    P for Politics D for Dialogue: Reflections on Participatory Design with Children and Animals

    Participatory Design strives to open up the decision-making process and empower all those who may be affected by design. This is opposed to Design as a non-participatory process, in which the power to make decisions is vested in the hands of one group to the possible detriment of others. In this paper we interrogate the nature, possibilities and limitations of Participatory Design through the perspective of Child Computer Interaction (CCI) and Animal Computer Interaction (ACI). Due to the cognitive and communication characteristics, and to the social and legal status of their participants, researchers in these communities have to contend with and challenge existing notions of participation and design. Thus, their theories and practices provide a lens through which the nature and goals of Participatory Design can be examined with a view to facilitating the development of more inclusive participatory models and practices

    Oligoasthenoteratozoospermia and Infertility in Mice Deficient for miR-34b/c and miR-449 Loci

    Male fertility requires the continuous production of high quality motile spermatozoa in abundance. Alterations in all three metrics cause oligoasthenoteratozoospermia, the leading cause of human sub/infertility. Post-mitotic spermatogenesis inclusive of several meiotic stages and spermiogenesis (terminal spermatozoa differentiation) are transcriptionally inert, indicating the potential importance for the post-transcriptional microRNA (miRNA) gene-silencing pathway therein. We found the expression of miRNA generating enzyme Dicer within spermatogenesis peaks in meiosis with critical functions in spermatogenesis. In an expression screen we identified two miRNA loci of the miR-34 family (miR-34b/c and miR-449) that are specifically and highly expressed in post-mitotic male germ cells. A reduction in several miRNAs inclusive of miR-34b/c in spermatozoa has been causally associated with reduced fertility in humans. We found that deletion of both miR34b/c and miR-449 loci resulted in oligoasthenoteratozoospermia in mice. MiR-34bc/449-deficiency impairs both meiosis and the final stages of spermatozoa maturation. Analysis of miR-34bc-/-;449-/- pachytene spermatocytes revealed a small cohort of genes deregulated that were highly enriched for miR-34 family target genes. Our results identify the miR-34 family as the first functionally important miRNAs for spermatogenesis whose deregulation is causal to oligoasthenoteratozoospermia and infertility

    Developing Participatory Methods to Consider the Ethics of Emerging Technologies for Children (Extended Abstract)

    This SIG will provide child-computer interaction researchers and practitioners, as well as other interested CHI attendees, an opportunity to discuss topics related to developing participatory methods to consider the ethics of emerging technologies for children. While the community has extensively debated on ethical issues, we have not had ample discussion of methods to study the ethical implications of emerging technologies. Consequently, we have been largely reactive and have not made significant contributions to public discussions on these topics, leaving these largely to experts from other fields. Our community is well-placed to contribute unique perspectives by leveraging its expertise in participatory methods, combining expert views with those of stakeholders, including children

    Designing for participation in public knowledge institutions

    We address the challenges facing designers of interactive technologies for public knowledge institutions such as museums, libraries and science centres. We argue that visitor participation is a key concern for these institutions and present a theoretical framework for understanding participation grounded in pragmatist philosophy. We then present design work carried out in three different settings, namely a museum, a combined aquarium and science centre, and a municipal library. Based on a discussion of these design cases, we offer six design considerations for designing for participation in public knowledge institutions

    A Large-Scale Design Thinking Project Seen from the Perspective of Participants

    Design thinking is increasingly being used as an approach to facilitate participatory organizational change. However, we know little about how such processes are experienced by the people who participate in them. In this paper, we therefore present a case study of the participants\u27 perspective in a large-scale design thinking project in a public library. The project embodies a series of issues that arise when design thinking approaches are applied to large-scale, IT-oriented design projects. The study is based on interviews and observations conducted before, during and after the project, and the findings from the study focus on how results from design thinking projects are (or are not) implemented in organizations, what it takes to be "a good participant", how vague project objectives can create both motivation and frustration, and how the potentially stressful experiences of working in organizations that undergo constant transformations affect project participants
