    Nonminimal Couplings in the Early Universe: Multifield Models of Inflation and the Latest Observations

    Models of cosmic inflation suggest that our universe underwent an early phase of accelerated expansion, driven by the dynamics of one or more scalar fields. Inflationary models make specific, quantitative predictions for several observable quantities, including particular patterns of temperature anistropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation. Realistic models of high-energy physics include many scalar fields at high energies. Moreover, we may expect these fields to have nonminimal couplings to the spacetime curvature. Such couplings are quite generic, arising as renormalization counterterms when quantizing scalar fields in curved spacetime. In this chapter I review recent research on a general class of multifield inflationary models with nonminimal couplings. Models in this class exhibit a strong attractor behavior: across a wide range of couplings and initial conditions, the fields evolve along a single-field trajectory for most of inflation. Across large regions of phase space and parameter space, therefore, models in this general class yield robust predictions for observable quantities that fall squarely within the "sweet spot" of recent observations.Comment: 17pp, 2 figs.     Epidemiological and virological investigation of a Norovirus outbreak in a resort in Puglia, Italy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This paper describes the third large outbreak of Norovirus (NoV) gastroenteritis reported in the Southern Italy region of Puglia.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A matched case control study was conducted, on 19 July 2005, for investigating risk factors, using a structured questionnaire on food consumption. A multivariate analysis was conducted to estimate the adjusted Odds Ratios. Laboratory and environmental investigation were also performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>On the day of the study 41 cases were identified and 41 controls were enrolled. Controls were matched for age and gender. The mean age of the cases was 26 years old, and 58% were female. The clinical pattern of the disease was characterised by the presence of diarrhoea (95%), vomiting (70%), abdominal pain (51%) and fever (32%). Of the 41 cases included in the study, the majority (65%) were residents of Northern Italian regions. No food samples were available for testing. The matched univariate analysis revealed that cases were more likely to have consumed raw mussels, eggs or ice cubes made of tap water than controls. In the multivariate conditional logistic regression analysis, having eaten raw mussels or ice became more strongly associated with illness.</p> <p>All of the 20 faecal samples collected were tested for NoVs. Eighteen stools (90% of total examined) were positive by RT-PCR, and sequence analysis performed onto 3 samples confirmed the presence of a GGII NoV. No test specific for NoV was performed on water or food samples.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The most likely hypothesis supported by the findings of the epidemiological investigation was that illness was associated with raw mussels and ice, made with tap water. These hypothesis could not be confirmed by specific microbiologic testing for NoV in food or ice. The lack of clear knowledge of NoV as a major causative agent of epidemic outbreaks of gastroenteritis in Italy is due to the absence of timely reporting of the cases to the local public health offices and the uncommon practice of saving clinical samples for virological analysis after bacteriological testing.</p

    f(R) theories

    Over the past decade, f(R) theories have been extensively studied as one of the simplest modifications to General Relativity. In this article we review various applications of f(R) theories to cosmology and gravity - such as inflation, dark energy, local gravity constraints, cosmological perturbations, and spherically symmetric solutions in weak and strong gravitational backgrounds. We present a number of ways to distinguish those theories from General Relativity observationally and experimentally.     Radiolabelled peptides for oncological diagnosis

    Radiolabelled receptor-binding peptides targeting receptors (over)expressed on tumour cells are widely under investigation for tumour diagnosis and therapy. The concept of using radiolabelled receptor-binding peptides to target receptor-expressing tissues in vivo has stimulated a large body of research in nuclear medicine. The 111In-labelled somatostatin analogue octreotide (OctreoScan™) is the most successful radiopeptide for tumour imaging, and was the first to be approved for diagnostic use. Based on the success of these studies, other receptor-targeting peptides such as cholecystokinin/gastrin analogues, glucagon-like peptide-1, bombesin (BN), chemokine receptor CXCR4 targeting peptides, and RGD peptides are currently under development or undergoing clinical trials.     Epigenetic mechanisms in virus-induced tumorigenesis

    About 15–20% of human cancers worldwide have viral etiology. Emerging data clearly indicate that several human DNA and RNA viruses, such as human papillomavirus, Epstein–Barr virus, Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and human T-cell lymphotropic virus, contribute to cancer development. Human tumor-associated viruses have evolved multiple molecular mechanisms to disrupt specific cellular pathways to facilitate aberrant replication. Although oncogenic viruses belong to different families, their strategies in human cancer development show many similarities and involve viral-encoded oncoproteins targeting the key cellular proteins that regulate cell growth. Recent studies show that virus and host interactions also occur at the epigenetic level. In this review, we summarize the published information related to the interactions between viral proteins and epigenetic machinery which lead to alterations in the epigenetic landscape of the cell contributing to carcinogenesis

By virtue of their ability to raise HDL cholesterol and lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, pharmacological inhibitors of CETP have received considerable attention as potential new agents in cardiovascular prevention. While early studies of CETP inhibitors have demonstrated a lack of clinical efficacy and potential toxicity, development of the potent CETP inhibitor, anacetrapib, has moved forward, with emerging evidence suggesting a role in reducing cardiovascular events.     OBJECTIVES: Mimetic peptides of apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) present a new strategy for promoting the biological activity of high density lipoproteins (HDL). This study aimed to compare the anti-inflammatory effects of ETC-642, a new apoA-I mimetic peptide, with discoidal reconstituted HDL (rHDL). METHODS: New Zealand White rabbits (n=42) received daily infusions of saline, rHDL or discoidal complexes of an amphipathic peptide, ETC-642 (1-30 mg/kg), prior to insertion of non-occlusive carotid collars. Human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs) were pre-incubated with ETC-642 or rHDL before TNF-α stimulation. Monocyte adhesion was investigated by pre-incubating HCAECs with rHDL or ETC-642, stimulating with TNF-α and incubating with THP-1 monocytes. RESULTS: Infusion of ETC-642 resulted in dose-dependent reductions of collar-induced expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) in the artery wall (p<0.05). Pre-incubation of HCAECs with ETC-642 and rHDL reduced TNF-α-induced THP-1 monocyte adhesion (p<0.01). Furthermore, ETC-642 and rHDL treatment reduced TNF-α induced mRNA levels of inflammatory markers VCAM-1, fractalkine, MCP-1 and the p65 subunit of NF-κB (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: These studies demonstrate that ETC-642 exhibits anti-inflammatory properties that are comparable to apoA-I both in vivo and in vitro and that these effects are mediated via the NF-κB signaling pathway
