    Counterflow of spontaneous mass currents in trapped spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases

    We use the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism and study the ground-state phases of trapped spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in two dimensions. Our main finding is that the presence of a symmetric (Rashba type) spin-orbit coupling spontaneously induces counterflowing mass currents in the vicinity of the trap edge, i.e. \uparrow and \downarrow particles circulate in opposite directions with equal speed. These currents flow even in noninteracting systems, but their strength decreases toward the molecular BEC limit, which can be achieved either by increasing the spin-orbit coupling or the interaction strength. These currents are also quite robust against the effects of asymmetric spin-orbit couplings in xx and yy directions, gradually reducing to zero as the spin-orbit coupling becomes one dimensional.     On library correctness under weak memory consistency: specifying and verifying concurrent libraries under declarative consistency models

    Concurrent libraries are the building blocks for concurrency. They encompass a range of abstractions (locks, exchangers, stacks, queues, sets) built in a layered fashion: more advanced libraries are built out of simpler ones. While there has been a lot of work on verifying such libraries in a sequentially consistent (SC) environment, little is known about how to specify and verify them under weak memory consistency (WMC). We propose a general declarative framework that allows us to specify concurrent libraries declaratively, and to verify library implementations against their specifications compositionally. Our framework is sufficient to encode standard models such as SC, (R)C11 and TSO. Additionally, we specify several concurrent libraries, including mutual exclusion locks, reader-writer locks, exchangers, queues, stacks and sets. We then use our framework to verify multiple weakly consistent implementations of locks, exchangers, queues and stacks

    Automating Deductive Verification for Weak-Memory Programs

    Writing correct programs for weak memory models such as the C11 memory model is challenging because of the weak consistency guarantees these models provide. The first program logics for the verification of such programs have recently been proposed, but their usage has been limited thus far to manual proofs. Automating proofs in these logics via first-order solvers is non-trivial, due to reasoning features such as higher-order assertions, modalities and rich permission resources. In this paper, we provide the first implementation of a weak memory program logic using existing deductive verification tools. We tackle three recent program logics: Relaxed Separation Logic and two forms of Fenced Separation Logic, and show how these can be encoded using the Viper verification infrastructure. In doing so, we illustrate several novel encoding techniques which could be employed for other logics. Our work is implemented, and has been evaluated on examples from existing papers as well as the Facebook open-source Folly library.Comment: Extended version of TACAS 2018 publicatio

    19F NMR spectroscopy monitors ligand binding to recombinantly fluorine-labelled b'x from human protein disulphide isomerase (hPDI)

    We report a protein-observe (19)F NMR-based ligand titration binding study of human PDI b'x with ?-somatostatin that also emphasises the need to optimise recombinant protein fluorination when using 5- or 6-fluoroindole. This study highlights a recombinant preference for 5-fluoroindole over 6-fluoroindole; most likely due to the influence of fluorine atomic packing within the folded protein structure. Fluorination affords a single (19)F resonance probe to follow displacement of the protein x-linker as ligand is titrated and provides a dissociation constant of 23 ± 4 ?M

    Safety of Simultaneous Resections of Colorectal Cancer and Liver Metastases

    Liver resection is the only potentially curative method for patients with colorectal cancer metastases and 5-year survival rates are 20% – 40%. Simultaneous resection of colorectal cancer and synchronous liver metastases has been recommended if minor hepatectomy is indicated. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the treatment of hepatic colorectal secondaries and to assess the safety of simultaneous and delayed liver resections and relations of morbidity to the extensiveness of hepatectomy and perioperative factors. Analyzed were 21 patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer operated between 1997 and 1999 in the Clinical Hospital »Sestre milosrdnice«. Operating time for simultaneous colorectal and liver resections was not significantly longer compared to liver resections alone. No significant difference in complication rate was found after simultaneous procedures and liver resection alone (38% vs. 31%). Complication rate after major liver resections was not significantly greater than after minor resections (38% vs. 31%). No statistically significant differences were found in operation time and blood replacement between patients who developed postoperative complications and those who did not. In conclusion, simultaneous resections of primary colorectal cancer and liver metastases may be considered safe. Morbidity rates are not significantly different from those after liver resections alone, nor depend significantly upon the extensiveness of liver resection, providing that the operation time and blood loss are within the range observed in this study

