Acute Toxicity of Opuntia Ficus Indica and Pistacia Lentiscus Seed Oils in Mice
Opuntia ficus indica and Pistacia lentiscus L. seeds are used in traditional medicine. The objective of this study was to investigate the toxicity of the fixed oil of Opuntia ficus indica and Pistacia lentiscus L. seeds in mice through determination of LD50 values, and also the physicochemical characteristics of the fixed oil of these oils. The acute toxicity of their fixed oil were also investigated in mice using the method of Kabba and Berhens. The fixed oil of Pistacia lentiscus and Opuntia ficus indica seeds were extracted and analyzed for its chemical and physical properties such as acid value, free fatty acid percentage (% FFA), iodine index, and saponification value as well as refractive index and density. LD50 values obtained by single doses, orally and intraperitoneally administered in mice, were respectively 43 ± 0,8 ;[40.7- 45.4 ] ml/kg body wt. p.o. and 2.72 ± 0,1 ;[2.52–2.92] ml/kg body wt. i.p. for Opuntia ficus indica; and 37 ± 1 ;[34.4 – 39.8 ] ml/kg body wt. p.o. and 2.52 ± 0,2 ;[2.22 – 2.81 ] ml/kg body wt. i.p. for Pistacia lentiscus respectively. The yields of seed oil were respectively calculated as 20.25% and 10.41%. The acid and free fatty acid values indicated that the oil has a low acidity
Irritantcy potential and sub acute dermal toxicity study of Pistacia Lentiscus fatty oil as a topical traditional remedy
The current study was undertaken to assess safety of Pistacia lentiscus fruits fatty oil (PLFO) as a topical traditional remedy. A primary skin and eye irritation tests were conducted with New Zealand white rabbits to determine the potential for PLFO to produce irritation from a single application. In addition, a sub acute dermal toxicity study was performed on 18 NZW rabbits to evaluate possible adverse effect following application of PLFO for 28 days. Based on the results of the current study, PLFO is classified as slightly irritating to the skin and the eye of rabbits (Primary Irritation Index (P.I.I.) = 1.037; Ocular Irritation Index (O.I.I.) = 5.33 at 1 h). In the sub-acute toxicity test, PLFO produced neither mortality nor significant differences in the body and organ weights between control group and treated rabbits. However, a reversible irritant contact dermatitis was observed in the treated areas from the end of the second week of application until the end of experiment. This local phenomenon was accompanied by a significant skin thickening (P.0.01) since the 12th day (ANOVA, F = 11, 07143, P = 0, 00765) which is confirmed with an inflammatory granuloma in histological study. Haematological analysis and blood chemistry values of the 2 groups showed no significant differences in any of the parameters examined. In summary, PLFO is minimally irritating to the eye and skin after a single exposure, but it may cause irritant contact dermatitis and a reversible thickening of skin after prolonged use.Key words: Pistacia lentiscus, fatty oil, skin, eye, dermatitis, irritation, toxicity

ANTILEISHMANIAL ACTIVITY OF SOME PLANTS GROWING IN ALGERIA: JUGLANS REGIA, LAWSONIA INERMIS AND SALVIA OFFICINALIS.
