Finite Approximations of Physical Models over Local Fields

We show that the Schr\"odinger operator associated with a physical system over a local field can be approximated in a very strong sense by finite Schr\"odinger operators. Some striking numerical results are included at the end of the article

Order out of chaos - Highlighting the chaos inherent in the order. How Hunter S. Thompson’s early texts give value to fiction by challenging the authority of politically constructed truths

This master's thesis concerns Hunter S. Thompson and his position in the canon of American fiction writers. Through a literary reading of a number of Thompson's early articles from the collection The Great Shark Hunt, published by Summit Books in 1979, I distance Thompson from his designated role as Duke of Gonzo" and analyse the texts on their substantial literary merit. From my reading, Thompson should be recognized as a writer of fiction as his works contain numerous critical elements which makes it reductive to speak of them as journalism. From a theoretical backdrop of Mikhail Bakhtin, Derek Attridge and Rafe McGregor I show how the distinction between journalism and literature lies in the portrayal and understanding of truth, and how truth is a concept is dependent on subjective interpretation. The main argument of the thesis' latter half concerns how, when noticed, the persistent political discussion of who owns and authoritatively claims to present the whole truth is more of a red thread in Thompson's work than his comical discursions into depravity. By reading Thompson as a writer of fiction, this thesis seeks to highlight one of the reasons why literature remains an important democratic tool in modern society.Denne masteroppgaven omhandler Hunter S. Thompson og hans plass i den litterære kanon over amerikanske skjønnlitterære forfattere. Gjennom en lesning av Thompsons tidlige artikler hentet fra samlingen The Great Shark Hunt utgitt av Summit Books i 1979, distanserer jeg Thompson fra hans utnevnte rolle som «Duke of Gonzo» og analyserer hans verker på bakgrunn av de litterære kvaliteter som finnes i dem. Ut fra min lesning bør Thompson bli anerkjent som skjønnlitterær forfatter, da hans tekster innehar vesentlige elementer som gjør det begrensende å definere dem som journalistikk. Med et teoretisk bakteppe fra Mikhail Bakhtin, Derek Attridge og Rafe McGregor viser jeg hvordan skillet mellom journalistikk og fiksjon baserer seg på fremstillingen av sannhet, og hvordan sannhet som konsept krever subjektiv tolkning. Hovedpoenget i oppgavens andre halvdel er at når den blir lagt merke til, er den politiske diskusjonen om hvem som eier og autoritativt hevder å presentere en fullstendig sannhet, en mer logisk rød tråd enn Thompsons utskeielser som komisk figur. A workflow-integrated brain tumor segmentation system based on fastai and MONAI

Artificial intelligence (AI) has achieved great results in medical imaging tasks and has the potential to improve the experiences of clinicians and patients in the future, but on the way toward AI integration in medicine, there are many practical, technical, and societal challenges. In this thesis, we contribute to the development of AI integration in Helse Vest and present a brain tumor segmentation system integrated with their existing research PACS solution. We investigate to which degree integration of machine learning models is currently possible and if additional software development efforts are needed. The machine learning model used is developed with a library combining the two python-based deep learning libraries fastai and MONAI. This library is currently under development by researchers at Mohn Medical Imaging and Visualization Centre (MMIV), and we compare it with another state-of-the-art framework to quantify its potential usefulness. Additionally, we deploy it in a simple interactive web application. The thesis contains three studies that were conducted to discuss and answer our research goals. All studies used medical data from a data set coming out of the BraTS 2021 segmentation challenge, and our project is a part of MMIV's WIML project. Our achieved results open the way for future developers to continue workflow integrated machine learning in research PACS, and we see many possible directions to take future research.Masteroppgave i Programutvikling samarbeid med HVLPROG399MAMN-PRO

E-learning, Social Media and Apprenticeship : Learning at Work in a Grocery Store

In this thesis I have explored how learning takes place in a grocery store. Based on a previous research of the E-learning program in a Norwegian supermarket chain, I aimed to do a further research in one of the supermarkets. The merchant in this supermarket had created a Facebook group in order to share information with his employees. I was curious about how that Facebook group could mediate learning in the supermarket. My research questions aimed to explore how training is organized, how informal learning takes place, and how knowledge is facilitated and by what means. I conducted a virtual ethnography of the Facebook group, and qualitative interviews with the merchant and three employees. The data indicates that apprenticeship learning is preferred as training method rather than conventional E-learning. The E-learning courses provided by the supermarket chain facilitate instruction and content delivery, and can relate to Web 1.0 technologies. Apprenticeship learning, on the other hand, facilitates social interaction and learning by doing, and can relate to Web 2.0. Another finding indicates that the Facebook group in the supermarket is a platform for information delivery rather than discussion, and is therefore used as a Web 1.0 tool rather than a Web 2.0 tool. In addition to the Facebook group, the workers in the supermarket use pocket notes in order to remember work routines and tasks. These notes might function as reminders for knowledge available in the world or as scaffolding for internalizing the knowledge in the head. Further, the informants make a clear distinction between information sharing and the Facebook group on the one side, and learning and training on the other. The Facebook group thus functions as a tool for living, while the E-learning courses and the apprenticeship learning function as tools for learning

Verdensbilder og selvbilder : norske bistands- og misjonsorganisasjoners bilder av Afrika : en studie av Norges Røde Kors og Norsk Luthersk Misjonssambands tekster om Kenya og Etiopia i periodene 1980-1985 og 2000-2005

Udifferensierte og negative stereotypiske bilder har gjennom tidene preget vestlige fremstillinger av det afrikanske kontinentet i stor grad. Dessuten er det sjelden at representanter fra den afrikanske befolkningen får komme til orde med egne synspunkter og erfaringer. Hvordan oversettes den afrikanske virkeligheten av norske bistands- og misjonsaktører? Gjennom en kvantitativ innholdsanalyse og kvalitative næranalyser av et utvalg tekster fra to organisasjoner undersøker jeg deres verdensbilder og selvbilder. Jeg ser på definisjonsmakt, identitetsproduksjon og virkelighetsoversettelse, og oppgaven er inspirert av teoretiske perspektiver som fokuserer på representasjon, annengjøring, forholdet mellom tekst og kontekst, språk og makt. Det er vanlig å trekke et skille mellom oss og de andre, og det er gjerne dette skillet man fokuserer på i undersøkelser som mine. Selv om jeg avdekker et unyansert bilde av afrikanske forhold som ofte strekker seg langs dette skillet og en usynliggjøring av afrikanske perspektiver, finner jeg at skillet ikke alltid går mellom oss og de andre. Det finnes nemlig en tredje kategori, en mellomkategori, som jeg velger å kalle de andre oss. Disse er organisasjonenes lokale medarbeidere. Hvordan Norges Røde Kors og Norsk Luthersk Misjonssamband fremstiller Etiopia og Kenya på åttitallet og etter årtusenskiftet, er spørsmålet jeg forsøker å besvare
