Faecal haemoglobin can define risk of colorectal neoplasia at surveillance colonoscopy in patients at increased risk of colorectal cancer.
SSSPM J1444-2019: an extremely high proper motion, ultracool subdwarf
We present the discovery of a new extreme high proper motion object (3.5
arcsec/year) which we classify as an ultracool subdwarf with [M/H] = -0.5. It
has a formal spectral type of sdM9 but also shows L-type features: while the VO
bands are completely absent, it exhibits extremely strong TiO absorption in its
optical spectrum. With a radial velocity of about -160 km/s and a rough
distance estimate of 16--24 pc, it is likely one of the nearest halo members
crossing the Solar neighbourhood with a heliocentric space velocity of
(U,V,W)=(-244,-256,-100)+/-(32,77,6) km/s.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures (Fig.1a-d available as jpg files), accepted for

Neurological update: COVID-19
Abstract: Coronavirus Disease 2019 is predominantly a disorder of the respiratory system, but neurological complications have been recognised since early in the pandemic. The major pathophysiological processes leading to neurological damage in COVID-19 are cerebrovascular disease, immunologically mediated neurological disorders and the detrimental effects of critical illness on the nervous system. It is still unclear whether direct invasion of the nervous system by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 occurs; given the vast numbers of people infected at this point, this uncertainty suggests that nervous system infection is unlikely to represent a significant issue if it occurs at all. In this review, we explore what has been learnt about the neurological complications of COVID-19 over the course of the pandemic, and by which mechanisms these complications most commonly occur
Pressure dependence of the sound velocity in a 2D lattice of Hertz-Mindlin balls: a mean field description
We study the dependence on the external pressure of the velocities
of long wavelength sound waves in a confined 2D h.c.p. lattice of 3D
elastic frictional balls interacting via one-sided Hertz-Mindlin contact
forces, whose diameters exhibit mild dispersion. The presence of an underlying
long range order enables us to build an effective medium description which
incorporates the radial fluctuations of the contact forces acting on a single
site. Due to the non linearity of Hertz elasticity, self-consistency results in
a highly non-linear differential equation for the "equation of state" linking
the effective stiffness of the array with the applied pressure, from which
sound velocities are then obtained. The results are in excellent agreement with
existing experimental results and simulations in the high and intermediate
pressure regimes. It emerges from the analysis that the departure of
from the ideal Hertz behavior must be attributed primarily to the
fluctuations of the stress field, rather than to the pressure dependence of the
number of contacts
Granular Packings: Nonlinear elasticity, sound propagation and collective relaxation dynamics
Experiments on isotropic compression of a granular assembly of spheres show
that the shear and bulk moduli vary with the confining pressure faster than the
1/3 power law predicted by Hertz-Mindlin effective medium theories (EMT) of
contact elasticity. Moreover, the ratio between the moduli is found to be
larger than the prediction of the elastic theory by a constant value. The
understanding of these discrepancies has been a longstanding question in the
field of granular matter. Here we perform a test of the applicability of
elasticity theory to granular materials. We perform sound propagation
experiments, numerical simulations and theoretical studies to understand the
elastic response of a deforming granular assembly of soft spheres under
isotropic loading. Our results for the behavior of the elastic moduli of the
system agree very well with experiments. We show that the elasticity partially
describes the experimental and numerical results for a system under
compressional loads. However, it drastically fails for systems under shear
perturbations, particularly for packings without tangential forces and
friction. Our work indicates that a correct treatment should include not only
the purely elastic response but also collective relaxation mechanisms related
to structural disorder and nonaffine motion of grains.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figure
Faecal haemoglobin distributions by sex, age, deprivation and geographical region:consequences for colorectal cancer screening strategies
Faecal haemoglobin concentration in adenoma, before and after polypectomy, approaches the ideal tumour marker
BACKGROUND: Polypectomy may be performed at colonoscopy and then subsequent surveillance undertaken. It is thought that faecal haemoglobin concentration (f-Hb), estimated by quantitative faecal immunochemical tests (FIT), might be a useful tumour marker. METHODS: Consecutive patients enrolled in colonoscopy surveillance were approached at two hospitals. A specimen for FIT was provided before colonoscopy and, ideally after 3 weeks, a second FIT sample from those who had polypectomy. A single FIT system (OC-Sensor io, Eiken Chemical Co., Ltd) was used to generate f-Hb. RESULTS: 1103 Patients were invited; 643 returned a FIT device (uptake: 58.3%). Four patients had known inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and were excluded, leaving 639 (57.9%) with an age range of 25–90 years (median 64 years), 54.6% male. Of 593 patients who had a f-Hb result and completed colonoscopy, advanced neoplasia was found in 41 (6.9%); four colorectal cancer (CRC): 0.7% and 37 advanced adenoma (AA): 6.3%, and a further 127 (21.4%) had non-advanced adenoma (NAA). The median f-Hb was significantly greater in AA as compared to NAA; 6.0 versus 1.0 μg Hb/g faeces, p < 0.0001.134/164 (81.7%) of invited patients returned a second FIT device: 28 were patients with AA in whom median pre-polypectomy f-Hb was 19.2, falling to 3.5 μg Hb/g faeces post-polypectomy, p = 0.01, and 106 with NAA had median pre-polypectomy f-Hb 0.8 compared to 1.0 μg Hb/g faeces post-polypectomy, p = 0.96. CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative FIT could provide a good tumour marker in post-polypectomy surveillance, reduce colonoscopy requirements and minimise potential risk to patients
Evidence for the association of the DAOA (G72) gene with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder but not for the association of the DAO gene with schizophrenia
Background: Previous linkage and association studies have implicated the D-amino acid oxidase activator gene (DAOA)/G30 locus or neighbouring region of chromosome 13q33.2 in the genetic susceptibility to both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the D-amino acid oxidase (DAO) gene located at 12q24.11 have also been found to show allelic association with schizophrenia. Methods: We used the case control method to test for genetic association with variants at these loci in a sample of 431 patients with schizophrenia, 303 patients with bipolar disorder and 442 ancestrally matched supernormal controls all selected from the UK population. Results: Ten SNPs spanning the DAOA locus were genotyped in these samples. In addition three SNPs were genotyped at the DAO locus in the schizophrenia sample. Allelic association was detected between the marker rs3918342 (M23), 3' to the DAOA gene and both schizophrenia (chi(2) = 5.824 p = 0.016) and bipolar disorder (chi(2) = 4.293 p = 0.038). A trend towards association with schizophrenia was observed for two other DAOA markers rs3916967 (M14, chi(2) = 3.675 p = 0.055) and rs1421292 (M24; chi(2) = 3.499 p = 0.062). A test of association between a three marker haplotype comprising of the SNPs rs778293 (M22), rs3918342 (M23) and rs1421292 (M24) and schizophrenia gave a global empirical significance of p = 0.015. No evidence was found to confirm the association of genetic markers at the DAO gene with schizophrenia. Conclusion: Our results provide some support for a role for DAOA in susceptibility to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
