    Long-term Blood Pressure Prediction with Deep Recurrent Neural Networks

    Existing methods for arterial blood pressure (BP) estimation directly map the input physiological signals to output BP values without explicitly modeling the underlying temporal dependencies in BP dynamics. As a result, these models suffer from accuracy decay over a long time and thus require frequent calibration. In this work, we address this issue by formulating BP estimation as a sequence prediction problem in which both the input and target are temporal sequences. We propose a novel deep recurrent neural network (RNN) consisting of multilayered Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, which are incorporated with (1) a bidirectional structure to access larger-scale context information of input sequence, and (2) residual connections to allow gradients in deep RNN to propagate more effectively. The proposed deep RNN model was tested on a static BP dataset, and it achieved root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.90 and 2.66 mmHg for systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) prediction respectively, surpassing the accuracy of traditional BP prediction models. On a multi-day BP dataset, the deep RNN achieved RMSE of 3.84, 5.25, 5.80 and 5.81 mmHg for the 1st day, 2nd day, 4th day and 6th month after the 1st day SBP prediction, and 1.80, 4.78, 5.0, 5.21 mmHg for corresponding DBP prediction, respectively, which outperforms all previous models with notable improvement. The experimental results suggest that modeling the temporal dependencies in BP dynamics significantly improves the long-term BP prediction accuracy.Comment: To appear in IEEE BHI 201

It carries on the transverse comparison research on the effective utilization situation of human resources in China in 2008 and reveals the actual situation of efficient use of human resources in the provinces in China. The degree of effective use of human resources in Beijing is the highest, while in Ningxia is the lowest. It is closely related to the economic development. Finally, it puts forward the thoughts and suggestions of improving the effective use of human resources in China

    With the increasing of complexity of complex mechatronic products, it is necessary to involve multidisciplinary design teams, thus, the traditional customer requirements modeling for a single discipline team becomes difficult to be applied in a multidisciplinary team and project since team members with various disciplinary backgrounds may have different interpretations of the customers’ requirements. A new synthesized multidisciplinary customer requirements modeling method is provided for obtaining and describing the common understanding of customer requirements (CRs) and more importantly transferring them into a detailed and accurate product design specifications (PDS) to interact with different team members effectively. A case study of designing a high speed train verifies the rationality and feasibility of the proposed multidisciplinary requirement modeling method for complex mechatronic product development.     An evolutionary particle filter with the immune genetic algorithm for intelligent video target tracking

    AbstractParticle filter algorithm is widely used for target tracking using video sequences, which is of great importance for intelligent surveillance applications. However, there is still much room for improvement, e.g. the so-called “sample impoverishment”. It is brought by re-sampling which aims to avoid particle degradation, and thus becomes the inherent shortcoming of the particle filter. In order to solve the problem of sample impoverishment, increase the number of meaningful particles and ensure the diversity of the particle set, an evolutionary particle filter with the immune genetic algorithm (IGA) for target tracking is proposed by adding IGA in front of the re-sampling process to increase particle diversity. Particles are regarded as the antibodies of the immune system, and the state of target being tracked is regarded as the external invading antigen. With the crossover and mutation process, the immune system produces a large number of new antibodies (particles), and thus the new particles can better approximate the true state by exploiting new areas. Regulatory mechanisms of antibodies, such as promotion and suppression, ensure the diversity of the particle set. In the proposed algorithm, the particle set optimized by IGA can better express the true state of the target, and the number of meaningful particles can be increased significantly. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed particle filter are verified by target tracking experiments. Simulation results show that the proposed particle filter is better than the standard one in particle diversity and efficiency. The proposed algorithm can easily be extended to multiple objects tracking problems with occlusions

    Comparison Between Electropositive and Electronegative Cold Atmospheric-Pressure Plasmas: A Modelling Study

