Fossil-fuels, bio-fuels and food: Raking priorities

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the question of the trade-offs between bio-fuels, fossil-fuels, and food. To do so an analysis is conducted taking into consideration the differences in relative prices and in the productive structure among the countries. The results shows that in general food puts a greater stress over the economies than energy does, and mainly in the developing economies. As a consequence of that, the possibilities for the growing use of bio-fuels is limited and restrict to countries where it is possible to have an expansion of bio-fuel production without compromising the production of food and without putting more stress over the environment. This, by its turn, restricts the possibilities for a world policy of bio-fuels with the consequence that bilateral agreements would be the dominant ones.Fossil-Fuels; Bio-Fuels; Food; Productive Structure; Input-Output

Motivations for visiting sacred sites: the case of Senhora da Lapa Schrine

    Get PDF
Religious tourism in Portugal is extremely rich and integrates a variety of religious festivities, sacred heritage, Jewish legacy, organized and well known routes and famous religious shrines throughout the country. The Nossa Senhora da Lapa Shrine can be distinguished, since it is one of the oldest sacred sites in Europe. According to Raj and Griffin (2015) in the current literature there is relatively limited research exploring the understanding and motivation of religious tourists’ patterns of visitation to sacred sites. Thus, the current study intends to identify what motivates people to visit sacred sites and why visitors choose to visit the Lapa Shrine. For this purpose, a questionnaire was developed and applied to the visitors of the Lapa Shrine. A total of 250 responses were obtained. The results reveal that the most important factors when visiting a Shrine are the existent monuments, cleanliness, the existence of museums and exhibition rooms and the religious festivities that occur there

Comparing BilevelJuMP.jl Formulations: Support Vector Regression Hyperparameter Tuning

In this technical report, we compare multiple reformulation techniques and solvers that can be used with the Julia package BilevelJuMP. We focus on the special case of Hyperparameter Tuning for Support Vector Regression. We describe a bilevel model for the problem in question. Then we present code for generating data and models that solve the problem. Finally, we present results and a brief analysis.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2205.0230

NSM shear strengthening technique with CFRP laminates applied in high T cross section RC beams

The effectiveness of the Near Surface Mounted (NSM) technique with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates for the shear strengthening of relatively high T cross section (h = 600 mm) Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams was assessed by experimental research. Two inclinations of the laminates were tested (52° and 90°) and, for each one, two percentages of CFRP were adopted. The RC beams shear strengthened with NSM laminates had a percentage of steel stirrups of 0.09%. The experimental results showed that NSM shear strengthening technique with CFRP laminates is very effective in RC beams of relatively high cross section height, not only in terms of increasing the load carrying capacity of the beams, but also in assuring higher mobilization of the tensile capacity of the CFRP. Furthermore, inclined laminates were more effective than vertical laminates and the shear capacity of the beams increased with the percentage of laminates. Taking into account available experimental results obtained with the same test setup, but using RC beams of lower depth of T cross section (h = 400 mm), it can be concluded that the effectiveness of the NSM technique with CFRP laminates increase with the increase of the depth of the cross section. The formulations provided by Nanni et al. (2004) and Dias and Barros (2013) for the NSM shear strengthening technique predicted a CFRP contribution around 51% and 67%, respectively, of the experimentally registered values. The authors acknowledge the financial support provided by QREN (through the Operational Program COMPETE) in the scope of the CutInov Project (n. 38780) involving the Clever Reinforcement Company and the Structural Composites Research group of ISISE-Minho University. Influência da percentagem e orientação de laminados de CFRP no reforço ao corte de vigas de betão armado

    Get PDF

NSM CFRP laminates for the shear strengthening of high strength concrete beams

    Get PDF
The effectiveness of the Near Surface Mounted (NSM) shear strengthening technique with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates applied in relatively high-strength concrete beams was assessed by experimental research. Six NSM shear strengthening configurations (three CFRP orientations and two levels of CFRP percentage) were applied in T cross section Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams with a steel stirrups percentage of 0.10% (ρsw = 0.10%). Four of these NSM configurations were also applied in beams with ρsw = 0.16%. The concrete of the beams had a compressive strength of 59.4 MPa at the age of beam tests. The main results of this experimental research are presented and analyzed in terms of the structural behaviour of the beams, failure modes and performance of the NSM technique with CFRP laminates. The results showed that NSM shear strengthening technique with CFRP laminates has a high performance in RC beams with high-strength concrete, not only in terms of increasing the load carrying capacity of the beams but also in mobilizing more effectively the tensile properties of the CFRP
