Celescope catalog of ultraviolet stellar observations
The catalog contains the observational results obtained by the Celescope Experiment during the first 16 months of operation of NASA's Orbiting Astronomical Observatory (OAO-2). It lists the results of the stellar observations, along with selected ground-based information obtained from the available literature. Lunar observations (Ahmad and Deutschman, 1972), as well as other analyses of the data, are being published as separate papers. These data are available in two forms: (1) magnetic tapes and the necessary utility programs for reading and printing the contents of the tapes; and (2) this catalog, transcribed from the magnetic-tape catalog. The magnetic tape version contains not only the compiled results but also the results of the individual observations from which these averaged data were compiled

This report describes the experiment, the data it gathered, the format of the magnetic tape containing the data, and a number of programs that were written to read and manipulate the tape. The tape version of the catalog contains Data on 5068 stars and is available from the National Space Sciences Data Center

Mitochondrial dysfunction in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in pediatric septic shock
OBJECTIVES: Mitochondrial dysfunction in peripheral blood mononuclear cells has been linked to immune dysregulation and organ failure in adult sepsis, but pediatric data are limited. We hypothesized that pediatric septic shock patients exhibit mitochondrial dysfunction within peripheral blood mononuclear cells which in turn correlates with global organ injury. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Academic PICU. PATIENTS: Thirteen pediatric patients with septic shock and greater than or equal to two organ failures and 11 PICU controls without sepsis or organ failure. INTERVENTIONS: Ex vivo measurements of mitochondrial oxygen consumption and membrane potential (DeltaPsim) were performed in intact peripheral blood mononuclear cells on day 1-2 and day 5-7 of septic illness and in controls. The Pediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction score, inotrope score, and organ failure-free days were determined from medical records. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Spare respiratory capacity, an index of bioenergetic reserve, was lower in septic peripheral blood mononuclear cells on day 1-2 (median, 1.81; interquartile range, 0.52-2.09 pmol O2/s/10 cells) compared with controls (5.55; 2.80-7.21; p = 0.03). Spare respiratory capacity normalized by day 5-7. Patients with sepsis on day 1-2 exhibited a higher ratio of LEAK to maximal respiration than controls (17% vs \u3c 1%; p = 0.047) with normalization by day 5-7 (1%; p = 0.008), suggesting mitochondrial uncoupling early in sepsis. However, septic peripheral blood mononuclear cells exhibited no differences in basal or adenosine triphosphate-linked oxygen consumption or DeltaPsim. Oxygen consumption did not correlate with Pediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction score, inotrope score, or organ failure-free days (all p \u3e 0.05). Although there was a weak overall association between DeltaPsim on day 1-2 and organ failure-free days (Spearman rho = 0.56, p = 0.06), patients with sepsis with normal organ function by day 7 exhibited higher DeltaPsim on day 1-2 compared with patients with organ failure for more than 7 days (p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Mitochondrial dysfunction was present in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in pediatric sepsis, evidenced by decreased bioenergetic reserve and increased uncoupling. Mitochondrial membrane potential, but not respiration, was associated with duration of organ injury
Chronic hypoxemia increases myocardial cytochrome oxidase
ObjectiveCyanotic patients have potentially decreased tissue oxygen tension. Cytochrome oxidase catalyzes the reduction of oxygen and is integral to adenosine triphosphate production. Cytochrome oxidase subunit I, the active site, is encoded by mitochondrial DNA. Using a newborn swine model of chronic hypoxemia, we evaluated ventricular cytochrome oxidase subunit I mRNA and protein expression and assessed cytochrome oxidase activity.MethodsThirty-two newborn piglets underwent thoracotomy and placement of a pulmonary artery–to–left atrium shunt or sham operation. Two weeks later, partial pressure of arterial oxygen, hematocrit, and left ventricular shortening fraction values were compared with baseline values. Northern blot hybridization and protein immunoblotting for ventricular cytochrome oxidase subunit I were performed. Cytochrome oxidase kinetic activity was measured. Heme a,a3 content and turnover number were determined. Significance was assessed with a t test.ResultsBaseline partial pressure of arterial oxygen and hematocrit values were similar. Hypoxemic piglets had a lower partial pressure of arterial oxygen of 38 ± 10 mm Hg (P < .001) and higher hematocrit value of 31.4% ± 2.9% (P < .001) compared with a partial pressure of arterial oxygen of 140 ± 47 mm Hg and hematocrit value of 24.6% ± 3.9% after the sham operation. Baseline and postprocedure left ventricular shortening fraction were similar within and between groups. Chronic hypoxemia increased right ventricular and left ventricular cytochrome oxidase I mRNA and protein by more than 1.4-fold. Cytochrome oxidase activity increased significantly in hypoxemia by 2.5-fold compared with that seen after the sham operation. Heme a,a3 content and turnover number increased by 1.5-fold during hypoxemia.ConclusionsChronic hypoxemia increases cytochrome oxidase I message, protein expression, and activity. The increase in kinetics was due to increased enzyme content and catalytic activity. This is a possible adaptive mechanism that might preserve organ function during chronic hypoxemia

Extreme managers, extreme workplaces: capitalism, organizations and corporate psychopaths
This paper reports on in-depth, qualitative research carried out in England in 2013 among five organizational directors and two senior managers who had worked with other senior directors or managers who were Corporate Psychopaths, as measured by a management psychopathy measure. The Corporate Psychopaths reported on in this research displayed remarkable consistency in their approach to management to the extent that they could be called “text book examples” of managerial psychopathy. They were seen as being organizational stars and as deserving of performance awards by those above them, while the Corporate Psychopaths simultaneously subjected those below them to extreme forms of behavior, including bullying, intimidation and coercion and also engaged in extreme forms of mismanagement; such as very poor levels of personnel management, directionless leadership, miss-management of resources and outright fraud
