and examples in the fields of ludology and computer science, in order to ilustrate this convergence. On the other hand, the practical part of the present research consists in exploring the potential of a video game as a data visualizer and as a means which promotes critical thought. Conse-quently, several prototypes will be designed, following different strategies when incorporating data, which is external to the game system core.Donderis Barrachina, L. (2018). METAGAME. Son cinco: Flexible, Add on, Add in, Adaptable y Furniture. Flexibility in architecture reflects on the time of a building and the variety of functions that people can change it during all this time. Also is the idea of a concept that solves all the problems that an architecture project can get it. Architects should take flexibility as an option to layout spaces more adaptable and conscious about the time. This research searches possible architecture techniques that carry out the flexible space. There are five strategies: Flexible, Add on, Add in, Adaptable and Furniture. In each strategy, it is investigated cases to study the application of each one in a practical situation. As a result, it is classified two types of strategies: Firstly Flexible, Add on and Adaptable are the best ones to solve a large-scale project because of the complexity of the solution like a reticular structure or a system of mobile panels to layout an interior distribution; Secondly, Add in and Furniture are complementary solutions of the others. In conclusion, it is demonstrated that Flexibility is a real tool to make any project and it is provided a guidance to apply it.Barranco Donderis, A. (2017). [EN] The following report relates the research and the development of the VVAA project. It is an artistic production classifiable as fiber art or textile art. Inspiring by the technician of the tapestry, I have worked with materials that are not traditionally linked to it, in order to create in a sculptural way a two-‐dimensional and pictorial piece of work. Starting with a line, it is created a surface that is at the same time support and work. This review also collects a study of some implicit aspects of the textile art, as being associated with women issues, and the prejudice to be historically subjugated to the painting. It will be examinated the reasons which led to these considerations and to classify it as a weak link in the thin line between art and craft.[ES] En la siguiente memoria se relata la investigación y desarrollo del proyecto VVAA. VVAA. Inefficiencies in unbalanced three-phase power systems. Relationship between system asymmetry and instantaneous power waves

[EN] This work analyzes the energy phenomena occurring in linear power systems characterized by the presence of load unbalances, using the principles of the Unifying General Theory of Electric Power [1],[2]. The energy fluxes characterize each phenomenon in the power system, especially the energy associated with the asymmetry phenomenon; thus it is possible to quantify the asymmetry phenomenon from the instantaneous power shapes, manifested by three unbalanced sinusoidal fluxes, whose resultant is a sinusoidal wave. In addition, this work presents the relationship between the quantification of the phenomenon and the amplitudes of the power fluxesSabater I Serra, R.; Donderis Quiles, V. (2004).

This paper proposes two new coincident probabilistic cyclical indicators developed by the Bank of France in order to follow, on a monthly basis, the French economic activity. The first one is an indicator which aims at detecting the turning points of the acceleration cycle while the second one is dedicated to the follow-up of recession phases in the industrial sector. Both indicators are based on the methodology of Markov-Switching models and use only for input the Bank of France monthly business survey. An historical validation since 1998 points out to the interest and the complementarity of both indicators for the short-term economic diagnosis. This kind of indicators provides with an original and additional conjonctural qualitative information by comparison with more classical quantitative tools aiming at estimating the GDP growth rate.Business cycle ; Acceleration cycle ; Probabilistic indicator ; Markov-Switching models ; Surveys.
