    COVID-19 considerations and strategy for a safe return to international football competitions : an African perspective

    The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many aspects of life worldwide—educational, economic, cultural, social and sporting. To limit the spread of COVID-19, initial containment strategies included proper mask wearing, respiratory and hand hygiene, social/physical distancing and different levels of lockdown to limit social interaction. While competitive sport has also been impacted by these measures, risk mitigation protocols have allowed competitions at the national, international and professional levels to resume in some countries around the world. However, additional barriers exist on the African continent to safely resume sport that may not exist elsewhere. These include cost and resource limitations to facilitate player and staff education, safe team transport, hotel and club sanitisation, regular COVID-19 PCR testing with short result turnaround times and access to vaccinations. This commentary outlines practical recommendations for a scientifically valid COVID-19 risk mitigating strategy to enhance safety for teams and spectators at African football competitions that accommodate regional challenges.http://bjsm.bmj.comhj2023Sports Medicin

    Performance of the SD Bioline rapid diagnostic test as a good alternative to the detection of human African trypanosomiasis in Cameroon

    Background: Case detection is essential for the management of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), which is caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. Prior to parasitological confirmation, routine screening using the card agglutination test for trypanosomiasis (CATT) is essential. Recently, individual rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for the serodiagnosis of HAT have been developed. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the contribution of SD Bioline HAT to the serological screening of human African trypanosomiasis in Cameroonian foci.Methods. Between June 2014 and January 2015, blood samples were collected during surveys in the foci of Campo, Yokadouma, and Fontem. The sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of SD Bioline HAT were determined using the CATT as the gold standard for the detection of specific antibodies against Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. Results: A total of 88 samples were tested: 59.1% (n=52) in Campo, 31.8% (n=28) in Yokadouma, and 9.1% (n=8) in Fontem. There were 61.4% (n=54) males and 38.4% (n=34) females, and the average age was 35.4 19.0 years. In probed foci, the overall seroprevalence was 11.4% (95% confidence interval: 6.3-19.7) with the CATT method and 18.2% (95% confidence interval: 11.5-27.2%) with the SD Bioline HAT RDT method. The SD Bioline HAT's Se and Sp were 80.0% and 89.7%, respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the overall performance of the SD Bioline HAT was comparable to that of the CATT, with high specificity in the serological detection of HAT

    The COVID-19 wave was already here: High seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among staff and students in a Cameroon University

    Background: Seroprevalence studies, to estimate the proportion of people that has been infected by SARS-CoV-2 are importance in African countries, where incidence is among the lowest in the world. Objective: This study aimed at evaluating the exposure to SARS-CoV-2 within a university setting of Cameroon. Methods: A cross-sectional study performed in December 2020 - December 2021, among students and staffs of the Evangelical University of Cameroon. COVID-19 antigen rapid detection test (RDT) was performed using Standard Q Biosensor, and one year after SARS-CoV-2 antibody-test was performed within the same population using RDT and chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA). Results: 106 participants were enrolled (80% students), female sex was the most represented. Positivity to SARS-CoV-2 was 0.0% based on antigen RDTs. The seroprevalence of SARSCoV- 2 antibodies was estimated at 73.6% (95% CI. 64.5-81.0) for IgG and 1.9% (95% CI. 0.2-6.8) for IgM/IgG with RDTs, and 91.9% (95% CI. 84.7-96.4) for anti-nucleocapsid with CLIA. 95.3% (101) reported having developed at least one of the known COVID-19 symptoms (cough and headache being the most common). 90.3% (28) of people who experienced at least one of these symptoms developed IgG antibodies. 40.6% (43) of participants took natural herbs, whereas 55.7% (59) took conventional drugs. The most used herb was Zingiber officinale, while the most used drugs were antibiotics. Conclusion: In this Cameroonian University community, SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence is high, with a greater detection using advanced serological assays. This indicates a wide viral exposure, and the need to adequate control measures especially for those experiencing any related COVID-19 symptoms
