    Human Security Workers Deployed in Austere Environments: a Brief Guide to Self-Care, Sustainment, and Productivity

    Since the early 1990s, the human security movement has sought to expand the concept of security beyond the traditional military defense of national borders to focus on the intra-state security needs of populations at the individual level. Specific initiatives frequently address problems of population health, ethnic conflict, religious extremism, human rights, environmental or natural disasters, and other critical issues. For expatriate human security workers in the field, the environment may present meaningful challenges to their wellbeing and productivity. This can be especially so for those who have relatively more experience in academic, business, or administrative settings, and less in the field. The authors' goal is to illuminate practices that have demonstrated their efficacy in enhancing wellness, sustainment, and productivity for human security and other humanitarian and development workers deployed to austere environments. The content represents a synoptic consensus of best general practices and guidance from a range of resources comprising United Nations agencies and activities, national and international non-governmental organizations (NGO's), private volunteer organ­izations (PVO's), national military services, and international business concerns

    A search for new particles in proton‐nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/c

    We report preliminary results from a search for new particles produced in proton‐nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/c. A double‐arm spectrometer is used to detect two‐body final states where each spectrometer arm has the capability of uniquely identifying Π±, K±, p, ?, Ό±, and ϕ.     An updated analysis of NN elastic scattering data to 1.6 GeV

    An energy-dependent and set of single-energy partial-wave analyses of NNNN elastic scattering data have been completed. The fit to 1.6~GeV has been supplemented with a low-energy analysis to 400 MeV. Using the low-energy fit, we study the sensitivity of our analysis to the choice of πNN\pi NN coupling constant. We also comment on the possibility of fitting npnp data alone. These results are compared with those found in the recent Nijmegen analyses.     Spin observables of the reactions NN -> DeltaN and pd -> Delta (pp)(1S0) in collinear kinematics

    A general formalism for double and triple spin-correlations of the reaction NN -> DeltaN is developed for the case of collinear kinematics. A complete polarization experiment allowing to reconstruct all of the four amplitudes describing this process is suggested. Furthermore, the spin observables of the inelastic charge-exchange reaction pd -> Delta^0(pp)(1S0) are analyzed in collinear kinematics within the single pN scattering mechanism involving the subprocess pn -> Delta^0p. The full set of spin observables related to the polarization of one or two initial particles and one final particle is obtained in terms of three invariant amplitudes of the reaction pd -> Delta (pp)(1S0) and the transition form factor d->(pp)(1S0). A complete polarization experiment for the reaction pd -> Delta^0(pp)(1S0) is suggested which allows one to determine three independent combinations of the four amplitudes of the elementary subprocess NN -> DeltaN.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur

    Single-Molecule Imaging of an in Vitro-Evolved RNA Aptamer Reveals Homogeneous Ligand Binding Kinetics

    Many studies of RNA folding and catalysis have revealed conformational heterogeneity, metastable folding intermediates, and long-lived states with distinct catalytic activities. We have developed a single-molecule imaging approach for investigating the functional heterogeneity of in vitro-evolved RNA aptamers. Monitoring the association of fluorescently labeled ligands with individual RNA aptamer molecules has allowed us to record binding events over the course of multiple days, thus providing sufficient statistics to quantitatively define the kinetic properties at the single-molecule level. The ligand binding kinetics of the highly optimized RNA aptamer studied here displays a remarkable degree of uniformity and lack of memory. Such homogeneous behavior is quite different from the heterogeneity seen in previous single-molecule studies of naturally derived RNA and protein enzymes. The single-molecule methods we describe may be of use in analyzing the distribution of functional molecules in heterogeneous evolving populations or even in unselected samples of random sequences

    New limits on D0 (1.865) production in proton-nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/c

    We present final results of a sensitive search for new particles in [pi]+/-K[mnplus] effective mass spectra observed in proton-nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/c. We establish a limit for D0 (1.865) production B[pi]+[pi]- d[sigma]/dy ycm[approximate] -0.4.     A model-based exploration of farm-household livelihood and nutrition indicators to guide nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions

    Assessing progress towards healthier people, farms and landscapes through nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) requires transdisciplinary methods with robust models and metrics. Farm-household models could facilitate disentangling the complex agriculture-nutrition nexus, by jointly assessing performance indicators on different farm system components such as farm productivity, farm environmental performance, household nutrition, and livelihoods. We, therefore, applied a farm-household model, FarmDESIGN, expanded to more comprehensively capture household nutrition and production diversity, diet diversity, and nutrient adequacy metrics. We estimated the potential contribution of an NSA intervention targeting the diversification of home gardens, aimed at reducing nutritional gaps and improving livelihoods in rural Vietnam. We addressed three central questions: (1) Do ‘Selected Crops’ (i.e. crops identified in a participatory process) in the intervention contribute to satisfying household dietary requirements?; (2) Does the adoption of Selected Crops contribute to improving household livelihoods (i.e. does it increase leisure time for non-earning activities as well as the dispensable budget)?; and (3) Do the proposed nutrition-related metrics estimate the contribution of home-garden diversification towards satisfying household dietary requirements? Results indicate trade-offs between nutrition and dispensable budget, with limited farm-household configurations leading to jointly improved nutrition and livelihoods. FarmDESIGN facilitated testing the robustness and limitations of commonly used metrics to monitor progress towards NSA. Results indicate that most of the production diversity metrics performed poorly at predicting desirable nutritional outcomes in this modelling study. This study demonstrates that farm-household models can facilitate anticipating the effect (positive or negative) of agricultural interventions on nutrition and the environment, identifying complementary interventions for significant and positive results and helping to foresee the trade-offs that farm-households could face. Furthermore, FarmDESIGN could contribute to identifying agreed-upon and robust metrics for measuring nutritional outcomes at the farm-household level, to allow comparability between contexts and NSA interventions
