    Mach's Principle and Model for a Broken Symmetric Theory of Gravity

    We investigate spontaneous symmetry breaking in a conformally invariant gravitational model. In particular, we use a conformally invariant scalar tensor theory as the vacuum sector of a gravitational model to examine the idea that gravitational coupling may be the result of a spontaneous symmetry breaking. In this model matter is taken to be coupled with a metric which is different but conformally related to the metric appearing explicitly in the vacuum sector. We show that after the spontaneous symmetry breaking the resulting theory is consistent with Mach's principle in the sense that inertial masses of particles have variable configurations in a cosmological context. Moreover, our analysis allows to construct a mechanism in which the resulting large vacuum energy density relaxes during evolution of the universe.Comment: 9 pages, no figure

    Объектами исследования являются метрологические характеристики генератора сигналов прецизионного ГС-50: погрешность уровня выходного напряжения, коэффициент гармоник. Данная работа ставит целью компьютерное моделирование генератора с учетом шумов элементов на предмет исследования его выходных параметров. В ходе работы был выбран и изучен программный пакет Multisim для дальнейшего моделирования, собраны схемы инвертора и интегратора, проведено их моделирование и исследование В результате работы была получена модель генератора с характеристиками соответствующими реальным характеристикам генератора сигналов прецизионного ГС-50.The objects of research are metrological characteristics of the precision GS-50 signal generator: the error of the output voltage level, the coefficient of harmonics. This work aims at computer simulation of the generator taking into account the noise of elements in order to study its output parameters. In the course of the work, the Multisim software package was selected and studied for further modeling, the inverter and integrator circuits were collected, their modeling and research were carried out. As a result, a generator model with characteristics corresponding to the real characteristics of the precision GS-50 signal generator was obtained

    Urban eddy covariance measurements reveal significant missing NOx emissions in Central Europe

    Nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution is emerging as a primary environmental concern across Europe. While some large European metropolitan areas are already in breach of EU safety limits for NO2, this phenomenon does not seem to be only restricted to large industrialized areas anymore. Many smaller scale populated agglomerations including their surrounding rural areas are seeing frequent NO2 concentration violations. The question of a quantitative understanding of different NOx emission sources is therefore of immanent relevance for climate and air chemistry models as well as air pollution management and health. Here we report simultaneous eddy covariance flux measurements of NOx, CO2, CO and non methane volatile organic compound tracers in a city that might be considered representative for Central Europe and the greater Alpine region. Our data show that NOx fluxes are largely at variance with modelled emission projections, suggesting an appreciable underestimation of the traffic related atmospheric NOx input in Europe, comparable to the weekend-weekday effect, which locally changes ozone production rates by 40%

    Hydration dynamics at fluorinated protein surfaces

    Water-protein interactions dictate many processes crucial to protein function including folding, dynamics, interactions with other biomolecules, and enzymatic catalysis. Here we examine the effect of surface fluorination on water-protein interactions. Modification of designed coiled-coil proteins by incorporation of 5,5,5-trifluoroleucine or (4S)-2-amino-4-methylhexanoic acid enables systematic examination of the effects of side-chain volume and fluorination on solvation dynamics. Using ultrafast fluorescence spectroscopy, we find that fluorinated side chains exert electrostatic drag on neighboring water molecules, slowing water motion at the protein surface

    Alkali-activated slag cements produced with a blended sodium carbonate/sodium silicate activator

    An alkali-activated slag cement produced with a blend of sodium carbonate/sodium silicate activator was characterised. This binder hardened within 12 h and achieved a compressive strength of 20 MPa after 24 h of curing under ambient conditions, which is associated with the formation of an aluminium substituted calcium silicate hydrate as the main reaction product. Carbonates including pirssonite, vaterite, aragonite and calcite were identified along with the zeolites hydroxysodalite and analcime at early times of reaction. The partial substitution of sodium carbonate by sodium silicate reduces the concentration of carbonate ions in the pore solution, increasing the alkalinity of the system compared with a solely carbonate-activated paste, accelerating the kinetics of reaction and supplying additional silicate species to react with the calcium dissolving from the slag as the reaction proceeds. These results demonstrate that this blend of activators can be used effectively for the production of high-strength alkali-activated slag cements, with a microstructure comparable to what has been identified in aged sodium-carbonate-activated slag cements but without the extended setting time reaction usually identified when using this salt as an alkali activator

    Mechanical performance of fly ash geopolymeric mortars containing phase change materials

    European Union (EU) aims to achieve nearly zero-energy (public) building (NZEB)  by the end of 2018. This very ambitious target would be more easily fulfilled if high- thermal performance materials like phase change materials (PCMs) are to be used.  This paper reports experimental results on the mechanical properties of  geopolymeric mortars containing PCMs at ambient temperature and after exposure  to high temperature. The results show that the inclusion of PCMs is responsible for a  reduction of the mechanical strength of the mortars. Several mixtures showed an  increase in compressive strength after being exposed to high temperatures. Since  PCMs are made of flammable materials, geopolymeric mortars are more advantageous than Portland cement-based mortars for PCM incorporation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Hypercoagulability progresses to hypocoagulability during evolution of acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury in pigs

    Increases in prothrombin time (PT) and international normalised ratio (INR) characterise acute liver injury (ALI) and failure (ALF), yet a wide heterogeneity in clotting abnormalities exists. This study defines evolution of coagulopathy in 10 pigs with acetaminophen (APAP)-induced ALI compared to 3 Controls. APAP administration began at 0 h and continued to ‘ALF’, defined as INR >3. In APAP pigs, INR was 1.05 ± 0.02 at 0 h, 2.15 ± 0.43 at 16 h and > 3 at 18 ± 1 h. At 12 h thromboelastography (TEG) demonstrated increased clot formation rate, associated with portal vein platelet aggregates and reductions in protein C, protein S, antithrombin and A Disintegrin and Metalloprotease with Thrombospondin type 1 repeats–13 (ADAMTS-13) to 60%, 24%, 47% and 32% normal respectively. At 18 ± 1 h, INR > 3 was associated with: hypocoagulable TEG profile with heparin-like effect; falls in thrombin generation, Factor V and Factor VIII to 52%, 19% and 17% normal respectively; further decline in anticoagulants; thrombocytopenia; neutrophilia and endotoxemia. Multivariate analysis, found that ADAMTS-13 was an independent predictor of a hypercoagulable TEG profile and platelet count, endotoxin, Protein C and fibrinogen were independent predictors of a hypocoagulable TEG profile. INR remained normal in Controls. Dynamic changes in coagulation occur with progression of ALI: a pro-thrombotic state progresses to hypocoagulability
