Cardiac oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines response after myocardial infarction

Oxidative stress in heart failure or during ischemia/reperfusion occurs as a result of the excessive generation or accumulation of free radicals or their oxidation products. Free radicals formed during oxidative stress can initiate lipid peroxidation, oxidize proteins to inactive states and cause DNA strand breaks. Oxidative stress is a condition in which oxidant metabolites exert toxic effects because of their increased production or an altered cellular mechanism of protection. In the early phase of acute heart ischemia cytokines have the feature to be functional pleiotropy and redundancy, moreover, several cytokines exert similar and overlapping actions on the same cell type and one cytokine shows a wide range of biological effects on various cell types. Activation of cytokine cascades in the infarcted myocardium was established in numerous studies. In experimental models of myocardial infarction, induction and release of the pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-&alpha (Tumor Necrosis Factor &alpha), IL-1&beta (Interleukin- 1&beta) and IL-6 (Interleukin-6) and chemokines are steadily described. The current review examines the role of oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines response following acute myocardial infarction and explores the inflammatory mechanisms of cardiac injur

Objectives. Short implants are increasing their popularity among clinicians who want to fulfill the constant demanding of fixed prosthetic solutions in edentulous jaws. The aim of this report was to propose a new possibility to project and realize an occlusal guided implant cross-arch prosthesis supported by ultra-short implants, describing it presented an edentulous mandible case report. Methods. A 61-year-old, Caucasian, female patient who attended the dental clinic of the University of L’Aquila presented with edentulous posterior inferior jaw and periodontitis and periimplantitis processes in the anterior mandible. The remaining tooth and the affected implant were removed. Six 4-mm-long implants were placed to support a cross-arch metal-resin prosthesis. Results. At 1-year follow-up clinical and radiological assessment showed a good osseointegration of the fixtures and the patient was satisfied with the prosthesis solution. Conclusion. The method, even if it requires further validation, seems to be a valid aid in solving lower edentulous clinical cases, and appears less complex and with more indications of other proposals presented in the current clinical literature. Our case report differs from the current technique All-on-Four, which uses four implants in the mandible to support overdenture prosthesis, assuring a very promising clinical resul

Feynman graphs and the large dimensional limit of multipartite entanglement

We are interested in the properties of multipartite entanglement of a system composed by nn dd-level parties (qudits). Focussing our attention on pure states we want to tackle the problem of the maximization of the entanglement for such systems. In particular we effort the problem trying to minimize the purity of the system. It has been shown that not for all systems this function can reach its lower bound, however it can be proved that for all values of nn a dd can always be found such that the lower bound can be reached. In this paper we examine the high-temperature expansion of the distribution function of the bipartite purity over all balanced bipartition considering its optimization problem as a problem of statistical mechanics. In particular we prove that the series characterizing the expansion converges and we analyze the behavior of each term of the series as dd\to \infty.Comment: 29 pages, 11 figure

Non-linear unbalanced Bessel beams: Stationary conical waves supported by nonlinear losses

Nonlinear losses accompanying Kerr self-focusing substantially impacts the dynamic balance of diffraction and nonlinearity, permitting the existence of localized and stationary solutions of the 2D+1 nonlinear Schrodinger equation which are stable against radial collapse. These are featured by linear conical tails that continually refill the nonlinear, central spot. An experiment shows that the discovered solution behaves as strong attractor for the self-focusing dynamics in Kerr media.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; experimental verification adde

MiLE (Milano – Lugano Evaluation Method) is an innovative method for evaluating the quality and usability of hypermedia applications. This paper focuses upon the specific “module” of MiLE concerning cultural heritage applications, synthesizing the results of research carried on by a group of seven museum experts of Bologna (Italy), with the joint coordination of IBC (Institute for the Cultural Heritage of the Emilia Romagna Region) and Politecnico di Milano. The “Bologna group” is composed of different professional figures working in the museum domain: museum curators of artistic, archaeological and historical heritage; museum communication experts; Web sites of cultural institutions’ communication experts. After illustrating the general features of MiLE and the specific features for Cultural Heritage, we will briefly show a few of the results which are to be published in the “Bologna Report”

UVES observations of QSO 0000-2620: oxygen and zinc abundances in the Damped Ly-alpha galaxy at z_abs=3.3901