The current study was undertaken to evaluate in vitro the antileishmanial activity of three plants growing wild in Algeria : Juglans regia, Lawsonia inermis and Salvia officinalis. The hydroalcoholic extracts of these plants were tested on the growth of the promastigotes of Leishmania major. The plant extract effects were compared with three controls : CRL1 composed of 1 ml RPMI inoculated with 106 of promastigotes, CRL2 composed of 1 ml RPMI inoculated with 106 of promastigotes and 100 μl of hydroalcoholic solvent, CRL3 composed of 1 ml RPMI inoculated with 106 of promastigotes and 100 μl of Glucantim as a reference drug in the management of leishmaniasis. Beneficial effects of sodium selenite on some serum biochemical parameters in alloxan-induced diabetic rats
The present study aimed to determine the possible protective effects of intraperitoneally administered sodium selenite for preventing diabetes in rats. Twenty-eight male albino rats were randomly divided into four equal groups of seven each: untreated control (G1), sodium selenite treated control (G2), untreated diabetic (G3), and sodium selenite-treated diabetic group (G4). Diabetes was induced by alloxan (150 mg/kg body weight) in groups G3 and G4 and rats were then treated with sodium selenite (5 μmol/kg body weight/day) for 4 weeks (G4). On day 28 after an overnight fasting, rats were killed and concentrations of serum glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, total lipid, urea, creatinine, uric acid, albumin and some enzymes activities: pancreatic lipase, glutamic oxalic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), Alkaline phosphatase(ALP) were also estimated. The administration of alloxan significantly increased serum glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, total lipid, urea, uric acid levels, pancreatic lipase, GOT, GPT and ALP activities, body weight gain and albumin level were significantly decreased. This alteration was restored back to near normal in diabetic rats intraperitoneal treated with sodium selenite in comparison to non treated diabetic animals. Serum creatinine concentration was normal in all groups. The study concludes that alloxan diabetes mellitus induced severe biochemical alliterations in the glucose, lipid profile concentrations, liver and kidney function markers and sodium selenite has shown protective effects preventing at least partially diabetic complications.</jats:p
Histopathological and immunohistochemical investigation of mammary tumors in female cats in Northeast Algeria
Cancer is a leading cause of feline mortality globally. This study focuses on delineating mammary gland tumor prevalence and anatomopathological characteristics in cats from northeastern Algeria. Encompassing the period from January 2021 to March 2022, the research included 50 cats from Constantine and Annaba provinces, revealing an overall 20% feline mammary tumors (FMT) prevalence. Siamese cats exhibited a higher rate compared to crossbred cats, with a mean age of positively diagnosed cats at 9±0.3 years. Histopathological classification identified 20% of tumors as malignant, specifically squamous cell carcinoma, cribriform carcinoma, and comedocarcinoma. In conclusion, further epidemiological investigations are essential to understand the risk factors in the initiation and progression of these health issues. In contrast to canine species, FMTs are less diverse, predominantly simple malignant tumors. Benign FMTs are infrequent, and the existence of complex and mixed tumors in felines remains unclear. This study selected three FMT types for immunohistochemical analyses, revealing unusual histological characteristics. A set of three malignant tumors exhibited an epithelial/myoepithelial population, with consistent myoepithelial immunohistochemical signatures. All Grade I malignant tumors resulted in subjects surviving one-year post-diagnosis. Morphologically, we propose categorizing them as feline ductal/canalicular adenoma/carcinoma and feline intracanalicular papillary adenoma/carcinoma, respectively. These findings contribute novel insights to FMT classification and are valuable for prognostic studies
Prevalence of mastitis in dairy goat farms in Eastern Algeria
Aim: This study aimed to investigate mastitis in dairy goat farms through the California mastitis test (CMT) and bacteriological examinations.
Materials and Methods: A total of 845 goats belonging to 18 farms from four regions (Tébessa, Guelma, Souk Ahras, and Skikda) were examined.
Results: Clinical examination of the mammary glands showed that 30/845 (3.55%) goats had clinical mastitis and 32 goats had half-teat inflammation. CMT subclinical mastitis (SCM) was detected in 815 goats that were presumed to be healthy. CMT showed 46 (5.64%) CMT-positive goats as well as 47 (2.88%) positive half-udders with a score of ≥2. A total of 79 bacteria were isolated and identified from the 79 bacterial positive samples. Bacteriological analyses showed that Gram-positive staphylococci were largely responsible for clinical and SCM. Coagulase-negative staphylococci, with an isolation frequency of 56.96%, were the most prevalent bacteria from all isolated organisms. The second most prevalent organism was Staphylococcus aureus at 40.50% and streptococci (2.53%) had the smallest percentage of isolation.
Conclusion: It is suggested that due to the prevalence of mastitis in this species, farmers should be aware of the problem to plan preventive and control measures to reduce dairy goat losses due to this disease
