    Forcing function control of Faraday wave instabilities in viscous shallow fluids

    We investigate the relationship between the linear surface wave instabilities of a shallow viscous fluid layer and the shape of the periodic, parametric-forcing function (describing the vertical acceleration of the fluid container) that excites them. We find numerically that the envelope of the resonance tongues can only develop multiple minima when the forcing function has more than two local extrema per cycle. With this insight, we construct a multi-frequency forcing function that generates at onset a non-trivial harmonic instability which is distinct from a subharmonic response to any of its frequency components. We measure the corresponding surface patterns experimentally and verify that small changes in the forcing waveform cause a transition, through a bicritical point, from the predicted harmonic short-wavelength pattern to a much larger standard subharmonic pattern. Using a formulation valid in the lubrication regime (thin viscous fluid layer) and a WKB method to find its analytic solutions, we explore the origin of the observed relation between the forcing function shape and the resonance tongue structure. In particular, we show that for square and triangular forcing functions the envelope of these tongues has only one minimum, as in the usual sinusoidal case.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Evidence for cross-protection but not type-replacement over the 11 years after human papillomavirus vaccine introduction

    Examination of cross-protection and type replacement after human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine introduction is essential to guide vaccination recommendations and policies. The aims of this study were to examine trends in non-vaccine-type HPV: 1) genetically related to vaccine types (to assess for cross-protection) and 2) genetically unrelated to vaccine types (to assess for type replacement), among young women 13-26 years of age during the 11 years after HPV vaccine introduction. Participants were recruited from a hospital-based teen health center and a community health department for four cross-sectional surveillance studies between 2006 and 2017. Participants completed a survey that assessed sociodemographic characteristics and behaviors, and cervicovaginal swabs were collected and tested for 36 HPV genotypes. We determined changes in proportions of non-vaccine-type HPV prevalence and conducted logistic regression to determine the odds of infection across the surveillance studies, propensity-score adjusted to control for selection bias. Analyses were stratified by vaccination status. Among vaccinated women who received only the 4-valent vaccine (n = 1,540), the adjusted prevalence of HPV types genetically related to HPV16 decreased significantly by 45.8% (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 0.48, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.31-0.74) from 2006-2017, demonstrating evidence of cross-protection. The adjusted prevalence of HPV types genetically related to HPV18 did not change significantly (14.2% decrease, AOR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.56-1.21). The adjusted prevalence of HPV types genetically unrelated to vaccine types did not change significantly (4.2% increase, AOR = 1.09, CI = 0.80-1.48), demonstrating no evidence of type replacement. Further studies are needed to monitor for cross-protection and possible type replacement after introduction of the 9-valent HPV vaccine

    Finding Person Relations in Image Data of the Internet Archive

    The multimedia content in the World Wide Web is rapidly growing and contains valuable information for many applications in different domains. For this reason, the Internet Archive initiative has been gathering billions of time-versioned web pages since the mid-nineties. However, the huge amount of data is rarely labeled with appropriate metadata and automatic approaches are required to enable semantic search. Normally, the textual content of the Internet Archive is used to extract entities and their possible relations across domains such as politics and entertainment, whereas image and video content is usually neglected. In this paper, we introduce a system for person recognition in image content of web news stored in the Internet Archive. Thus, the system complements entity recognition in text and allows researchers and analysts to track media coverage and relations of persons more precisely. Based on a deep learning face recognition approach, we suggest a system that automatically detects persons of interest and gathers sample material, which is subsequently used to identify them in the image data of the Internet Archive. We evaluate the performance of the face recognition system on an appropriate standard benchmark dataset and demonstrate the feasibility of the approach with two use cases

