The Case Against Cosmology
It is argued that some of the recent claims for cosmology are grossly
overblown. Cosmology rests on a very small database: it suffers from many
fundamental difficulties as a science (if it is a science at all) whilst
observations of distant phenomena are difficult to make and harder to
interpret. It is suggested that cosmological inferences should be tentatively

Dust Attenuation in Late-Type Galaxies. I. Effects on Bulge and Disk Components
We present results of new Monte Carlo calculations made with the DIRTY code
of radiative transfer of stellar and scattered radiation for a dusty giant
late-type galaxy like the Milky Way, which illustrate the effect of the
attenuation of stellar light by internal dust on the integrated photometry of
the individual bulge and disk components. Here we focus on the behavior of the
attenuation function, the color excess, and the fraction of light scattered or
directly transmitted towards the outside observer as a function of the total
amount of dust and the inclination of the galaxy, and the structure of the
dusty interstellar medium (ISM) of the disk. We confirm that dust attenuation
produces qualitatively and quantitatively different effects on the integrated
photometry of bulge and disk, whatever the wavelength. In addition, we find
that the structure of the dusty ISM affects more sensitively the observed
magnitudes than the observed colors of both bulge and disk. Finally, we show
that the contribution of the scattered radiation to the total monochromatic
light received by the outside observer is significant, particularly at UV
wavelengths, even for a two-phase, clumpy, dusty ISM. Thus understanding dust
scattering properties is fundamental for the interpretation of extragalactic

A Simple Model for the Absorption of Starlight by Dust in Galaxies
We present a new model to compute the effects of dust on the integrated
spectral properties of galaxies, based on an idealized prescription of the main
features of the interstellar medium (ISM). The model includes the ionization of
HII regions in the interiors of the dense clouds in which stars form and the
influence of the finite lifetime of these clouds on the absorption of
radiation. We compute the production of emission lines and the absorption of
continuum radiation in the HII regions and the subsequent transfer of line and
continuum radiation in the surrounding HI regions and the ambient ISM. This
enables us to interpret simultaneously all the observations of a homogeneous
sample of nearby UV-selected starburst galaxies, including the ratio of far-IR
to UV luminosities, the ratio of Halpha to Hbeta luminosities, the Halpha
equivalent width, and the UV spectral slope. We show that the finite lifetime
of stellar birth clouds is a key ingredient to resolve an apparent discrepancy
between the attenuation of line and continuum photons in starburst galaxies. In
addition, we find that an effective absorption curve proportional to
lambda^-0.7 reproduces the observed relation between the ratio of far-IR to UV
luminosities and the UV spectral slope. We interpret this relation most simply
as a sequence in the overall dust content of the galaxies. The shallow
wavelength dependence of the effective absorption curve is compatible with the
steepness of known extinction curves if the dust has a patchy distribution. In
particular, we find that a random distribution of discrete clouds with optical
depths similar to those in the Milky Way provides a consistent interpretation
of all the observations. Our model for absorption can be incorporated easily

The outcome of the research confirms the occurrence of positive interaction between professionally active people's incomes and the self-assessed state of health. People declaring a bad state of health have incomes by 20% on average lower than people who enjoy good health (assuming that the remaining characteristics of the surveyed person are the same). Gaps in the cloud cover? Comparing extinction measures in spiral disks
Dust in galaxies can be mapped by either the FIR/sub-mm emission, the optical
or infrared reddening of starlight, or the extinction of a known background
source. We compare two dust extinction measurements for a set of fifteen
sections in thirteen nearby galaxies, to determine the scale of the dusty ISM
responsible for disk opacity: one using stellar reddening and the other a known
background source. In our earlier papers, we presented extinction measurements
of 29 galaxies, based on calibrated counts of distant background objects
identified though foreground disks in HST/WFPC2 images. For the 13 galaxies
that overlap with the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), we now
compare these results with those obtained from an I-L color map. Our goal is to
determine whether or not a detected distant galaxy indicates a gap in the dusty
ISM, and hence to better understand the nature and geometry of the disk
extinction.
We find that distant galaxies are predominantly in low-extinction sections
marked by the color maps, indicating that their number depends both on the
cloud cover of {\it Spitzer}-resolved dust structures --mostly the spiral
arms--and a diffuse, unresolved underlying disk. We note that our infrared
color map (E[I-L]) underestimates the overall dust presence in these disks
severely, because it implicitly assumes the presence of a dust screen in front

