    Triple seesaw mechanism

    Get PDF
On fitting the type II seesaw mechanism into the type I seesaw mechanism, we obtain a formula to the neutrino masses which get suppressed by high-scale M3M^3 in its denominator. As a result, light neutrinos are naturally obtained with new physics at TeV scale. As interesting consequence, the mechanism may be directly probed at the LHC by directly producing the TeV states intrinsic of the mechanism. We show that the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos realizes naturally such seesaw mechanism.Comment: About 13 pages, no figure

(De)Constructing jazz through its performers, repertoire, and musical process: a comparison between Herbie Hancock’s boundary-defying albums Possibilities and River: the Joni Letters

ABSTRACT - The main goal of this article is to address the problem with the construction of the concept of jazz, through the comparison between Herbie Hancock’s Possibilities (2005) and River: The Joni Letters (2007) albums. While River is commonly accepted by most critics as a ‘jazz album’, Possibilities presents a set of features that places it in a non-consensual territory in terms of labelling.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Banking Technology to Scale Microfinance: The Case of Correspondent Banking in Brazil

    Get PDF
Significant population segments in developing countries have very limited access to basic financial services, such as bank accounts, savings or insurance. Meanwhile, the use of ICT is increasingly becoming an intrinsic part of banking business, rendering financial services easier and cheaper to develop and deliver. This paper focuses on ICT-based correspondent banking outlets, a technology that appeared in Brazil in recent years, which is considered a feasible alternative for delivering financial services to the poor. The aim of this paper is to investigate how the use of this particular technology was structured and how it has evolved over time to deliver an increasingly complex range of services. A conceptual model, combining three theoretical approaches, is proposed to make possible an original reading of the use of correspondent banking technology in Brazil and its implications for microfinance

Pluronic F-127 hydrogel as a promising scaffold for encapsulation of dental-derived mesenchymal stem cells.

Dental-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) provide an advantageous therapeutic option for tissue engineering due to their high accessibility and bioavailability. However, delivering MSCs to defect sites while maintaining a high MSC survival rate is still a critical challenge in MSC-mediated tissue regeneration. Here, we tested the osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation capacity of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) in a thermoreversible Pluronic F127 hydrogel scaffold encapsulation system in vitro. DPSCs were encapsulated in Pluronic (®) F-127 hydrogel and stem cell viability, proliferation and differentiation into adipogenic and osteogenic tissues were evaluated. The degradation profile and swelling kinetics of the hydrogel were also analyzed. Our results confirmed that Pluronic F-127 is a promising and non-toxic scaffold for encapsulation of DPSCs as well as control human bone marrow MSCs (hBMMSCs), yielding high stem cell viability and proliferation. Moreover, after 2 weeks of differentiation in vitro, DPSCs as well as hBMMSCs exhibited high levels of mRNA expression for osteogenic and adipogenic gene markers via PCR analysis. Our histochemical staining further confirmed the ability of Pluronic F-127 to direct the differentiation of these stem cells into osteogenic and adipogenic tissues. Furthermore, our results revealed that Pluronic F-127 has a dense tubular and reticular network morphology, which contributes to its high permeability and solubility, consistent with its high degradability in the tested conditions. Altogether, our findings demonstrate that Pluronic F-127 is a promising scaffold for encapsulation of DPSCs and can be considered for cell delivery purposes in tissue engineering

Disentangling the near infrared continuum spectral components of the inner 500 pc of Mrk 573: two-dimensional maps

We present a near infrared study of the spectral components of the continuum in the inner 500×\times500 pc2^2 of the nearby Seyfert galaxy Mrk573 using adaptive optics near-infrared integral field spectroscopy with the instrument NIFS of the Gemini North Telescope at a spatial resolution of \sim50 pc. We performed spectral synthesis using the {\sc starlight} code and constructed maps for the contributions of different age components of the stellar population: young (age100age\leq100 Myr), young-intermediate (100<age700100<age\leq700 Myr), intermediate-old (700700 Myr 22 Gyr) to the near-IR K-band continuum, as well as their contribution to the total stellar mass. We found that the old stellar population is dominant within the inner 250 pc, while the intermediate age components dominate the continuum at larger distances. A young stellar component contributes up to \sim20% within the inner \sim70 pc, while hot dust emission and featureless continuum components are also necessary to fit the nuclear spectrum, contributing up to 20% of the K-band flux there. The radial distribution of the different age components in the inner kiloparsec of Mrk573 is similar to those obtained by our group for the Seyfert galaxies Mrk1066, Mrk1157 and NGC1068 in previous works using a similar methodology. Young stellar populations (\leq100 Myr) are seen in the inner 200-300 pc for all galaxies contributing with \ge20% of the K-band flux, while the near-IR continuum is dominated by the contribution of intermediate-age stars (t=t=100 Myr-2 Gyr) at larger distances. Older stellar populations dominate in the inner 250 pc
