A Semiparametric Generalized Exponential Regression Model with a Principled Distance-based Prior for Analyzing Trends in Rainfall
The Western Ghats mountain range holds critical importance in regulating
monsoon rainfall across Southern India, with a profound impact on regional
agriculture. Here, we analyze daily wet-day rainfall data for the monsoon
months between 1901-2022 for the Northern, Middle, and Southern Western Ghats
regions. Motivated by an exploratory data analysis, we introduce a
semiparametric Bayesian generalized exponential (GE) regression model; despite
the underlying GE distribution assumption being well-known in the literature,
including in the context of rainfall analysis, no research explored it in a
regression setting, as of our knowledge. Our proposed approach involves
modeling the GE rate parameter within a generalized additive model framework.
An important feature is the integration of a principled distance-based prior
for the GE shape parameter; this allows the model to shrink to an exponential
regression model that retains the advantages of the exponential family. We draw
inferences using the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Extensive simulations
demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms simpler alternatives. Applying
the model to analyze the rainfall data over 122 years provides insights into
model parameters, temporal patterns, and the impact of climate change. We
observe a significant decreasing trend in wet-day rainfall for the Southern
Western Ghats region.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figure
Rapid-adiabatic-passage-based super-resolution microscopy in semiconductor quantum dot system
We theoretically investigate rapid adiabatic passage(RAP)-based
super-resolution imaging in a two-level quantum dot system interacting with two
structured beams. To understand the physical mechanism behind the formation of
super-resolution for the experiment of Kaldewey {\it et. al.,}[Nature Photonics
10.1038/s41566-017-0079-y (2018)], we first use Liouville's density matrix
where photon-mediated radiative and non-radiative decays are incorporated. A
suitably chosen spatiotemporal envelope of the structured beams enables the
formation of a super-resolution image. We also find that the feature size of
the image depends on the intensity of the Laguerre Gaussian beam(LG). However,
the created image resolution undergoes distortion due to the existence of a
low-intensity circular ring. The unwanted circular ring arises from the
dominance of the LG beam tail over the super-Gaussian(SG) beam tail, initiating
the residual population transfer from the ground state to the excited state.
This limitation can be overcome by using the Bessel-modulated truncated
structured LG and SG beams. We next study the dynamics of the semiconductor
quantum dot system at finite temperatures wherein the phonon interaction
becomes imperative. We employ the polaron-transformed master equation to
explore the system at higher temperatures. Our numerical results confirm that
the sharpness of the image remains intact at low temperatures with weak phonon
coupling. Hence, the proposed scheme may open up applications in nano-scale
imaging with quantum dots.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure

Self-induced Transparency in a Semiconductor Quantum Dot medium at ultra-cold temperatures
We investigate the feasibility of minimum absorption and minimum broadening
of pulse propagation in an inhomogeneously broadened semiconductor quantum dot
medium. The phonon interaction is inevitable in studying any semiconductor
quantum dot system. We have used the polaron transformation technique to deal
with quantum dot phonon interaction in solving system dynamics. We demonstrate
that a short pulse can propagate inside the medium with minimal absorption and
broadening in pulse shape. The stable pulse area becomes slightly higher than
the prediction of the pulse area theorem and is also dependent on the
environment temperature. The change in the final pulse shape is explained very
well by numerically solving the propagation equation supported by the
susceptibility of the medium. Our system also exhibits the pulse breakup
phenomena for higher input pulse areas. Therefore, the considered scheme can
have important applications in quantum communication, quantum information, and
mode-locking with the advantage of scalability and controllability.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
Evaluation of extracellular enzyme-producing autochthonous gut bacteria in walking catfish, Clarias batrachus (L.)
