Meeting report on the Bellagio Conference ‘prevention of vascular diseases in the emerging world: An approach to global health equity’
Representatives from five international organizations (International Society of Nephrology, World Heart Federation, International Diabetes Federation, International Atherosclerosis Federation, and International Society of Hypertension) participated in a strategic planning workshop in December 2005 in Bellagio, Italy sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. There were equal representatives from developed and developing countries. Global perspectives on diabetes and cardiovascular and renal diseases were presented, with special emphasis on China, India, Latin America, and Africa. The rationale and effectiveness of preventive measures were discussed. It was apparent that measures for primary prevention and early intervention for all the chronic vascular diseases are similar. The five organizations agreed that an integrated global approach to chronic vascular diseases is needed. They resolved to collaborate and work towards an integrated approach to chronic vascular diseases with the establishment of a 5-year plan for the prevention and treatment of chronic vascular diseases, including public advocacy, advising international and national agencies, and improving education and the practice of established approaches

Cell line OCI/AML3 bears exon-12 NPM gene mutation-A and cytoplasmic expression of nucleophosmin
We recently identified a new acute myeloid leukemia (AML) subtype characterized by mutations at exon-12 of the nucleophosmin (NPM) gene and aberrant cytoplasmic expression of NPM protein (NPMc+). NPMc+ AML accounts for about 35% of adult AML and it is associated with normal karyotype, wide morphological spectrum, CD34-negativity, high frequency of FLT3-ITD mutations and good response to induction therapy. In an attempt to identify a human cell line to serve as a model for the in vitro study of NPMc+ AML, we screened 79 myeloid cell lines for mutations at exon-12 of NPM. One of these cell lines, OCI/AML3, showed a TCTG duplication at exon-12 of NPM. This mutation corresponds to the type A, the NPM mutation most frequently observed in primary NPMc+ AML. OCI/AML3 cells also displayed typical phenotypic features of NPMc+ AML, that is, expression of macrophage markers and lack of CD34, and the immunocytochemical hallmark of this leukemia subtype, that is, the aberrant cytoplasmic expression of NPM. The OCI/AML3 cell line easily engrafts in NOD/SCID mice and maintains in the animals the typical features of NPMc+ AML, such as the NPM cytoplasmic expression. For all these reasons, the OCI/AML3 cell line represents a remarkable tool for biomolecular studies of NPMc+ AML
Metamorphosis and Taxonomy of Andreev Bound States
We analyze the spatial and energy dependence of the local density of states
in a SNS junction. We model our system as a one-dimensional tight-binding chain
which we solve exactly by numerical diagonalization. We calculate the
dependence of the Andreev bound states on position, phase difference, gate
voltage, and coupling with the superconducting leads. Our results confirm the
physics predicted by certain analytical approximations, but reveal a much
richer set of phenomena beyond the grasp of these approximations, such as the
metamorphosis of the discrete states of the normal link (the normal bound
states) into Andreev bound states as the leads become superconducting.Comment: 23 pages, 15 figure