    Jejunal perforation in gallstone ileus – a case series

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Gallstone ileus is an uncommon complication of cholelithiasis but an established cause of mechanical bowel obstruction in the elderly. Perforation of the small intestine proximal to the obstructing gallstone is rare, and only a handful of cases have been reported. We present two cases of perforation of the jejunum in gallstone ileus, and remarkably in one case, the gallstone ileus caused perforation of a jejunal diverticulum and is to the best of our knowledge the first such case to be described.</p> <p>Case presentations</p> <p><b>Case 1</b></p> <p>A 69 year old man presented with two days of vomiting and central abdominal pain. He underwent laparotomy for small bowel obstruction and was found to have a gallstone obstructing the mid-ileum. There was a 2 mm perforation in the anti-mesenteric border of the dilated proximal jejunum. The gallstone was removed and the perforated segment of jejunum was resected.</p> <p><b>Case 2</b></p> <p>A 68 year old man presented with a four day history of vomiting and central abdominal pain. Chest and abdominal radiography were unremarkable however a subsequent CT scan of the abdomen showed aerobilia. At laparotomy his distal ileum was found to be obstructed by an impacted gallstone and there was a perforated diverticulum on the mesenteric surface of the mid-jejunum. An enterolithotomy and resection of the perforated small bowel was performed.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Gallstone ileus remains a diagnostic challenge despite advances in imaging techniques, and pre-operative diagnosis is often delayed. Partly due to the elderly population it affects, gallstone ileus continues to have both high morbidity and mortality rates. On reviewing the literature, the most appropriate surgical intervention remains unclear.</p> <p>Jejunal perforation in gallstone ileus is extremely rare. The cases described illustrate two quite different causes of perforation complicating gallstone ileus. In the first case, perforation was probably due to pressure necrosis caused by the gallstone. The second case was complicated by the presence of a perforated jejunal diverticulum, which was likely to have been secondary to the increased intra-luminal pressure proximal to the obstructing gallstone.</p> <p>These cases should raise awareness of the complications associated with both gallstone ileus, and small bowel diverticula.</p

    Procjena utjecaja modernizacije i novih tehnoloških procesa na izloženost buci u aluminijskoj industriji

    The aim of this study was to assess to which extent modernisation of an aluminium production complex reduced occupational noise hazard for jobs with the highest potential of exposure. Periodical measurements of noise level were taken at the same workplaces using the same method, before and after modernisation of all plants. The results were compared with the recommended standard. After modernisation, the noise was significantly reduced in all sections of all plants. The greatest reduction was measured in the foundry. After modernisation, the portion of workplaces with excessive noise level dropped significantly (chi-square=21.315; p<0.0001) from 78.4 % to 13 %. Noise remained a problem in ingot casting and dross skimming section. In the anode plant, noise remained a problem in the green mill section where noise intensities generated by mills and vibrocompactors varied from 95 dB(A) to 102 dB(A). In the electrolysis plant, the portion of workplaces with extensive noise dropped from 77.8 % to 39.3 % after modernisation (p=0.0019). Noise remains to be a problem at the anode covering section where levels rise up to 100 dB(A). The modernisation of the factory has considerably reduced the noise level in the working environment of all plants, but it can not be reduced completely.Cilj je rada procijeniti utjecaj modernizacije tehnološkog procesa proizvodnje aluminija na prisutnost i razinu buke štetne za zdravlje radnika u radnom okolišu. U tu svrhu uspoređivani su rezultati periodičkih mjerenja razine buke prije i nakon modernizacije. Mjerenja intenziteta buke provedena su na istim radnim mjestima i istom metodom tijekom radnih smjena i uspoređeni s važećim nacionalnim standardom. Nakon modernizacije tvornice u svim odjelima proizvodnih pogona značajno se smanjila razina buke, kao i broj radnih mjesta na kojima su radnici izloženi prekomjernoj buci. Najbolji rezultati postignuti su u ljevaonici, gdje se broj radnih mjesta s prekomjernom razinom buke, tj. razinom buke višom od 90 dB(A) smanjio sa 78.4 % na 13 %. Na radnim mjestima gdje se izlijevaju ingoti i skida šljaka buka je i dalje prekomjerna. U pogonu anoda prekomjerna je buka i dalje prisutna pri proizvodnji sirovih anoda, gdje razina buke zbog rada mlinova i vibrokompresora varira od 95 dB(A) do 102 dB(A). U pogonu elektrolize buka viša od 100 dB(A) izmjerena je pri zasipanju anoda. Iako je modernizacijom tvornice i unaprjeđenjem tehnološkog procesa značajno reducirana razina buke, nije ju moguće u cijelosti ukloniti
