Evidence for T Tauri-like emission in the EXor V1118 Ori from near-IR and X-ray data
We present a near-IR study of the EXor variable V1118 Ori, performed by
following a slightly declining phase after a recent outburst. In particular,
the near-IR (0.8 - 2.3 micron) spectrum, obtained for the first time, shows a
large variety of emission features of the HI and HeI recombination and CO
overtone. By comparing the observed spectrum with a wind model, a mass loss
rate value is derived along with other parameters whose values are typical of
an accreting T Tauri star. In addition, we have used X-ray data from the XMM
archive, taken in two different epochs during the declining phase monitored in
IR. X-ray emission (in the range 0.5 - 10 keV) permits to derive several
parameters which confirm the T Tauri nature of the source. In the near-IR the
object maintains a low visual extinction during all the activity phases,
confirming that variable extinction does not contribute to brightness
variations. The lack of both a significant amount of circumstellar material and
any evidence of IR cooling from collimated jet/outflow driven by the source,
indicates that, at least this member of the EXor class, is in a late stage of
the Pre-Main Sequence evolution. In the X-ray regime, an evident fading is
present, detected in the post-outburst phase, that cannot be reconciled with
the presence of any absorbing material. This circumstance, combined with the
persistence (in the pre- and post-outburst phases) of a temperature component
at about 10 MK, suggests that accretion has some influence in regulating the
coronal activity
Aqueye+: a new ultrafast single photon counter for optical high time resolution astrophysics
Aqueye+ is a new ultrafast optical single photon counter, based on single
photon avalanche photodiodes (SPAD) and a 4-fold split-pupil concept. It is a
completely revisited version of its predecessor, Aqueye, successfully mounted
at the 182 cm Copernicus telescope in Asiago. Here we will present the new
technological features implemented on Aqueye+, namely a state of the art timing
system, a dedicated and optimized optical train, a high sensitivity and high
frame rate field camera and remote control, which will give Aqueye plus much
superior performances with respect to its predecessor, unparalleled by any
other existing fast photometer. The instrument will host also an optical
vorticity module to achieve high performance astronomical coronography and a
real time acquisition of atmospheric seeing unit. The present paper describes

The discovery of the optical/IR counterpart of the 12s transient X-ray pulsar GS 0834-43
We report the discovery of the optical/infra-red counterpart of the 12.3s
transient X-ray pulsar GS0834-43. We re-analysed archival ROSAT PSPC
observations of GS0834-43, obtaining two new refined positions, about 14" and
18" away from the previously published one, and a new spin period measurement.
Within the new error circles we found a relatively faint (V=20.1) early type
reddened star (V-R=2.24). The optical spectrum shows a strong Halpha emission
line. The IR observations of the field confirm the presence of an IR excess for
the Halpha-emitting star (K'=11.4, J-K'=1.94) which is likely surrounded by a
conspicuous circumstellar envelope. Spectroscopic and photometric data indicate
a B0-2 V-IIIe spectral-type star located at a distance of 3-5kpc and confirm
the Be-star/X-ray binary nature of GS0834-43.Comment: 6 pages. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Nod2 Deficiency in mice is Associated with Microbiota Variation Favouring the Expansion of mucosal CD4+ LAP+ Regulatory Cells
Nucleotide-binding Oligomerization Domain-2 (NOD2) mutations are associated with an increased risk to develop Crohn's Disease. In previous studies, we have shown that Nod2-/- mice manifest increased proportion of Lamina Propria (LP) CD4+ LAP+ Foxp3- regulatory cells, when compared with Nod2+/+ mice, while CD4+ Foxp3 + regulatory cells were not affected. Here, we investigated the Nod2 gut microbiota, by 16S rRNA pyrosequencing, at steady state and after TNBS-colitis induction in mice reared separately or in cohousing, correlating the microbial profiles with LP regulatory T cells proportion and tissue cytokines content. We found that enrichment of Rikenella and Alistipes (Rikenellaceae) in Nod2-/- mice at 8 weeks of age reared separately was associated with increased proportion of CD4+ LAP+ Foxp3- cells and less severe TNBS-colitis. In co-housed mice the acquisition of Rickenellaceae by Nod2+/+ mice was associated with increased CD4+ LAP+ Foxp3- proportion and less severe colitis. Severe colitis was associated with enrichment of gram-negative pathobionts (Escherichia and Enterococcus), while less severe colitis with protective bacteria (Barnesiella, Odoribacter and Clostridium IV). Environmental factors acting on genetic background with different outcomes according to their impact on microbiota, predispose in different ways to inflammation. These results open a new scenario for therapeutic attempt to re-establish eubiosis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients with NOD2 polymorphisms
Aqueye optical observations of the Crab Nebula pulsar
