    Wage cuts and managers' empathy: How a positive emotion can contribute to positive organizational ethics in difficult times

    Using the lens of positive organizational ethics, we theorized that empathy affects decisions in ethical dilemmas that concern the well-being of not only the organization but also other stakeholders. We hypothesized and found that empathetic managers were less likely to comply with requests by an authority figure to cut the wages of their employees than were non-empathetic managers. However, when an authority figure requested to hold wages constant, empathy did not affect wage cut decisions. These findings imply that empathy can serve as a safeguard for ethical decision making in organizations during trying times without generally undermining organizational effectiveness. We conclude by discussing the implications of our research

    A model of gender prejudice, power, and discrimination: How hierarchy-enhancing factors predominate over hierarchy-attenuating factors

    Gender inequalities remain an issue in our society and particularly in the workplace. Several factors can explain this gender difference in top-level managerial positions such as career ambitions but also biases against women. In our chapter, we propose a model explaining why gender inequalities and particularly discrimination against women is still present in our societies despite social norms and existing legislation on gender equality. To this purpose, we review research on discrimination through two different approaches, (a) a prejudice approach through the justification-suppression model developed by Crandall and Eshleman (2003) and (b) a power approach through the social dominance theory (Pratto, Sidanius, Stallworth, & Malle, 1994; Sidanius & Pratto, 1999). In our work, we integrate these two approaches and propose a model of gender prejudice, power and discrimination. The integration of these two approaches contributes to a better understanding of how discrimination against women is formed and maintained over time

    Bound States in Sharply Bent Waveguides: Analytical and Experimental Approach

    Quantum wires and electromagnetic waveguides possess common features since their physics is described by the same wave equation. We exploit this analogy to investigate experimentally with microwave waveguides and theoretically with the help of an effective potential approach the occurrence of bound states in sharply bent quantum wires. In particular, we compute the bound states, study the features of the transition from a bound to an unbound state caused by the variation of the bending angle and determine the critical bending angles at which such a transition takes place. The predictions are confirmed by calculations based on a conventional numerical method as well as experimental measurements of the spectra and electric field intensity distributions of electromagnetic waveguides

    Experimental test of a trace formula for two-dimensional dielectric resonators

    Resonance spectra of two-dimensional dielectric microwave resonators of circular and square shapes have been measured. The deduced length spectra of periodic orbits were analyzed and a trace formula for dielectric resonators recently proposed by Bogomolny et al. [Phys. Rev. E 78, 056202 (2008)] was tested. The observed deviations between the experimental length spectra and the predictions of the trace formula are attributed to a large number of missing resonances in the measured spectra. We show that by taking into account the systematics of observed and missing resonances the experimental length spectra are fully understood.     Evidence for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

    The data of the Heidelberg-Moscow double beta decay experiment for the measuring period August 1990 - May 2000 (54.9813 kg y or 723.44 molyears), published recently, are analyzed using the potential of the Bayesian method for low counting rates. First evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay is observed giving first evidence for lepton number violation. The evidence for this decay mode is 97% (2.2\sigma) with the Bayesian method, and 99.8% c.l. (3.1\sigma) with the method recommended by the Particle Data Group. The half-life of the process is found with the Bayesian method to be T_{1/2}^{0\nu} = (0.8 - 18.3) x 10^{25} y (95% c.l.) with a best value of 1.5 x 10^{25} y. The deduced value of the effective neutrino mass is, with the nuclear matrix elements from [Sta90,Tom91] = (0.11 - 0.56) eV (95% c.l.), with a best value of 0.39 eV. Uncertainties in the nuclear matrix elements may widen the range given for the effective neutrino mass by at most a factor 2. Our observation which at the same time means evidence that the neutrino is a Majorana particle, will be of fundamental importance for neutrino physics.     Resighting of a Narwhal (Monodon monoceros) Instrumented with a Satellite Transmitter

    On 9 August 2001, a male narwhal (Monodon monoceros) was instrumented with a satellite transmitter attached to the dorsal side of the tusk in Creswell Bay on Somerset Island in the Canadian High Arctic. The whale was identified five years later, on 22 June 2006, in a photo of a group of narwhals taken from the ice edge in Lancaster Sound. Examination of the position of the transmitter on the tusk showed that the tusk had grown approximately 17 cm in the five-year period. The transmitter was still located on the dorsal side of the tusk and this fact, together with the length of spiral grains at the position of the tag, indicates that the tusk had not turned over (rotated) in the five-year period. The whale was photographed on its spring migration back to the original summer ground where it had been tagged. This resighting confirms evidence for site fidelity of narwhals, as the individual maintained the same migratory schedule and route observed for narwhals from previous satellite tracking studies in Creswell Bay.Le 9 août 2001, un émetteur satellite a été posé sur un narval mâle (Monodon monoceros), plus précisément du côté dorsal de sa défense et ce, dans la baie Creswell, à l’île Somerset, dans l’Extrême-Arctique canadien. Cinq ans plus tard, soit le 22 juin 2006, la baleine a été aperçue dans la photo d’un groupe de narvals prise à partir de la lisière de glaces du détroit de Lancaster. L’examen de l’emplacement de l’émetteur sur la défense a permis de constater que la défense avait grandi d’environ 17 cm pendant la période de cinq ans. L’émetteur se trouvait toujours du côté dorsal de la défense et cela, allié à la longueur des fibres torses à l’emplacement de l’étiquette, indique que la défense n’avait pas subi de rotation pendant la période de cinq ans. La baleine a été photographiée pendant sa migration printanière de retour vers l’endroit où elle avait d’abord été étiquetée l’été. Ce repérage permet de confirmer les preuves relativement à la fidélité des narvals à leurs emplacements, car cette baleine avait maintenu les mêmes horaire et trajet migratoires observés chez les narvals à partir d’autres études de repérage par satellite réalisées dans la baie Creswell

    Chaotic Scattering in the Regime of Weakly Overlapping Resonances

    We measure the transmission and reflection amplitudes of microwaves in a resonator coupled to two antennas at room temperature in the regime of weakly overlapping resonances and in a frequency range of 3 to 16 GHz. Below 10.1 GHz the resonator simulates a chaotic quantum system. The distribution of the elements of the scattering matrix S is not Gaussian. The Fourier coefficients of S are used for a best fit of the autocorrelation function if S to a theoretical expression based on random--matrix theory. We find very good agreement below but not above 10.1 GHz

    Third rank Killing tensors in general relativity. The (1+1)-dimensional case

    Third rank Killing tensors in (1+1)-dimensional geometries are investigated and classified. It is found that a necessary and sufficient condition for such a geometry to admit a third rank Killing tensor can always be formulated as a quadratic PDE, of order three or lower, in a Kahler type potential for the metric. This is in contrast to the case of first and second rank Killing tensors for which the integrability condition is a linear PDE. The motivation for studying higher rank Killing tensors in (1+1)-geometries, is the fact that exact solutions of the Einstein equations are often associated with a first or second rank Killing tensor symmetry in the geodesic flow formulation of the dynamics. This is in particular true for the many models of interest for which this formulation is (1+1)-dimensional, where just one additional constant of motion suffices for complete integrability. We show that new exact solutions can be found by classifying geometries admitting higher rank Killing tensors.Comment: 16 pages, LaTe