Observations of the QSO 0000-2620 with UVES spectrograph at the 8.2m ESO KUEYEN telescope are used for abundance analysis of the damped Ly-alpha system at z_{abs}=3.3901. Several Oxygen lines are identified in the Ly_alpha forest and a measure for the oxygen abundance is obtained at [O/H]=-1.85 +/- 0.1 by means of the unsaturated OI 925 A and OI 950 A lines. This represents the most accurate O measurement in a damped Ly_alpha galaxy so far. We have also detected ZnII 2026 A and CrII 2056, 2062 A redshifted at about 8900 A and found abundances [Zn/H] = -2.07 +/- 0.1 and [Cr/H]=-1.99 +/- 0.1. Furthermore, previous measurements of Fe, Si, Ni and N have been refined yielding [Fe/H]=-2.04 +/- 0.1, [Si/H]=-1.90 +/- 0.1, [Ni/H]=-2.27 +/- 0.1, and [N/H]=-2.68 +/- 0.1. The abundance of the non-refractory element zinc is the lowest among the damped Ly-alpha systems showing that the associated intervening galaxy is indeed in the early stages of its chemical evolution. The fact that the Zn abundance is identical to that of the refractory elements Fe and Cr suggests that dust grains have not formed yet. In this Damped Ly-alpha system the observed [O,S,Si/Zn,Fe,Cr] ratios, in whatever combination are taken, are close to solar (i.e 0.1-0.2 dex) and do not show the [alpha-element/Fe] enhancement observed in Milky Way stars of comparable metallicity. The observed behavior supports a galaxy evolution model characterized by either episodic or low star formation rate rather than a Milky-Way-type evolutionary model.Comment: Accepted by Ap

Role of post mortem CT (PMCT) in high energy traumatic deaths

Background. Post Mortem Computed Tomography (PMCT) is being increasingly implemented in forensic field and could be an adjuvant to classic autopsies. In this study we evaluated the feasibility of complementation of conventional autopsy in trauma victims with PMCT. Materials and methods. A total of 21 subjects, who had sustained various types of blunt high-energy trauma, were selected from the casuistry of the Section of Legal Medicine at University of Pisa: before autopsy, a PMCT examination (Toshiba Aquilion 16 CT scanner) was performed, and after the acquisition of the raw images, MPR and VR reconstructions were performed with dedicated software. Results. PMCT is more sensitive than conventional autopsy in detecting skeletal injuries, whilst autopsy constitutes the method of choice for the detection of thoracic and abdominal visceral injuries. Conclusion. PMCT should be considered a useful tool in addition to conventional autopsy in evaluating trauma victims: it detects further bone fractures in body parts difficult to investigate during autopsy (i.e. posterior regions), facilitating the pathologist in the reconstruction of events and in determining the cause of death

Acute myocardial infarction following off label retrobulbar injection of desmopressin for non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Causal correlation or coincidence?

A 60-year-old man, apparently healthy with negative history for cardiovascular diseases, was hospitalized because of an unilateral sudden and painless severe visual loss. Diagnosis of NAION was made. Two separate and immediately consecutive injections of betamethasone (2 mg/0.5 mL) and desmopressin (2 mcg/0.5 mL) were performed in the retrobulbar space. Fifteen minutes later, the patient suddenly developed cold sweat, dyspnoea, thoracic pain and severe hypotension. Acute myocardial infarction was diagnosed by ECG. Desmopressin was the probable causative agent. Thrombotic events following intravenous or oral administration of desmopressin have been documented in the medical literature. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case in which a thrombotic event was associated with the retrobulbar route. Retrobulbar desmopressin administration in patients with NAION can be probably associated with AMI. Considering its invasiveness and the unproven benefit in the treatment of NAION, this therapeutic approach can not be currently recommende

Gauge/Gravity Correspondence from Open/Closed String Duality

We compute the annulus diagram corresponding to the interaction of a fractional D3 brane with a gauge field on its world-volume and a stack of N fractional D3 branes on the orbifolds C^2 /Z_2 and C^3/Z_2 x Z_2. We show that its logarithmic divergence can be equivalently understood as due either to massless open string states circulating in the loop or to massless closed string states exchanged between two boundary states. This follows from the fact that, under open/closed string duality, massless states in the open and closed string channels are matched into each other without mixing with massive states. This explains why the perturbative properties of many gauge theories living on the worldvolume of less supersymmetric and nonconformal branes have been recently obtained from their corresponding supergravity solution.Comment: LaTeX, 28 page