The present study was carried out to screen autochthonous gut bacteria in freshwater air breathing walking catfish, Clarias batrachus Linnaeus. Altogether, 100 extracellular enzyme-producing bacteria were isolated from the foregut (FG) and hindgut (HG) regions. Data were presented as log viable counts g-1 gut (LVC). The occurrence of heterotrophic bacterial population was higher in the FG region (LVC = 8.25) than the HG (LVC= 7.3). Similarly, proteolytic, amylolytic and lipolytic bacteria in FG outnumbered (LVC=7.25, 6.77 and 5.23 respectively) the HG (LVC=6.38, 5.58 and 4.04 respectively). However, occurrence of cellulolytic bacteria in both, FG and HG was less (LVC=2.1 and 1.34 respectively) in comparison to the other extracellular enzyme-producing bacteria. Out of the 100 bacterial isolates, 22 isolates were primarily selected through qualitative assay of extracellular enzyme activities. Among them, 3 promising isolates were chosen as potent extracellular enzyme producers on the basis of cumulative scores (â„11) of the qualitative assay and quantitative enzyme assay. Maximum protease activity was revealed by the strain FG10 (201±2.40U), while FG43 exhibited maximum amylase (208.3±10.8U) and lipase (4.73±0.05U) activities. Among the strains isolated from the HG, the highest protease (188.3±1.2U), amylase (97.6±0.46U) and lipase (3.7±0.11U) activities were recorded with the strain HG01.
Nondegenerate two-photon lasing in a single quantum dot
We propose two-mode two-photon microlaser using a single semiconductor
quantum dot grown inside a two-mode microcavity. We explore both incoherent and
coherent pumping at low temperatures to achieve suitable conditions for
two-mode two-photon lasing. The two-mode two-photon stimulated emission is
strongly suppressed but the single-photon stimulated emission is enhanced by
exciton-phonon interactions. In coherently pumped quantum dot one can achieve
large two-mode two-photon lasing where single-photon lasing is almost absent.
We also discuss generation of steady state two-mode entangled state using
two-photon resonant pumping.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figure

The Mahanadi Delta region in Odisha faces serious threats and challenges to safeguard land based resources and coastal resources supporting millions of coastal population in terms of climate change and related impacts viz. intense tropical cyclones, coastal erosion, land submergence, coastal inundation. The present situation demands attention and early actions for resilience to the impact of climate change through effective policy/plan changes
Review of national adaptation policies, India - WT6.1.2
This series is based on the work of the Deltas, Vulnerability and Climate Change: Migration and Adaptation (DECCMA) project, funded by Canadaâs International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UKâs Department for International Development (DFID) through the Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA).This report is aimed at focusing on the issue of Adaptation with reference to Climate Change in Indian National Context. India being a signatory to UNFCCC and also to Kyoto Protocol, has been playing a active role in taking appropriate initiative to support âAdaptationâ, as a part of action in the mainframe National Policies; besides, featuring Adaptation in the National Environment Policy in 2006 (23), India has also effectively incorporated the subject of Adaptation in the National Action Plan Climate Change in 2008(13) and in host of cross sectoral National Policies for e.g. Agriculture (16), Water (22), Forest (19), Energy (31), Livelihood Security (29;32), etc. This document presents a synoptic review based on Critical Analysis of National Policies and Action Plan which, have referred to the issue of Adaptation due to Climate Change, as an area of consideration
Detection of circulating microparticles by flow cytometry: influence of centrifugation, filtration of buffer, and freezing
The clinical importance of microparticles resulting from vesiculation of platelets and other blood cells is increasingly recognized, although no standardized method exists for their measurement. Only a few studies have examined the analytical and preanalytical steps and variables affecting microparticle detection. We focused our analysis on microparticle detection by flow cytometry. The goal of our study was to analyze the effects of different centrifugation protocols looking at different durations of high and low centrifugation speeds. We also analyzed the effect of filtration of buffer and long-term freezing on microparticle quantification, as well as the role of Annexin V in the detection of microparticles. Absolute and platelet-derived microparticles were 10- to 15-fold higher using initial lower centrifugation speeds at 1500 Ă g compared with protocols using centrifugation speeds at 5000 Ă g (P < 0.01). A clear separation between true events and background noise was only achieved using higher centrifugation speeds. Filtration of buffer with a 0.2 ÎŒm filter reduced a significant amount of background noise. Storing samples for microparticle detection at â80°C decreased microparticle levels at days 28, 42, and 56 (P < 0.05 for all comparisons with fresh samples). We believe that staining with Annexin V is necessary to distinguish true events from cell debris or precipitates. Buffers should be filtered and fresh samples should be analyzed, or storage periods will have to be standardized. Higher centrifugation speeds should be used to minimize contamination by smaller size platelets