    Cold atmospheric-pressure He + N2 and He + O2 plasmas are chosen as the representatives for electropositive and electronegative plasmas, of which the discharge characteristics are studied and then compared to each other by fluid models. As the increase of the impurity (N2 or O2) fraction from 0 to 10%, for He + N2 plasmas the electron density and ion density increase, the spatiotemporal distributions of electron density, ion density, electron temperature and electron generation rate change a little. On contrast, for He + O2 plasmas the electron density decreases, the ion density first increases and then decreases, the electron temperature increases in the bulk region, but decreases in the sheath region, and the plasmas transform from ᵞ mode to α mode as the significant change of electron generation rate distributions. Larger electric field is needed in the bulk region to sustain the electronegative plasma, so the electrical characteristics of He + O2 plasmas transform form capacitive to resistive with increasing O2fraction. Meanwhile, the ion-coupling power increases dramatically, which can be estimated by a formula based on the electronegativity. A new criterion for determining the sheath boundary, |ΔE| = 5 kV/cm2, is put forward, which is found suitable for both the electropositive and electronegative plasmas

    Neurocalcin-delta: a potential memory-related factor in hippocampus of obese rats induced by high-fat diet.

    Introduction: Aberrant protein expression within the hippocampus has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity- induced memory impairment.Objectives: The objective of the current study was to search for specific memory-related factors in the hippocampus in obese rats.Methods: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were fed either a high-fat (HF) diet or normal-fat (NF) diet for 10 weeks to obtain the control (CON), diet-induced obese rats (DIO) and diet-resistant (DR) rats. D-galactose was injected subcutaneously for 10 weeks to establish model (MOD) rats with learning and memory impairment. After the hippocampus of the rats sampling, the proteome analysis was conducted using two-dimensional get electrophoresis (2-DE) combined with peptide mass fingerprinting (PMF).Results: We found 15 differential proteins that expressed in the hippocampus in rats induced by HF diet from the 2-DE map. In addition, Neurocalcin-delta (NCALD) was nearly down-regulated in the DR rats compared with CON rats and MOD rats, which was further confirmed by Western blot, real-time PCR and ELISA results.Conclusion: Our data demonstrates that the differential memory-related proteins were a reflection of the HF diet, but not potential factors in obesity proneness or obesity resistance. Furthermore, NCALD is proved to be a potential hippocampus-memory related factor related to obesity.Keywords: Diet-induced obesity; diet-resistant; high fat diet; neurocalcin-delta; proteom

    Penicillamine Increases Free Copper and Enhances Oxidative Stress in the Brain of Toxic Milk Mice

    Wilson disease (WD) is characterized by the accumulation of copper arising from a mutation in the ATP7B gene. Penicillamine (PA) makes 10–50% of the patients with neurologic symptoms neurologically worse at the early stage of administration. The aim of this study was to determine how the copper metabolism changes and whether the change impairs the brain of toxic milk (tx) mice, an animal model of WD, during the PA administration. The free copper and protein-bound copper concentrations in the serum, cortex and basal ganglia of tx mice with PA administration for 3 days, 10 days and 14 days, respectively, were investigated. The expression of copper transporters, ATP7A and CTR1,was analyzed by real-time quantitative PCR, immunofluorescence and Western blot. Then SOD, MDA and GSH/GSSG were detected to determine whether the oxidative stress changed correspondingly. The results revealed the elevated free copper concentrations in the serum and brain, and declined protein-bound copper concentrations in the brain of tx mice during PA administration. Meanwhile, transiently increased expression of ATP7A and CTR1 was observed generally in the brain parenchyma by immunofluorescence, real-time quantitative PCR and Western blot. Additionally, ATP7A and CTR1 were observed to locate mainly at Golgi apparatus and cellular membrane respectively. Intense staining of ATP7A in the choroid plexus was found in tx mice on the 3rd and 10th day of PA treatment, but rare staining of ATP7A and CTR1 in the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Decreased GSH/GSSG and increased MDA concentrations were also viewed in the cortex and basal ganglia. Our results suggested the elevated free copper concentrations in the brain might lead to the enhanced oxidative stress during PA administration. The increased free copper in the brain might come from the copper mobilized from brain parenchyma cells but not from the serum according to the ATP7A and CTR1 expression analysis