We observed the Crab pulsar in October 2008 at the Copernico Telescope in
Asiago - Cima Ekar with the optical photon counter Aqueye (the Asiago Quantum
Eye) which has the best temporal resolution and accuracy ever achieved in the
optical domain (hundreds of picoseconds). Our goal was to perform a detailed
analysis of the optical period and phase drift of the main peak of the Crab
pulsar and compare it with the Jodrell Bank ephemerides. We determined the
position of the main peak using the steepest zero of the cross-correlation
function between the pulsar signal and an accurate optical template. The pulsar
rotational period and period derivative have been measured with great accuracy
using observations covering only a 2 day time interval. The error on the period
is 1.7 ps, limited only by the statistical uncertainty. Both the rotational
frequency and its first derivative are in agreement with those from the Jodrell
Bank radio ephemerides archive. We also found evidence of the optical peak
leading the radio one by ~230 microseconds. The distribution of phase-residuals
of the whole dataset is slightly wider than that of a synthetic signal
generated as a sequence of pulses distributed in time with the probability
proportional to the pulse shape, such as the average count rate and background
level are those of the Crab pulsar observed with Aqueye. The counting
statistics and quality of the data allowed us to determine the pulsar period
and period derivative with great accuracy in 2 days only. The time of arrival
of the optical peak of the Crab pulsar leads the radio one in agreement with
what recently reported in the literature. The distribution of the phase
residuals can be approximated with a Gaussian and is consistent with being

Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction in Gas-Solid Regime in the Presence of Bare, SiO2 Supported or Cu-Loaded TiO2 Samples
Both commercial and home prepared (HP) TiO2 samples have been tested for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2. (HP) TiO2
powders were prepared by using TiCl4 or Ti(OC4H9)4 as the precursors to obtain HP1 and HP2 samples, respectively. Also HP Cu-loaded
and SiO2 supported TiO2 powders were prepared. The HP samples were more active than the commercial ones for the photoreduction of
CO2 with and without water vapour. HP1 produced mainly formaldehyde, HP2 principally methane. Acetaldehyde was found to be the
primary product obtained when HP1 was supported on SiO2. The addition of Cu increased the photocatalytic reactivity either of bulk and
SiO2-supported HP1. In particular, 1 wt % of Cu improved the formaldehyde yield obtained with the bare HP1 by one order of magnitude.
Differently, the presence of Cu or SiO2 in the HP2 samples markedly reduced the production of methane
Effects of parietal lesions in humans on color and location priming
To determine whether the parietal lobes contribute to the selection of nonspatial features known to be processed in the ventral stream, the current study examined the effect of chronic unilateral parietal lobe lesions in humans on color and location priming. Patients and normal controls performed a go/no-go color discrimination task in which either the same color and different color pairs of stimuli (prime and probe) were projected sequentially either in the same hemifield or in opposite hemifields. Control subjects and patients both showed independent effects of color and location priming. In the patients, primes in either field produced color priming for target probes in the ipsilesional field but not for probes in the contralesional field. This observation implicates the parietal cortex in processing activated codes of stimulus attributes not only for spatial information but also for visual features processed in the ventral visual pathways
Major-ion bulk deposition around an active volcano (Mt. Etna, Italy)
Bulk atmospheric deposition of major cations
(Na, K, Ca, Mg) and anions (Cl, F, SO4) were measured
at 15 sites around an active volcano, Mount Etna, from
2001 to 2003. Their composition indicates several natural
sources, among which deposition of plume-derived volcanogenic
gas compounds is prevalent for F, Cl and S.
Plume-derived acidic compounds are also responsible for
the prevailing acidic composition of the samples collected
on the summit of the volcano (pH in the 2.45–5.57 range).
Cation species have complex origin, including deposition
of plume volcanogenic ash and aerosols and soil-dust wind
re-suspension of either volcanic or carbonate sedimentary
rocks.
Variation of the deposition rates during the March 2001–
March 2003 period, coupled with previous measurements
from 1997 to 2000 (Appl Geochem 16:985–1000, 2001),
were compared with the variation of SO2 flux, volcanic
activity and rainfall. The deposition rate was mainly controlled
by rainfall. Commonly, about 0.1–0.9% of HF,
HCl and SO2 emitted by the summit crater’s plume were
deposited around the volcano. We estimate that ∼2 Gg
of volcanogenic sulphur were deposited over the Etnean
area during the 2002–2003 flank eruption, at an average
rate of ∼24 Mg day−1 which is two orders of magnitude
higher than that typical of quiescent degassing
