The chapter will focus on the different aspects of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). An update in noninvasive MR-based imaging will be offered in detail, pointing mainly to fat, iron, and fibrosis deposition and the accuracy of quantitative methods in disease grading and severity assessment. NAFLD is the most common cause of chronic liver disease (CLD) in Western countries. MRI is used to evaluate the disease, to assess the severity, and to quantify the amount of fat deposition, being also the method of choice to evaluate and quantify iron overload. Diagnosis and staging of liver fibrosis is one of the most challenging aspects of noninvasive imaging. “Virtual biopsy” refers to the possibility of imaging techniques to depict, map, and measure fibrosis minimizing the need for invasive liver biopsies in CLD. MRI allows an accurate determination of steatosis, iron overload, and fibrosis, even if they coexist

In the field of education is associated with reading comprehension with the achievement of a varied range of learning in all areas of knowledge, this process is mediated by conceptual elements that are revealed at the time of facing the reading of any textual typology. Thus, the lack of adequate understanding and interpretation will limit a student's access to the basic knowledge offered by the school. The research proposal presented below, sought to contribute to the improvement of the inferential reading process of fourth grade students; since starting from the review of their low academic performance observed, both in the internal examinations and in the data taken from the standardized tests, there are difficulties in the reading comprehension processes. Therefore, this project focused on the design and application of a didactic sequence based on the use of comics to strengthen this component, taking into account the four types of inferential reading

The purpose of this paper was to determine the total protein content, gluten content, moisture, Zeleny sedimentation index, hectolitre mass and deformation index of T. aestivum wheat. The total protein content, gluten content, Zeleny sedimentation index and hectolitre mass was analyzed by the NIR, Infralum FT 10 cereal analyzer instruments. Humidity was determined by oven drying method and deformation index by thermostating. The samples were collected from three Romanian areas: West, South and Central. The highest total protein content was registered in wheat from South (13.5%), followed by wheat from West (13.2%), respectively from Centre (10.6%). The gluten content, in direct correlation with total protein content, was in the range 24% (wheat from Centre) - 30% (wheat from South). The deformation index of West and South samples was 5 mm, respectively 2mm of sample from Central. Wheat South Zeleny sedimentation index was 44 mL followed by West area wheat (49 mL) and wheat from Central (51 mL). The wheat samples hectolitre mass was very close, between 80.5-81.0 kg/hL. The humidity of the samples varied from 11.9% to 12.7%. The results recommend the wheat from South Romania area as being of high quality, followed by wheat from West Romania area. The wheat from Centre Romania area is of medium quality

Sex Difference and Benzene Exposure: Does It Matter?

    Get PDF
Sex-related biological differences might lead to different effects in women and men when they are exposed to risk factors. A scoping review was carried out to understand if sex could be a discriminant in health outcomes due to benzene. Studies on both animals and humans were collected. In vivo surveys, focusing on genotoxicity, hematotoxicity and effects on metabolism suggested a higher involvement of male animals (mice or rats) in adverse health effects. Conversely, the studies on humans, focused on the alteration of blood parameters, myeloid leukemia incidence and biomarker rates, highlighted that, overall, women had significantly higher risk for blood system effects and a metabolization of benzene 23-26% higher than men, considering a similar exposure situation. This opposite trend highlights that the extrapolation of in vivo findings to human risk assessment should be taken with caution. However, it is clear that sex is a physiological parameter to consider in benzene exposure and its health effects. The topic of sex difference linked to benzene in human exposure needs further research, with more numerous samples, to obtain a higher strength of data and more indicative findings. Sex factor, and gender, could have significant impacts on occupational exposures and their health effects, even if there are still uncertainties and gaps that need to be filled
