The Wanganui River: A recreation survey
This Report is a joint undertaking between Lincoln College and the Wanganui River Scenic Board. Its principal objective is to provide user information which in conjunction with other essential resource information will offer a substantive basis for management planning. As such, this report which looks at users, their motivations, characteristics, satisfactions and management preferences, may be unique in such a planning ventur
Mapping the CMB II: the second flight of the QMAP experiment
We report the results from the second flight of QMAP, an experiment to map
the cosmic microwave background near the North Celestial Pole. We present maps
of the sky at 31 and 42 GHz as well as a measurement of the angular power
spectrum covering the l-range 40-200. Anisotropy is detected at about 20 sigma
and is in agreement with previous results at these angular scales. We also
report details of the data reduction and analysis techniques which were used

The EBEX Experiment
EBEX is a balloon-borne polarimeter designed to measure the intensity and
polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation. The measurements
would probe the inflationary epoch that took place shortly after the big bang
and would significantly improve constraints on the values of several
cosmological parameters. EBEX is unique in its broad frequency coverage and in
its ability to provide critical information about the level of polarized
Galactic foregrounds which will be necessary for all future CMB polarization
experiments. EBEX consists of a 1.5 m Dragone-type telescope that provides a
resolution of less than 8 arcminutes over four focal planes each of 4 degree
diffraction limited field of view at frequencies up to 450 GHz. The experiment
is designed to accommodate 330 transition edge bolometric detectors per focal
plane, for a total of up to 1320 detectors. EBEX will operate with frequency
bands centered at 150, 250, 350, and 450 GHz. Polarimetry is achieved with a
rotating achromatic half-wave plate. EBEX is currently in the design and
construction phase, and first light is scheduled for 2008.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Figure 1 is changed from the one which appeared

90GHz and 150GHz observations of the Orion M42 region. A sub-millimeter to radio analysis
We have used the new 90GHz MUSTANG camera on the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank
Telescope (GBT) to map the bright Huygens region of the star-forming region M42
with a resolution of 9" and a sensitivity of 2.8mJy/beam. 90GHz is an
interesting transition frequency, as MUSTANG detects both the free-free
emission characteristic of the HII region created by the Trapezium stars,
normally seen at lower frequencies, and thermal dust emission from the
background OMC1 molecular cloud, normally mapped at higher frequencies. We also
present similar data from the 150GHz GISMO camera taken on the IRAM telescope.
This map has 15" resolution. By combining the MUSTANG data with 1.4, 8, and
21GHz radio data from the VLA and GBT, we derive a new estimate of the emission
measure (EM) averaged electron temperature of Te = 11376K by an original method
relating free-free emission intensities at optically thin and optically thick
frequencies. Combining ISO-LWS data with our data, we derive a new estimate of
the dust temperature and spectral emissivity index within the 80" ISO-LWS beam
toward OrionKL/BN, Td = 42K and Beta=1.3. We show that both Td and Beta
decrease when going from the HII region and excited OMC1 interface to the
denser UV shielded part of OMC1 (OrionKL/BN, Orion S). With a model consisting
of only free-free and thermal dust emission we are able to fit data taken at
frequencies from 1.5GHz to 854GHz.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journa
The time resolution of the St. Petersburg paradox
A resolution of the St. Petersburg paradox is presented. In contrast to the
standard resolution, utility is not required. Instead, the time-average
performance of the lottery is computed. The final result can be phrased
mathematically identically to Daniel Bernoulli's resolution, which uses
logarithmic utility, but is derived using a conceptually different argument.
The advantage of the time resolution is the elimination of arbitrary utility

Long-distance contribution to the forward-backward asymmetry in decays K+ --> pi+ l+ l-
The long-distance contribution via the two-photon intermediate state to the
forward-backward asymmetries in decays K+ --> pi+ l+ l- (l=e and mu) has been
studied within the standard model. In order to evaluate the dispersive part of
the K+ --> pi+ gamma* gamma* --> pi+ l+ l- amplitude, we employ a
phenomenological form factor to soften the ultraviolet behavior of the
transition. It is found that, this long-distance transition, although subject
to some theoretical uncertainties, can lead to significant contributions to the
forward-backward asymmetries, which could be tested in the future high-precise