    Seed Dormancy, Seedling Establishment and Dynamics of the Soil Seed Bank of \u3cem\u3eStipa Bungeana\u3c/em\u3e (Poaceae) on the Loess Plateau of Northwestern China

    Studying seed dormancy and its consequent effect can provide important information for vegetation restoration and management. The present study investigated seed dormancy, seedling emergence and seed survival in the soil seed bank of Stipa bungeana, a grass species used in restoration of degraded land on the Loess Plateau in northwest China. Dormancy of fresh seeds was determined by incubation of seeds over a range of temperatures in both light and dark. Seed germination was evaluated after mechanical removal of palea and lemma (hulls), chemical scarification and dry storage. Fresh and one-year-stored seeds were sown in the field, and seedling emergence was monitored weekly for 8 weeks. Furthermore, seeds were buried at different soil depths, and then retrieved every 1 or 2 months to determine seed dormancy and seed viability in the laboratory. Fresh seeds (caryopses enclosed by palea and lemma) had non-deep physiological dormancy. Removal of palea and lemma, chemical scarification, dry storage (afterripening), gibberellin (GA3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3) significantly improved germination. Dormancy was completely released by removal of the hulls, but seeds on which hulls were put back to their original position germinated to only 46%. Pretreatment of seeds with a 30% NaOH solution for 60 min increased germination from 25% to 82%. Speed of seedling emergence from fresh seeds was significantly lower than that of seeds stored for 1 year. However, final percentage of seedling emergence did not differ significantly for seeds sown at depths of 0 and 1 cm. Most fresh seeds of S. bungeana buried in the field in early July either had germinated or lost viability by September. All seeds buried at a depth of 5 cm had lost viability after 5 months, whereas 12% and 4% seeds of those sown on the soil surface were viable after 5 and 12 months, respectively

    Acute Mountain Sickness Is Associated With a High Ratio of Endogenous Testosterone to Estradiol After High-Altitude Exposure at 3,700 m in Young Chinese Men

    Background: A large proportion of populations suffer from acute mountain sickness (AMS) after exposure at high altitude. AMS is closely related with age and gender implying that the sex hormones may play critical roles in AMS. Our observational study aimed to identify the association between the endogenous testosterone (T), estradiol (E2) and AMS.Methods: A total of 113 subjects were recruited in 2012. The participants were evaluated at 500 m and after acute (1 day) and short-term (7 days) high-altitude exposure at 3,700 m. The subjects also completed a case report form questionnaire and underwent blood pressure measurements and an echocardiography examination. The red blood cell (RBC) count, Hb concentration ([Hb]), hematocrit (HCT), E2, T, and erythropoietin (EPO) were measured.Results: Upon acute high-altitude exposure, E2 and EPO were significantly lower in AMS+ group, and T/E2 and stroke volume were higher. On the 1st day, AMS score correlated positively with the T/E2 ratio while it negatively correlated with E2. After 7 days at 3,700 m, the AMS+ subjects had higher erythropoietic parameters: EPO, T, and T/E2 were significantly higher in the AMS+ group. [Hb], RBC count, HCT, EPO, T and T/E2 were also correlated with AMS score. EPO, HCT, and the RBC count were also correlated with T/E2. Regression analyses indicated that T/E2 significantly correlated to AMS score and T/E2 on the 1st day was an independent predictor for AMS on the 7th day.Conclusion: AMS was correlated with T/E2 ratio and EPO. After short-term exposure, higher T/E2 may contribute to AMS together with EPO via erythropoiesis. Furthermore, T/E2 level at high altitude in the early stage was an independent predictor for AMS in the latter stage