Galaxy Selection and Clustering and Lyman alpha Absorber Identification
The effects of galaxy selection on our ability to constrain the nature of
weak Ly\alpha absorbers at low redshift are explored. Current observations
indicate the existence of a population of gas-rich, low surface brightness
(LSB) galaxies, and these galaxies may have large cross sections for Ly\alpha
absorption. Absorption arising in LSB galaxies may be attributed to HSB
galaxies at larger impact parameters from quasar lines of sight, so that the
observed absorption cross sections of galaxies may seem unreasonably large.
Thus it is not possible to rule out scenarios where LSB galaxies make
substantial contributions to Ly\alpha absorption using direct observations.
Less direct tests, where observational selection effects are taken into account
using simulations, should make it possible to determine the nature of Ly\alpha
absorbers by observing a sample of ~100 galaxies around quasar lines of sight
with well-defined selection criteria. Such tests, which involve comparing
simulated and observed plots of the unidentified absorber fractions and
absorbing galaxy fractions versus impact parameter, can distinguish between
scenarios where absorbers arise in particular galaxies and those where
absorbers arise in gas tracing the large scale galaxy distribution. Care must
be taken to minimize selection effects even when using these tests. Results
from such tests are likely to depend upon the limiting neutral hydrogen column
density. While not enough data are currently available to make a strong
conclusion about the nature of moderately weak absorbers, evidence is seen that
such absorbers arise in gas that is around or between galaxies that are often

House Prices and Consumption Inequality
I characterize how house price shocks affect consumption inequality using a life-cycle model of housing and nonhousing consumption with incomplete markets. I derive analytical expressions for the dynamics of inequalities and use these to analyze large house prices swings seen in the UK. I show that movements in consumption
inequality were large, that they correspond with the theoretical predictions qualitatively, and that the model explains a large fraction of the movements quantitatively. I demonstrate the accuracy of this analysis using an extended model’s full non-linear solution. Finally, accounting for house price shocks alters estimates of labour-income risks using cross-sectional data
Dark and Baryonic Matter in Bright Spiral Galaxies: I.Near-infrared and Optical Broadband Surface Photometry of 30 Galaxies
We present photometrically calibrated images and surface photometry in the B,
V, R, J, H, and K-bands of 25, and in the g, r, and K-bands of 5 nearby bright
(Bo_T<12.5 mag) spiral galaxies with inclinations between 30-65 degrees
spanning the Hubble Sequence from Sa to Scd. Data are from The Ohio State
University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey, the Two Micron All Sky Survey, and the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey Second Data Release. Radial surface brightness
profiles are extracted, and integrated magnitudes are measured from the
profiles. Axis ratios, position angles, and scale lengths are measured from the
near-infrared images. A 1-dimensional bulge/disk decomposition is performed on
the near-infrared images of galaxies with a non-negligible bulge component, and
an exponential disk is fit to the radial surface brightness profiles of the
remaining galaxies.Comment: 28 page
An Interpretation of Radio-loud -- Radio-quiet QSO Differences
Here we speculate on what observations are telling us about the difference
between radio-loud and radio-quiet QSOs. The observations are (i) the relation
between ultraviolet-optical luminosity and `jet power', (ii) the dependences of
emission and absorption line spectra, and the spectral energy distribution, on
radio core-dominance, assumed to be an indicator of orientation, (iii) the
spectral differences between radio-loud and radio-quiet QSOs, and (iv) the
inverse relation between the strength of broad, blended Fe\,II multiplets and
[O\,III]\,5007, and the apparently-related association between Fe\,II
strength, reddening, broad absorption lines, and scattering polarization. We
present and discuss a picture in which there are two main variables: (i) the
inclination of the plane of the host galaxy to the axis of the inner jet (the
central engine's rotation axis), and (ii) the angle of the line-of-sight to
this rotation axis. The radio-loud QSOs are those with jets aiming away from
