CuInS2/ZnS nanocrystals as sensitisers for NiO photocathodes

    Get PDF
Nickel oxide (NiO) is the most universally studied photocathode to date, however, its poor fill factor (FF) makes its efficiency much lower than its counterpart, n-type photoanodes. Its significance in photovoltaics is based on the potential to fabricate tandem photoelectrodes in order to enhance the overall efficiency of the existing devices. Furthermore, limited work on the sensitisation of NiO with semiconducting nanocrystals (NCs) exists. For the first time, we have fabricated NiO photocathodes sensitised with aqueous CuInS2/ZnS NCs. The NCs were chemically bound to the NiO films with the aid of carboxyl and thiol groups. This was achieved without modifying the bulk surface properties of NiO. Binding of the NCs was investigated using TEM, SEM, XPS, XANES, EXAFS modelling and ToF-SIMS. NiO films were assembled into CuInS2/ZnS NC sensitised photocathodes and their photovoltaic properties were compared to those of unsensitised and dye-sensitised NiO solar cells. We demonstrate that nontoxic NCs can be used to sensitise NiO photocathodes to achieve an (almost) all-inorganic system

SWCNT photocathodes sensitised with InP/ZnS core-shell nanocrystals

Increasing the light harvesting efficiency of photocathodes is an integral part of optimising the future efficiencies of solar technologies. In contrast to the more extensively studied photoanode systems, current state-of-the-art photocathodes are less efficient and are commonly replaced with rare and expensive materials such as platinum group metals. The significance of photocathodes is in the development of tandem electrodes, enhancing the performance of existing devices. Carbon nanotubes are promising candidates for photocathodes, which, in addition to their p-type conductivity and catalytic properties, possess a suite of unique optical and electrical attributes. This work describes the fabrication of single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) photocathodes sensitised with indium phosphide/zinc sulfide (InP/ZnS) core–shell nanocrystals (NCs). Under air mass (AM) 1.5 conditions, the sensitisation of SWCNT photocathodes with InP/ZnS NCs increased the photocurrent density by 350% of the unsensitised output. This significant enhancement of current density demonstrates the potential of InP/ZnS NCs as effective sensitisers to improve the performance of carbon-based photocathode thin films

CHARACTERIZATION OF MESENCHYMAL STEM CELLS FROM WHITE ADIPOSE TISSUE OF Macaca fascicularis

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) derived from white adipose tissue are considered to be an appropriate therapeutic candidate for various human diseases due to their natural ability to maintain homeostasis. They have also been considered for use as a therapeutic alternative due to their sufficient availability and ease of harvesting. MSC play an important role in the process of adipogenesis and energy metabolism that is directly related to the pathogenesis of various degenerative diseases and metabolic syndromes. The purpose of this study was to obtain MSC cultures from white adipose tissue biopsied from three adult males Macaca fascicularis and to evaluate these cultures qualitatively and quantitatively regarding their characteristics and ability to differentiate. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to confirm the expression of mesenchymal stem cell-specific gene markers, and a specific growth medium was used to differentiate these cells into adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteocytes. The results obtained showed that the MSC culture from M. fascicularis WAT had a fibroblast-like morphology with a spindle shape. The MSC markers of CD73, CD90 and CD105, were also expressed. The MSC culture was also able to differentiate into adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteocytes. Based on these results, white adipose tissue from Macaca fascicularis was found to have potential as a source of MSC

The Evolution of Compact Binary Star Systems

    Get PDF
We review the formation and evolution of compact binary stars consisting of white dwarfs (WDs), neutron stars (NSs), and black holes (BHs). Binary NSs and BHs are thought to be the primary astrophysical sources of gravitational waves (GWs) within the frequency band of ground-based detectors, while compact binaries of WDs are important sources of GWs at lower frequencies to be covered by space interferometers (LISA). Major uncertainties in the current understanding of properties of NSs and BHs most relevant to the GW studies are discussed, including the treatment of the natal kicks which compact stellar remnants acquire during the core collapse of massive stars and the common envelope phase of binary evolution. We discuss the coalescence rates of binary NSs and BHs and prospects for their detections, the formation and evolution of binary WDs and their observational manifestations. Special attention is given to AM CVn-stars -- compact binaries in which the Roche lobe is filled by another WD or a low-mass partially degenerate helium-star, as these stars are thought to be the best LISA verification binary GW sources.Comment: 105 pages, 18 figure

Dalihan Na Tolu system is one element in the culture of Batak Toba. Dalihan Na Tolu is a system of kinship that is used as a basis and reference for the Batak Toba community within their social life. The Dalihan Na Tolu system contains statuses and roles. In determining social status, Batak Toba people first consider their lineage and clan. Outlined by Dalihan Na Tolu and established specific guidelines and laws for different social relationships such as those between a husband and wife, parents, and siblings from each party, additionally each party performed boru and hula-hula. Dalihan Na Tolu becomes the ideal form of kinship for the Batak people of Toba only if implemented in accordance with its principles. This research is descriptive qualitative research obtained through literature study, interview and observation data collection techniques. The material object of this study is the kinship system of the Batak Toba community. Based on the study is findings , it is known that dalihan na tolu dalam culture is the key in the implementation of marriage ceremonies. boru duties as part of the pretext na tolu in every marriage ceremony and other traditional ceremonies have been arranged. The Batak community has clear rules, who does what, who receives and gives what. Perfection of a traditional ceremony for the Batak people is measured by the completeness of the elements of the pretext na tolu to attend the ceremony women and her husband's group (boru) occupy a lower position while the giver of women (hula- hula) occupy a higher position. In this case, women become the object while men become the determining subject of one's position in the structure of dalihan na tol
