    Greywater recycling: Treatment options and applications

    Wastewater is an immense resource that could find significant applications in regions of water scarcity. Greywater has particular advantages in that it is a large source with a low organic content. Through critical analysis of data from existing greywater recycling applications, this paper presents a review of existing technologies and applications by collating a disparate information base and comparing/contrasting the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. Simple technologies and sand filters have been shown to have a limited effect on greywater; membranes are reported to provide good solids removal but cannot efficiently tackle the organic fraction. Alternatively, biological and extensive schemes achieve a good general treatment of greywater with particularly effective removal of organics. The best overall performances were observed within schemes that combine different types of methods to ensure effective treatment of all the fractions

    Impact of aerobic exercise capacity and procedure-related factors in lung cancer surgery

    Over the past decades, major progress in patient selection, surgical techniques and anaesthetic management have largely contributed to improved outcome in lung cancer surgery. The purpose of this study was to identify predictors of post-operative cardiopulmonary morbidity in patients with a forced expiratory volume in 1 s 17 mL·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹, those with a peak V'(O₂) <10 mL·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹ had a four-fold higher incidence of cardiac and pulmonary morbidity. Our data support the use of pre-operative CPET and the application of an intra-operative protective ventilation strategy. Further studies should evaluate whether pre-operative physical training can improve post-operative outcome

    A validation of the 7.5% CO2 model of GAD using paroxetine and lorazepam in healthy volunteers

    The inhalation of 7.5% carbon dioxide (CO2) in healthy subjects produces an increase in blood pressure and heart rate, and increased feelings of anxiety, fear and tension (Bailey et al. 2005). As this state is similar to that of general anxiety rather than panic, we further validated this by examining the effects of anxiolytic medication. Two separate studies in healthy volunteers are described; study one is a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of a single dose of 2mg lorazepam and study two describes the effects of 21 days of treatment with paroxetine. Gas challenges were air and 7.5% CO2 inhaled for 20 minutes, delivered on day 0 (before treatment) and day 21 (after treatment) in the paroxetine study. Subjective effects were measured using visual analogue scales and questionnaires. When compared with placebo, lorazepam 2mg significantly reduced peak CO2-induced subjective fear, feelings of wanting to leave, tension and worry. In the paroxetine study, when compared with day 0, day 21 showed a significantly attenuated peak CO2-induced nervousness and a trend for reduced ratings of anxiety, fear, feel like leaving, tense and worried. In these studies we have shown that this CO 2 model of anxiety is sensitive to lorazepam and to a lesser extent paroxetine. This gives support to its utility as an experimental model of general anxiety disorder in healthy volunteers. © 2007 British Association for Psychopharmacology
