    Novel web-based real-time dashboard to optimize recycling and use of red cell units at a large multi-site transfusion service

    Background: Effective blood inventory management reduces outdates of blood products. Multiple strategies have been employed to reduce the rate of red blood cell (RBC) unit outdate. We designed an automated real-time web-based dashboard interfaced with our laboratory information system to effectively recycle red cell units. The objective of our approach is to decrease RBC outdate rates within our transfusion service. Methods: The dashboard was deployed in August 2011 and is accessed by a shortcut that was placed on the desktops of all blood transfusion services computers in the Capital District Health Authority region. It was designed to refresh automatically every 10 min. The dashboard provides all vital information on RBC units, and implemented a color coding scheme to indicate an RBC unit′s proximity to expiration. Results: The overall RBC unit outdate rate in the 7 months period following implementation of the dashboard (September 2011-March 2012) was 1.24% (123 units outdated/9763 units received), compared to similar periods in 2010-2011 and 2009-2010: 2.03% (188/9395) and 2.81% (261/9220), respectively. The odds ratio of a RBC unit outdate postdashboard (2011-2012) compared with 2010-2011 was 0.625 (95% confidence interval: 0.497-0.786; P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Our dashboard system is an inexpensive and novel blood inventory management system which was associated with a significant reduction in RBC unit outdate rates at our institution over a period of 7 months. This system, or components of it, could be a useful addition to existing RBC management systems at other institutions

    Preliminary Assessment of Organic Geochemistry in Sediments from the Transkei Basin (IODP Site U1581)

    A series of organic-rich sedimentary sequences that span the Paleocene through the Campanian was recovered from the Transkei Basin during IODP Expedition 392. Preliminary analyses of their organic geochemistry reveals suites of biomarkers that reflect diverse contributions of organic matter from both marine and terrestrial sources. The characteristics of the organic matter (OM) for a range of samples have been determined by shipboard and shore-based analyses that include evaluation of OM type and maturity by Rock-Eval pyrolysis, isotopic compositions of OM, and the distributions of aliphatic and aromatic biomarkers. Samples from both the Paleocene and Campanian contain series of C37 to C40 diunsaturated alkenones, including the earliest record of C38 alkadien-2-ones and C39 alkadien-3-ones [1]. Samples from a section of the Campanian (~72.5 Ma) reveal an abundance of C28 steradienes and steryl ethers potentially indicative of upwelling conditions [2]. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons within the sequence include compounds that reflect inputs of OM derived from angiosperms and paleofires [3,4]. Dominant hopanoids in the samples include -homohopane, hop-17(21)-ene, and 29-norhop-17(21)-ene, accompanied by fernenes [5], a C35 hopanoid thiophene [6] and also dammarenes [7] in Paleocene samples. These initial results provide evidence that biomarker profiling will facilitate determination of the sources of OM from the Late Cretaceous to the Paleocene in the Transkei Basin and paleoenvironmental conditions of deposition

    High pathogenicity avian influenza (H5N1) in northern gannets: global spread, clinical signs, and demographic consequences

    During 2021 and 2022 High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) killed thousands of wild birds across Europe and North America, suggesting a change in infection dynamics and a shift to new hosts, including seabirds. Northern Gannets (Morus bassanus) appeared especially severely impacted, but a detailed account of the data available is required to help understand how the virus spread across the metapopulation, and the ensuing demographic consequences. Accordingly, we analyse information on confirmed and suspected HPAIV outbreaks across most North Atlantic Gannet colonies and for the largest colony (Bass Rock, UK), provide impacts on population size, breeding success, and preliminary results on apparent adult survival and serology. Unusually high numbers of dead Gannets were first noted at colonies in Iceland during April 2022. Outbreaks in May occurred in many Scottish colonies, followed by colonies in Canada, Germany and Norway. By the end of June, outbreaks had occurred in colonies in Canada and the English Channel. Outbreaks in 12 UK and Ireland colonies appeared to follow a clockwise pattern with the last infected colonies recorded in late August/September. Unusually high mortality was recorded at 40 colonies (75% of global total colonies). Dead birds testing positive for HPAIV H5N1 were associated with 58% of these colonies. At Bass Rock, the number of occupied nest sites decreased by at least 71%, breeding success declined by ~66% compared to the long-term UK mean and the resighting of marked individuals suggested that apparent adult survival between 2021 and 2022 could have been substantially lower than the preceding 10-year average. Serological investigation detected antibodies specific to H5 in apparently healthy birds indicating that some Gannets recover from HPAIV infection. Further, most of these recovered birds had black irises, suggestive of a phenotypic indicator of previous infection. Untangling the impacts of HPAIV infection from other challenges faced by seabirds is key to establishing effective conservation strategies for threatened seabird populations as the likelihood of further epizootics increases, due to increasing habitat loss and the industrialization of poultry production