    Proton-Antiproton Annihilation in Baryonium

    A possible interpretation of the near-threshold enhancement in the (ppˉ)(p\bar{p})-mass spectrum in J/ψγppˉJ/\psi{\to}\gamma p{\bar p} is the of existence of a narrow baryonium resonance X(1860). Mesonic decays of the (ppˉ)(p\bar{p})-bound state X(1860) due to the nucleon-antinucleon annihilation are investigated in this paper. Mesonic coherent states with fixed GG-parity and PP-parity have been constructed . The Amado-Cannata-Dedoder-Locher-Shao formulation(Phys Rev Lett. {\bf 72}, 970 (1994)) is extended to the decays of the X(1860). By this method, the branch-fraction ratios of Br(Xη4π)Br(X\to \eta 4\pi), Br(Xη2π)Br(X\to \eta 2\pi) and Br(X3η)Br(X\to 3\eta) are calculated. It is shown that if the X(1860) is a bound state of (ppˉ)(p\bar{p}), the decay channel (Xη4π)X\to \eta 4\pi) is favored over (Xη2π)(X\to \eta 2\pi). In this way, we develop criteria for distinguishing the baryonium interpretation for the near-threshold enhancement effects in (ppˉ)(p\bar{p})-mass spectrum in J/ψγppˉJ/\psi{\to}\gamma p{\bar p} from other possibilities. Experimental checks are expected. An intuitive picture for our results is discussed.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure

    Epidemiology of Any and Vaccine-Type Anogenital Human Papillomavirus Among 13-26-Year-Old Young Men After HPV Vaccine Introduction

    PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to determine prevalence of and factors associated with any human papillomavirus (HPV) and vaccine-type HPV among young men after vaccine introduction, stratified by vaccination status. METHODS: Young men were recruited from clinical sites from 2013 to 2015, completed a survey, and were tested for 36 anogenital HPV types. We determined factors associated with ≥1 HPV type among all participants, and vaccine-type HPV (HPV6, 11, 16, and/or 18) among all, vaccinated and unvaccinated participants, using multivariable regression. RESULTS: Mean age was 21.5 years and 26% had received at least one HPV vaccine dose. HPV prevalence was lower in vaccinated versus unvaccinated young men (50.5% vs. 62.6%, p = .03). HPV positivity was discordant by anogenital site. At both sites, 59.4% were positive for ≥1 HPV type and 26.0% for ≥1 4-valent vaccine type. In multivariable logistic regression, factors associated with ≥1 HPV type among all participants were frequency of oral sex (odds ratio [OR] = 1.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.00-3.24), recent smoking (OR = 1.84, CI = 1.17-2.90), and sexually transmitted infection history (OR = 1.56, CI = 1.02-2.38). Factors associated with vaccine-type HPV among all participants were white versus black race (OR = 1.91, CI = 1.10-3.34) and gonorrhea history (OR = 2.52, CI = 1.45-4.38); among vaccinated participants were private versus Medicaid insurance (OR = 5.6, CI = 1.46-20.4) and private versus no insurance (OR = 15.9, CI = 3.06-83.3); and among unvaccinated participants was gonorrhea history (OR = 1.83, CI = 1.03-3.24). CONCLUSIONS: Anogenital HPV prevalence was high and vaccination rates low among young men 2-4 years after vaccine introduction, underscoring the urgency of increasing vaccination rates and vaccinating according to national guidelines

    Phase Diagram of the Half-Filled Extended Hubbard Model in Two Dimensions

    We consider an extended Hubbard model of interacting fermions on a lattice. The fermion kinetic energy corresponds to a tight binding Hamiltonian with nearest neighbour (-t) and next nearest neighbour (t') hopping matrix elements. In addition to the onsite Hubbard interaction (U) we also consider a nearest neighbour repulsion (V). We obtain the zero temperature phase diagram of our model within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We consider ground states having charge and spin density wave ordering as well as states with orbital antiferromagnetism or spin nematic order. The latter two states correspond to particle-hole binding with dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry in the charge and spin channels respectively. For t=0t' = 0, only the charge density wave and spin density wave states are energetically stable. For non-zero t', we find that orbital antiferromagnetism (or spin nematic) order is stable over a finite portion of the phase diagram at weak coupling.     The wave-vector power spectrum of the local tunnelling density of states: ripples in a d-wave sea

    A weak scattering potential imposed on a CuO2CuO_2 layer of a cuprate superconductor modulates the local density of states N(x,ω)N(x,\omega). In recently reported experimental studies scanning-tunneling maps of N(x,ω)N(x,\omega) have been Fourier transformed to obtain a wave-vector power spectrum. Here, for the case of a weak scattering potential, we discuss the structure of this power spectrum and its relationship to the quasi-particle spectrum and the structure factor of the scattering potential.
