Perverse incentives of special purpose acquisition companies, the “poor man's private equity funds”

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Available online 19 October 2016pecial purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) are an alternative investment, structured as a one-shot private equity (PE) deal. Significant cross-sectional variation exists in SPACs' performance, which can be explained by the strong implicit incentives embedded in contracts. SPAC performance is worse for acquisitions announced near the predetermined two-year deadline, for acquisitions with deferred initial public offering underwriting fees, and for acquisitions with market value close to the required 80% threshold. Also, sponsors' involvement in the merged firm's governance improves long-term performance. This evidence has important implications given SPACs' high popularity in recent years and the new PE industry's trend toward deal-by-deal fund-raising

EVALUATION OF SOME CLINICO-LABORATORY AND CYTOPHOTOMETRIC PARAMETERS AS EARLY DIAGNOSTIC TESTS FOR LEAD INTOXICATION

    Get PDF
The clinical manifestation and extent of intoxication by lead aerosols in 51 workers from lead-dangerous manufactures has been follow ed-up. The values of erythrocytometric and laboratory parameters have been estimated. Significant aberrations in the mean erythrocyte diameter, mean erythrocyte thickness and mean erythrocyte spherical index as well as in the urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid excretion have been established during the preclinical stage of saturnism. Morphometric parameters along with delta-aminolevulinic acid possess the highest information value concerning lead intoxication followed by blood hemoglobin values. Both moderate reticulocytosis and erythrocytes with basophilic punctations are insufficiently indicative for the early etiologic diagnosis. Cytomorphometric abnormalities which become more outlined with advancing pathological alterations are of high specificity and validity as early diagnostic tests for lead intoxication

When correction turns positive: Processing corrective prosody in Dutch

Current research on spoken language does not provide a consistent picture as to whether prosody, the melody and rhythm of speech, conveys a specific meaning. Perception studies show that English listeners assign meaning to prosodic patterns, and, for instance, associate some accents with contrast, whereas Dutch listeners behave more controversially. In two ERP studies we tested how Dutch listeners process words carrying two types of accents, which either provided new information (new information accents) or corrected information (corrective accents), both in single sentences (experiment 1) and after corrective and new information questions (experiment 2). In both experiments corrective accents elicited a sustained positivity as compared to new information accents, which started earlier in context than in single sentences. The positivity was not modulated by the nature of the preceding question, suggesting that the underlying neural mechanism likely reflects the construction of an interpretation to the accented word, either by identifying an alternative in context or by inferring it when no context is present. Our experimental results provide strong evidence for inferential processes related to prosodic contours in Dutc

SECONDARY RAYNAUD PHENOMENON IN WORKERS EXPOSED TO LOCAL VIBRATIONS

    Get PDF
Forty-one workers (28 males and 13 females) with secondary Raynaud phenomenon were studied.  They were divided into two groups: group one - 28 workers exposed to vibrations and group two - 13 workers with overstrain and microtraumatism. The professional route, electroneurography, vegeto-vascular state, cryoglobulins, and erythrocytic antibodies were followed-up. The clinical diagnosis of vibration disease was proved in 24 workers (or 58,5 per cent of the cases). Immunohematologically, erythrocytic antibodies were found out in 13 of these patients. The relationship between the high percentage of erythrocytic antibodies and the secondary Raynaud phenomenon with the workers exposed to local vibrations was discussed
