Ionization Structure and the Reverse Shock in E0102-72
The young oxygen-rich supernova remnant E0102-72 in the Small Magellanic
Cloud has been observed with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer
of Chandra. The high resolution X-ray spectrum reveals images of the remnant in
the light of individual emission lines of oxygen, neon, magnesium and silicon.
The peak emission region for hydrogen-like ions lies at larger radial distance
from the SNR center than the corresponding helium-like ions, suggesting passage
of the ejecta through the "reverse shock". We examine models which test this

Spectral Line Imaging Observations of 1E0102.2-7219
E0102-72 is the second brightest X-ray source in the Small Magellanic Cloud
and the brightest supernova remnant in the SMC. We observed this SNR for ~140
ksec with the High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG) aboard the Chandra X-ray
Observatory. The small angular size and high surface brightness make this an
excellent target for HETG and we resolve the remnant into individual lines. We
observe fluxes from several lines which include O VIII Ly, Ly,
and O VII along with several lines from Ne X, Ne IX and Mg XII. These line
ratios provide powerful constraints on the electron temperature and the

Morphine Decreases Enteric Neuron Excitability via Inhibition of Sodium Channels
Gastrointestinal peristalsis is significantly dependent on the enteric nervous system. Constipation due to reduced peristalsis is a major side-effect of morphine, which limits the chronic usefulness of this excellent pain reliever in man. The ionic basis for the inhibition of enteric neuron excitability by morphine is not well characterized as previous studies have mainly utilized microelectrode recordings from whole mount myenteric plexus preparations in guinea pigs. Here we have developed a Swiss-Webster mouse myenteric neuron culture and examined their electrophysiological properties by patch-clamp techniques and determined the mechanism for morphine-induced decrease in neuronal excitability. Isolated neurons in culture were confirmed by immunostaining with pan-neuronal marker, β-III tubulin and two populations were identified by calbindin and calretinin staining. Distinct neuronal populations were further identified based on the presence and absence of an afterhyperpolarization (AHP). Cells with AHP expressed greater density of sodium currents. Morphine (3 µM) significantly reduced the amplitude of the action potential, increased the threshold for spike generation but did not alter the resting membrane potential. The decrease in excitability resulted from inhibition of sodium currents. In the presence of morphine, the steady-state voltage dependence of Na channels was shifted to the left with almost 50% of channels unavailable for activation from hyperpolarized potentials. During prolonged exposure to morphine (two hours), action potentials recovered, indicative of the development of tolerance in single enteric neurons. These results demonstrate the feasibility of isolating mouse myenteric neurons and establish sodium channel inhibition as a mechanism for morphine-induced decrease in neuronal excitability
Chandra observations of SN 1987A: the soft X-ray light curve revisited
We report on the present stage of SN 1987A as observed by the Chandra X-ray
Observatory. We reanalyze published Chandra observations and add three more
epochs of Chandra data to get a consistent picture of the evolution of the
X-ray fluxes in several energy bands. We discuss the implications of several
calibration issues for Chandra data. Using the most recent Chandra calibration
files, we find that the 0.5-2.0 keV band fluxes of SN 1987A have increased by
~6 x 10 ^-13 erg s^-1 cm^-2 per year since 2009. This is in contrast with our
previous result that the 0.5-2.0 keV light curve showed a sudden flattening in
2009. Based on our new analysis, we conclude that the forward shock is still in

Self-Modification of Policy and Utility Function in Rational Agents
Any agent that is part of the environment it interacts with and has versatile
actuators (such as arms and fingers), will in principle have the ability to
self-modify -- for example by changing its own source code. As we continue to
create more and more intelligent agents, chances increase that they will learn
about this ability. The question is: will they want to use it? For example,
highly intelligent systems may find ways to change their goals to something
more easily achievable, thereby `escaping' the control of their designers. In
an important paper, Omohundro (2008) argued that goal preservation is a
fundamental drive of any intelligent system, since a goal is more likely to be
achieved if future versions of the agent strive towards the same goal. In this
paper, we formalise this argument in general reinforcement learning, and
explore situations where it fails. Our conclusion is that the self-modification
possibility is harmless if and only if the value function of the agent
anticipates the consequences of self-modifications and use the current utility

Comparative efficacies of decision strategies and the effects of learning in dynamic environments: a computer simulation approach
Models of aggregation in management science and economics are not consistent with micro-empirical knowledge of individual decision making. This has occurred as a result of using heuristics that are derived from behavioral studies which focused on discrete incidents. This approach fails to recognize decision making as a continuous process and overlooks the importance of feedback. This study examines the performance of various decision strategies (heuristics) in dynamic environments through computer simulation. Within dynamic task environments, three classes of strategies are examined: (a) feedback oriented strategies, (b) non-feedback oriented strategies and; (c) a strategy that incorporates learning. The relative efficacies of these strategies are compared. The results show that feedback oriented strategies achieved a higher level of performance than non-feedback oriented strategies. And the strategy that incorporated learning outperformed all other strategies. A few anomalies exist and may require additional sampling. The implications of these findings for command decision making indicate that, feedback from prior military actions can play an important role in adapting existing systems to meets new military roles in changing environments.http://archive.org/details/comparativeeffic1094539992Captain, United States Marine CorpsApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited
emiT: an apparatus to test time reversal invariance in polarized neutron decay
We describe an apparatus used to measure the triple-correlation term (\D
\hat{\sigma}_n\cdot p_e\times p_\nu) in the beta-decay of polarized neutrons.
The \D-coefficient is sensitive to possible violations of time reversal
invariance. The detector has an octagonal symmetry that optimizes
electron-proton coincidence rates and reduces systematic effects. A beam of
longitudinally polarized cold neutrons passes through the detector chamber,
where a small fraction beta-decay. The final-state protons are accelerated and
focused onto arrays of cooled semiconductor diodes, while the coincident
electrons are detected using panels of plastic scintillator. Details regarding
the design and performance of the proton detectors, beta detectors and the
electronics used in the data collection system are presented. The neutron beam
characteristics, the spin-transport magnetic fields, and polarization
