Stability and Hermitian-Einstein metrics for vector bundles on framed manifolds
We adapt the notions of stability of holomorphic vector bundles in the sense
of Mumford-Takemoto and Hermitian-Einstein metrics in holomorphic vector
bundles for canonically polarized framed manifolds, i.e. compact complex
manifolds X together with a smooth divisor D such that K_X \otimes [D] is
ample. It turns out that the degree of a torsion-free coherent sheaf on X with
respect to the polarization K_X \otimes [D] coincides with the degree with
respect to the complete K\"ahler-Einstein metric g_{X \setminus D} on X
\setminus D. For stable holomorphic vector bundles, we prove the existence of a
Hermitian-Einstein metric with respect to g_{X \setminus D} and also the
uniqueness in an adapted sense.Comment: 21 pages, International Journal of Mathematics (to appear
The ADHM Construction of Instantons on Noncommutative Spaces
We present an account of the ADHM construction of instantons on Euclidean
space-time from the point of view of noncommutative geometry. We
recall the main ingredients of the classical construction in a coordinate
algebra format, which we then deform using a cocycle twisting procedure to
obtain a method for constructing families of instantons on noncommutative
space-time, parameterised by solutions to an appropriate set of ADHM equations.
We illustrate the noncommutative construction in two special cases: the
Moyal-Groenewold plane and the Connes-Landi plane

TikTok, Tomatoes, and Teenagers: Using New Social Media Apps to Connect Extension Education with Younger Audiences
Social media usage has precipitated changes in Cooperative Extension’s delivery of programs to amplify involvement with selected audiences and it is important that we craft relevant content for a variety of audiences. Current research tells us that social media and related content can enrich education and can create broader audiences for programming. Resources like blogs, podcasts, and geofilters have shown to be received positively by a wide range of audiences and have created greater rates of engagement.
Yet, one platform that has received limited attention is TikTok, perhaps due to TikTok’s mixed reviews in educational systems. With current trends showing that 48% of 18-29 year olds are using the app, we believe that TikTok has great potential for connecting audiences with research-based information and engaging previously unreached communities
Emergent Calabi-Yau Geometry
We show how the smooth geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds emerges from the
thermodynamic limit of the statistical mechanical model of crystal melting
defined in our previous paper arXiv:0811.2801. In particular, the thermodynamic
partition function of molten crystals is shown to be equal to the classical
limit of the partition function of the topological string theory by relating
the Ronkin function of the characteristic polynomial of the crystal melting
model to the holomorphic 3-form on the corresponding Calabi-Yau manifold.Comment: 4 pages; v2: revised discussion on wall crossing; v3: typos

Perceptions of Job Competencies and Mentoring Program Development for Extension Administrative Assistants: A Focus Group Study of Multiple Extension Employee Groups
Extension workplace mentoring programs may produce increased Extension programming competence, organizational commitment, job satisfaction (Denny, 2016), and leadership effectiveness (Kutilek & Earnest, 2001). The study described in this article aimed to gather information for a proposed mentoring program for Extension administrative assistants. A total of 12 focus groups were conducted with 78 participants representing five employee groups: administrative assistants, Extension agents, county directors, state specialists, and department heads. Employee groups were separately interviewed. Findings indicated that respondents perceive the role of an administrative assistant as critically important, and major competencies required by the administrative assistant role are people skills/customer service, bookkeeping, technology, and a willingness to learn/adaptability to change. Respondents perceived that workplace mentoring is important, and it should be required of all newly-hired administrative assistants. Regarding incentives, administrative assistants felt that counting mentoring time as part of their University’s annual professional learning requirement of 32 hours would encourage participation. Major recommendations include the establishment of an e-mentoring program that incorporates the administrative assistants’ academic, career, and personal goals in addition to organizational policies and procedures
Nonsingular solutions of Hitchin's equations for noncompact gauge groups
We consider a general ansatz for solving the 2-dimensional Hitchin's
equations, which arise as dimensional reduction of the 4-dimensional self-dual
Yang-Mills equations, with remarkable integrability properties. We focus on the
case when the gauge group G is given by a real form of SL(2,C). For G=SO(2,1),
the resulting field equations are shown to reduce to either the Liouville,
elliptic sinh-Gordon or elliptic sine-Gordon equations. As opposed to the
compact case, given by G=SU(2), the field equations associated with the
noncompact group SO(2,1) are shown to have smooth real solutions with
nonsingular action densities, which are furthermore localized in some sense. We
conclude by discussing some particular solutions, defined on R^2, S^2 and T^2,
that come out of this ansatz.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. To appear in Nonlinearit
A cusp electron gun for millimeter wave gyrodevices
The experimental results of a thermionic cusp electron gun, to drive millimeter and submillimeter wave harmonic gyrodevices, are reported in this paper. Using a "smooth" magnetic field reversal formed by two coils this gun generated an annular-shaped, axis-encircling electron beam with 1.5 A current, and an adjustable velocity ratio alpha of up to 1.56 at a beam voltage of 40 kV. The beam cross-sectional shape and transported beam current were measured by a witness plate technique and Faraday cup, respectively. These measured results were found to be in excellent agreement with the simulated results using the three-dimensional code MAGIC
