The impact of common APSE interface set specifications on space station information systems

    Get PDF
Certain types of software facilities are needed in a Space Station Information Systems Environment; the Common APSE (Ada Program Support Environment) Interface Set (CAIS) was proposed as a means of satisfying them. The reasonableness of this is discussed by examining the current CAIS, considering the changes due to the latest Requirements and Criteria (RAC) document, and postulating the effects on the CAIS 2.0. Finally, a few additional comments are made on the problems inherent in the Ada language itself, especially on its deficiencies when used for implementing large distributed processing and data base applications

Study of the apsidal precession of the Physical Symmetrical Pendulum

We study the apsidal precession of a Physical Symmetrical Pendulum (Allais' precession) as a generalization of the precession corresponding to the Ideal Spherical Pendulum (Airy's Precession). Based on the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism and using the technics of variation of parameters along with the averaging method, we obtain approximate solutions, in terms of which the motion of both systems admits a simple geometrical description. The method developed in this paper is considerably simpler than the standard one in terms of elliptical functions and the numerical agreement with the exact solutions is excellent. In addition, the present procedure permits to show clearly the origin of the Airy's and Allais' precession, as well as the effect of the spin of the Physical Pendulum on the Allais' precession. Further, the method can be extended to the study of the asymmetrical pendulum in which an exact solution is not possible anymore.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, LaTeX2

Cyberinfrastructure: Supporting Scientific Discovery and Innovation in the 21st Century

    Get PDF
The recently coined term cyberinfrastructure describes the global information technology environments in which capabilities of the highest level of computing tools would be available to researchers in an interoperable network. It refers to what is required for a knowledge economy in the information age. Join Dr. Diaz-Herrera as he discusses the fundamental elements and complexities of Cyberinfrastructure, both from a computing point of view and the enduser’s. He will present several examples from various domains

Interfacial tension behavior of binary and ternary mixtures of partially miscible Lennard-Jones fluids: a molecular dynamics simulation

By means of extensive equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations we have investigated, the behavior of the interfacial tension γ\gamma of two immiscible symmetrical Lennard-Jones fluids. This quantity is studied as function of reduced temperature T∗=kBTϵT^{*}={{k_{_B} T}\over \epsilon} in the range 0.6≤T∗≤3.00.6 \leq T^{*} \leq 3.0. We find that, unlike the monotonic decay obtained for the liquid-vapor interfacial tension, for the liquid-liquid interface, γ(T)\gamma (T) has a maximum at a specific temperature. We also investigate the effect that surfactant-like particles has on the thermodynamic as well as the structural properties of the liquid-liquid interface. It is found that γ\gamma decays monotonically as the concentration of the surfactant-like particles increases.Comment: LaTeX-Revtex file with 7 encapsulated postscript figures.
