Algebro-Geometric Solutions of the Boussinesq Hierarchy
We continue a recently developed systematic approach to the Bousinesq (Bsq)
hierarchy and its algebro-geometric solutions. Our formalism includes a
recursive construction of Lax pairs and establishes associated
Burchnall-Chaundy curves, Baker-Akhiezer functions and Dubrovin-type equations
for analogs of Dirichlet and Neumann divisors. The principal aim of this paper
is a detailed theta function representation of all algebro-geometric
quasi-periodic solutions and related quantities of the Bsq hierarchy.Comment: LaTeX, 48 page
Consistent Quantum Counterfactuals
An analysis using classical stochastic processes is used to construct a
consistent system of quantum counterfactual reasoning. When applied to a
counterfactual version of Hardy's paradox, it shows that the probabilistic
character of quantum reasoning together with the ``one framework'' rule
prevents a logical contradiction, and there is no evidence for any mysterious
nonlocal influences. Counterfactual reasoning can support a realistic
interpretation of standard quantum theory (measurements reveal what is actually
there) under appropriate circumstances.Comment: Minor modifications to make it agree with published version. Latex 8

C-myc amplification in breast cancer: a meta-analysis of its occurrence and prognostic relevance
Data from basic research suggests that amplification of the proto-oncogene c-myc is important in breast cancer pathogenesis, but its frequency of amplification and prognostic relevance in human studies have been inconsistent. In an effort to clarify the clinical significance of c-myc amplification in breast cancer, we conducted a comprehensive literature search and a meta-analysis in which 29 studies were evaluated. The weighted average frequency of c-myc amplification in breast tumours was 15.7% (95% CI = 12.5–18.8%), although estimates in individual studies exhibited significant heterogeneity, P< 0.0001. C-myc amplification exhibited significant but weak associations with tumour grade (RR = 1.61), lymph-node metastasis (RR = 1.24), negative progesterone receptor status (RR = 1.27), and postmenopausal status (RR = 0.82). Amplification was significantly associated with risk of relapse and death, with pooled estimates RR = 2.05 (95% CI = 1.51–2.78) and RR = 1.74 (95% CI = 1.27–2.39), respectively. This effect did not appear to be merely a surrogate for other prognostic factors. These results suggest that c-myc amplification is relatively common in breast cancer and may provide independent prognostic information. More rigorous studies with consistent methodology are required to validate this association, and to investigate its potential as a molecular predictor of specific therapy response. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co
Feasibility Study of a Rotorcraft Health and Usage Monitoring System ( HUMS): Usage and Structural Life Monitoring Evaluation
The objective of this study was to evaluate two techniques, Flight Condition Recognition (FCR) and Flight Load Synthesis (FLS), for usage monitoring and assess the potential benefits of extending the retirement intervals of life-limited components, thus reducing the operator's maintenance and replacement costs. Both techniques involve indirect determination of loads using measured flight parameters and subsequent fatigue analysis to calculate the life expended on the life-limited components. To assess the potential benefit of usage monitoring, the two usage techniques were compared to current methods of component retirement. In addition, comparisons were made with direct load measurements to assess the accuracy of the two techniques. The data that was used for the evaluation of the usage monitoring techniques was collected under an independent HUMS Flight trial program, using a commercially available HUMS and data recording system. The usage data collect from the HUMS trial aircraft was analyzed off-line using PC-based software that included the FCR and FLS techniques. In the future, if the technique prove feasible, usage monitoring would be incorporated into the onboard HUMS
Jump-like unravelings for non-Markovian open quantum systems
Non-Markovian evolution of an open quantum system can be `unraveled' into
pure state trajectories generated by a non-Markovian stochastic (diffusive)
Schr\"odinger equation, as introduced by Di\'osi, Gisin, and Strunz. Recently
we have shown that such equations can be derived using the modal (hidden
variable) interpretation of quantum mechanics. In this paper we generalize this
theory to treat jump-like unravelings. To illustrate the jump-like behavior we
consider a simple system: A classically driven (at Rabi frequency )
two-level atom coupled linearly to a three mode optical bath, with a central
frequency equal to the frequency of the atom, , and the two side
bands have frequencies . In the large limit we
observed that the jump-like behavior is similar to that observed in this system
with a Markovian (broad band) bath. This is expected as in the Markovian limit
the fluorescence spectrum for a strongly driven two level atom takes the form
of a Mollow triplet. However the length of time for which the Markovian-like
behaviour persists depends upon {\em which} jump-like unraveling is used.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Evaluation of the Wood and Plastic Formworks in Building Construction Industry for Sustainable Development
This research work assessed wood and plastic in building construction. The study was a descriptive survey design and as such made use of questionnaire with 42 items. The Population of the study was 110 respondents which include 40 building professional and 70 non-building professional. The data were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The finding of the study shows that plastic work form can be used for casting slab, concrete wall among others. The finding also revealed some factors that determines the selection of form work such as climatic condition, labour efficiency and that plastic formwork saves cost as a result of long reuse period. It is therefore recommended that; plastic and wooden formwork should be integrated often in the casting of slabs, beam and columns without discrimination, proper adherence to standards and specifications for use of any type of formwork, there should be large scale production of plastic formwork to conserve forest and wood, factors to be considered in the selection of formwork should not be ignored, there should be proper weighing of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of formwork relating to the scale of construction before the choice of any formwork
Report on an all-sky LIGO search for periodic gravitational waves in the S4 data
We report on an all-sky search with the LIGO detectors for periodic
gravitational waves in the frequency range 50-1000 Hz and having a negative
frequency time derivative with magnitude between zero and Hz/s. Data
from the fourth LIGO science run have been used in this search. Three different
semi-coherent methods of summing strain power were applied. Observing no
evidence for periodic gravitational radiation, we report upper limits on strain
amplitude and interpret these limits to constrain radiation from rotating
neutron stars.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, presented at Amaldi7, Sydney (July 2007
Searching for stochastic gravitational-wave background with the co-located LIGO interferometers
This paper presents techniques developed by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration
to search for the stochastic gravitational-wave background using the co-located
pair of LIGO interferometers at Hanford, WA. We use correlations between
interferometers and environment monitoring instruments, as well as time-shifts
between two interferometers (described here for the first time) to identify
correlated noise from non-gravitational sources. We veto particularly noisy
frequency bands and assess the level of residual non-gravitational coupling
that exists in the surviving data.Comment: Proceedings paper from the 7th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on
