    Over the past two to three decades in outdoor education circles, there has been a gradual swell of interest in bringing a gender lens to the examination of issues, theory and practice within the field. Although feminist theory has been subjected to lively debate and undergone sophisticated shifts in the ways of conceptualizing and analyzing gender, much of the literature coming out of the outdoor field and much of our practice is still centered on women and difference. As Bell (1997) so clearly asked, “Has the dialogue on the nature of gender and associated social issues not changed in the past decade?” A group of international researchers, educators and practitioners discussed gender theory and practice in their “neck of the woods” and challenged attendees to ask that question again today

    Fibre interferometry for differential measurements

    This thesis investigates the use of interferometry as an interrogation technology for the measurement of differential length at two widely separate locations. Differential length measurements are essential and can have many applications in industrial processes, therefore accurate measurements can be a critical. Such differential length measurements can be applied to aspects of differential pressure. Using an all optical fibre approach, the research utilises the effects of light interference for both low coherent and high coherent light sources for the determination of a differential length between individual sensing cavities separated by up to 10’s of meters. The construction of the differential length interrogation system makes use of two Fabry-Perot cavities arranged in a tandem configuration, as a means of determining the differential length between them. Such an arrangement provides a common path through which an optical broadband light source at a central wavelength of 1550 nm can propagate. As a consequence of this configuration, differential lengths are made simply using one single measurement, removing the need to determine each individual length. An additional benefit of this common optical path prevents environmental factors such as temperature and air pressures from affecting the measurement length in question. Using a scanning reference Michelson interferometer to induce an optical path change, low coherence interference effects are present when the optical path length of the differential Fabry-Perot cavities is equal to the optical path length difference in the Michelson interferometer. Using a separate DFB laser light source to illuminate the reference interferometer high coherence interference fringes, present when the optical path length of one interferometer arm is changing due to a piezo fibre stretcher, can be analysed to provide an accurate length determination. Taking into consideration the noise within the system the interrogation technique has a length measurement resolution of 27.43 nm. Demonstrations show that a differential length of 82.539 ÎŒm could be measured with an uncertainty of 41.00 nm. Through the characterisation of a deformable silicon diaphragm, it would be possible to construct a sensing system capable of measuring a differential pressure of 1 Pa in 100 kPa. This however would require a 9.13 mm thick diaphragm, with a radius of 0.35 m. Such a diaphragm would be out of the question and so further investigation into reducing the length measurement resolution would need to be carried out

    Palliative Care Patients and their Quality of Life As Perceived By the Patient and their Caregiver

    This quantitative pilot study examined the quality of life of palliative care patients as perceived by the patient and their caregiver. Patients with palliative care consults at The University of Colorado and The Medical Center of Aurora were asked to participate in this study. The McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire survey tool was selected to measure the patient\u27s quality of life due to its validity and reliability in measuring quality of life in the palliative care patient population. The McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire consists of five distinct subscales: physical well-being, physical symptoms, psychological symptoms, existential well-being, and support. Sixteen patients and eight caregivers completed the survey. Results: The results of paired samples tests demonstrated p-values that were not statistically significant for the five subscales measured. They indicated weak evidence against the null hypothesis. Based on the p-value results the null hypothesis can not be rejected. Based on the Cronbach\u27s alpha the internal consistency (reliability) for this study for the patient scores was 0.625 and for the families it was 0.606 which does not meet the standard of 0.70 or greater. If item number eight was removed from both the patient and the family questionnaires the Cronbach\u27s alpha increased to 0.691 and 0.706 respectively. The study indicated a weak correlation between the patient and family subscales. Discussion: Based on the small sample size the weak correlation could be anticipated. Further research is warranted to see if, given a larger sample size, the reliability could be improved and a finding illuminated. Detection of differences may have been missed due to the small sample size and inadequate illumination
