Management as a Symbolizing Construction?

In this article, we outline the concept of management as a symbolizing construction. According to Niklas LUHMANN, organizations process by referring to decisions. But decisions are not simply "given" and in principle invisible. This is the reason why organizations institute formalities like protocols, signatures or other insignia of the official that symbolize the decision—without actually being a decision. These symbols allow for making decisions "process-able." And just like a protocol or a signature, management symbolizes decisions as well. Management provides an organizational practice with symbols of decision making without being the "unity" of the decisions, as decisions perpetually have to be reconstructed, redefined and rearranged in the communication of all organizational units. Therefore management symbolizes on the one hand more than it can achieve. On the other hand the importance of management as a symbolizing construction lies in allowing the reconstruction, redefining and rearrangement of decisions by making them visible and recognizable. Heroic managers, meetings, management tools and procedures are solutions to the paradox of decision making. By symbolizing decidedness they create credibilities that conceal the self-referential construction of organizational communication and the paradox of its decision praxis

Design of post - tensioned concrete slab

In the graduation thesis a design of post-tensioned concrete flat slab is presented. The slab of dimensions 25,5/30,4 m is post-tensioned with unbounded tendons. The thesis is composed of three parts. In the first part, the design procedure according to the code SIST EN 1992-1-1 is briefly presented. In the second part, the slab is analyzed and designed by using the equivalent beams in two directions of the slab. The post-tensioned effects are taken into account by applying the equivalent loading. The losses due to the short term and the long term effects are calculated. Finally, the obtained results are checked with respect to the demands of SIST EN 1992-1-1 code. In the last part of the thesis, the same slab is analyzed by the finite element method computer code. It is modeled by using\ud the quadrilateral plate finite elements and the tendon finite elements. Finite element method results are used to check the punching shear safety and the size of the cracks in concrete

Building in Hongkong. Field Excursion of the Department of Civil Engineering of the HTWG Konstanz 2012

Hongkong steht als Welthandelsmetropole auch für Superlative des Bauens. Dies gilt für die in britischer Zeit errichteten Bauten, aber auch für die nach der Übergabe an China entstandenen Hochhäuser und Brückenbauwerke. Der Exkursionsbericht der Fakultät Bauingenieurwesen der HTWG Konstanz gibt einen Eindruck von diesen Aktivitäten. Er schildert Brücken- und Hochhausbauten, Tunnelbaustellen und die Baustelle eines Klärschlammverbrennungswerks, die während einer Exkursionswoche im September 2012 besichtigt wurden.
