    ‘Dominant ethnicity’ and the ‘ethnic-civic’ dichotomy in the work of A. D. Smith

    This article considers the way in which the work of Anthony Smith has helped to structure debates surrounding the role of ethnicity in present-day nations. Two major lines of enquiry are evident here. First, the contemporary role of dominant ethnic groups within 'their' nations and second, the interplay between ethnic and civic elements in nationalist argument. The two processes are related, but maintain elements of distinctiveness. Smith's major contribution to the dominant ethnicity debate has been to disembed ethnicity from the ideologically-charged and/or anglo-centric discourse of ethnic relations and to place it in historical context, thereby opening up space for dominant group ethnicity to be considered as a distinct phenomenon. This said, Smith's work does not adequately account for the vicissitudes of dominant ethnicity in the contemporary West. Building on the classical works of Hans Kohn and Friedrich Meinecke, Anthony Smith has also made a seminal contribution to the debate on civic and ethnic forms of national identity and nationalist ideology. As well as freeing this debate from the strong normative overtones which it has often carried, he has continued to insist that the terms civic and ethnic should be treated as an ideal-typical distinction rather than a scheme of classification

    An overview of psychology and law and forensic psychology in Australia

    Psychology’s roots in Australia go back to 1881, but the first documented evidence of psychology-and-law (psycholegal) research and psychologists working in court and correctional settings only emerged in 1949. The activities of psycholegal researchers and psychologists providing services to the correction, investigative and justice systems are not well-documented. Our aim in this paper is to start recording the histories of these people and the development of the psycholegal and forensic psychology fields. We do this primarily by examining publications and conference papers and recording our and other people’s personal recollections. We specifically record psychologists’ interaction with lawyers, their concerns about professional and ethical issues and the teaching of forensic psychology. We finally give a brief overview of the current state of the two fields

    Carbon Nanotube-based Sensor and Method for Continually Sensing Changes in a Structure

    A sensor has a plurality of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based conductors operatively positioned on a substrate. The conductors are arranged side-by-side, such as in a substantially parallel relationship to one another. At least one pair of spaced-apart electrodes is coupled to opposing ends of the conductors. A portion of each of the conductors spanning between each pair of electrodes comprises a plurality of carbon nanotubes arranged end-to-end and substantially aligned along an axis. Because a direct correlation exists between resistance of a carbon nanotube and carbon nanotube strain, changes experienced by the portion of the structure to which the sensor is coupled induce a change in electrical properties of the conductors

    Interviews with 22 members of public and private company boards revealed their beliefs about and expectations for CHROs in the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) succession process. Board members distinguished between credible CHROs who can add significant value to the process and those CHROs who they do not want to see included in almost any aspect of the process. When credible, board members want CHROs to have confidential conversations with the current CEO, to create processes and development plans for potential successors, and to provide their own independent insights regarding candidate strengths and weaknesses. Directors noted that CHROs who add value must display expertise, honesty, transparency, courage, and the ability to build trusting relationships

    Learning from Power Signals: An Automated Approach to Electrical Disturbance Identification Within a Power Transmission System

    As power quality becomes a higher priority in the electric utility industry, the amount of disturbance event data continues to grow. Utilities do not have the required personnel to analyze each event by hand. This work presents an automated approach for analyzing power quality events recorded by digital fault recorders and power quality monitors operating within a power transmission system. The automated approach leverages rule-based analytics to examine the time and frequency domain characteristics of the voltage and current signals. Customizable thresholds are set to categorize each disturbance event. The events analyzed within this work include various faults, motor starting, and incipient instrument transformer failure. Analytics for fourteen different event types have been developed. The analytics were tested on 160 signal files and yielded an accuracy of ninety-nine percent. Continuous, nominal signal data analysis is performed using an approach coined as the cyclic histogram. The cyclic histogram process will be integrated into the digital fault recorders themselves to facilitate the detection of subtle signal variations that are too small to trigger a disturbance event and that can occur over hours or days. In addition to reducing memory requirements by a factor of 320, it is anticipated that cyclic histogram processing will aid in identifying incipient events and identifiers. This project is expected to save engineers time by automating the classification of disturbance events and increase the reliability of the transmission system by providing near real time detection and identification of disturbances as well as prevention of problems before they occur.Comment: 18 page

    Distinct SARS-CoV-2 specific NLRP3 and IL-1ÎČ responses in T cells of aging patients during acute COVID-19 infection

    Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) that presents with varied clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic or mild infections and pneumonia to severe cases associated with cytokine storm, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and even death. The underlying mechanisms contributing to these differences are unclear, although exacerbated inflammatory sequelae resulting from infection have been implicated. While advanced aging is a known risk factor, the precise immune parameters that determine the outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection in elderly individuals are not understood. Here, we found aging-associated (age ≄61) intrinsic changes in T cell responses when compared to those from individuals aged ≀ 60, even among COVID-positive patients with mild symptoms. Specifically, when stimulated with SARS-CoV-2 peptides in vitro, peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) CD4+ and CD8+ T cells from individuals aged ≄61 showed a diminished capacity to produce IFN-Îł and IL-1ÎČ. Although they did not have severe disease, aged individuals also showed a higher frequency of PD-1+ cells and significantly diminished IFN-Îł/PD-1 ratios among T lymphocytes upon SARS-CoV-2 peptide stimulation. Impaired T cell IL-1ÎČ expression coincided with reduced NLRP3 levels in T lymphocytes. However, the expression of these molecules was not affected in the monocytes of individuals aged ≄61. Together, these data reveal SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell intrinsic cytokine alterations in the individuals older than 61 and may provide new insights into dysregulated COVID-directed immune responses in the elderly

    Ants as ecological indicators of rainforest restoration: community convergence and the development of an Ant Forest Indicator Index in the Australian wet tropics

    Ecosystem restoration can help reverse biodiversity loss, but whether faunal communities of forests undergoing restoration converge with those of primary forest over time remains contentious. There is a need to develop faunal indicators of restoration success that more comprehensively reflect changes in biodiversity and ecosystem function. Ants are an ecologically dominant faunal group and are widely advocated as ecological indicators. We examine ant species and functional group responses on a chronosequence of rainforest restoration in northern Australia, and develop a novel method for selecting and using indicator species. Four sampling techniques were used to survey ants at 48 sites, from grassland, through various ages (1–24 years) of restoration plantings, to mature forest. From principal components analysis of seven vegetation metrics, we derived a Forest Development Index (FDI) of vegetation change along the chronosequence. A novel Ant Forest Indicator Index (AFII), based on the occurrences of ten key indicator species associated with either grassland or mature forest, was used to assess ant community change with forest restoration. Grasslands and mature forests supported compositionally distinct ant communities at both species and functional levels. The AFII was strongly correlated with forest development (FDI). At forest restoration sites older than 5–10 years that had a relatively closed canopy, ant communities converged on those of mature rainforest, indicating a promising restoration trajectory for fauna as well as plants. Our findings reinforce the utility of ants as ecological indicators and emphasize the importance of restoration methods that achieve rapid closed‐canopy conditions. The novel AFII assessed restoration status from diverse and patchily distributed species, closely tracking ant community succession using comprehensive species‐level data. It has wide applicability for assessing forest restoration in a way that is relatively independent of sampling methodology and intensity, and without a need for new comparative data from reference sites

    Synthesis and Characterization of Pyridine-Armed Reinforced Macrocycles and Their Transition Metal Complexes as Potential Oxidation Catalysts

    Oxidation catalysts stable in aqueous solution under both harsh pH\u27s and at high temperature would be environmentally friendly alternatives to current technologies. Transition metal complexes of tetraazamacrocycles reinforced with additional ethylene bridges have produced such oxidation catalysts. A controlling aspect of the usefulness of any metal catalyst is its set of oxidation and reduction potentials. Reversible redox processes that bracket a potential window within which useful oxidation of substrate molecules can occur are desirable. Though quite robust, and exhibiting reversible electrochemistry, some reinforced macrocycle complexes are not useful catalysts because their redox potentials are not in a desired potential range. An established method of modifying the electrochemical properties of a transition metal complex is to modify the ligand, which subsequently modifies the properties of its complexed metal ion. We wished to determine if the addition of pyridine pendant arms to the known reinforced macrocycle ligands would result in beneficial shifts in the redox potentials of their transition metal complexes. The resulting ligands must allow at least one open coordination site on the bound metal ion for oxidant and/or substrate binding. We have synthesized and characterized both cross-bridged and side-bridged cyclen and cyclam tetraazamacrocycles with pyridine pendant arms. Cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc complexes were made. The synthesis and characterization of the ligands and the synthesis and characterization of their complexes will be presented
