Intuitive perception and the competitive advantage of small family businesses: an exploratory study

    Get PDF
We assess the closeness of perceptions between managers and customers of two small family-owned businesses ("FBs") and two larger non-FBs in Sardinia, Italy, in exploring how local retail shops may compete against international superstores. While the decline of small, High Street businesses has been widely reported, we present a more nuanced perspective of their competitiveness by suggesting how these typically family-run businesses may hold a competitive advantage over larger non-FBs based on their welldeveloped "perceptive concordance" with customers. Our findings have scholarly and managerial implications in the way that both FBs and non-FBs may gain competitive advantage by securing their customers' continuing support

The research was motivated by the low learning outcomes studied economics . This is caused by several factors , among the contributing factors is the method or approach used by teachers is still conventional , less students are actively involved in the learning and assessment that is used is still assessing the results of the assessment process yet . The purpose of this study was to look at differences in student learning outcomes using the inquiry approach to learning directly in SMA Negeri 14 Padang .This research is experimental research and research design used was purposive sampling . The population in this study were all students of class XI IPS SMA Negeri 14 Padang were registered in 2013/2014 , while the samples in this study were students of class XI IPS as an experimental class 5 and class XI IPS 3 as the control class .The data analysis technique used is the t test for normal distribution of data and groups of data have a homogeneous variance . The results showed that the average learning outcomes experimental class is 89.8 while the average of the control class learning outcomes is 80.83 . Based on the analysis of the data obtained , t = 3.631 > table = 1,654 then the decision is H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted .So it can be concluded that there are differences in student learning outcomes using the inquiry approach with conventional learning , where learning using an inquiry approach to higher learning outcomes than learning outcomes using conventional learning . This study is expected to be beneficial to all parties including the school principal to socialize inquiry approach to economic studies teachers in particular , for teachers to be able to apply the approach to inquiry and research institute, and later as reference material for future research . This study is intended to investigate the differences in anti-predator behavioural and acoustic response to terrestrial and aerial predators as well as the behavioural differences between sexes in the red-legged partridge. To this aim we observed the response of 114 partridge (57 males and 57 females) to dummy terrestrial and aerial predators, a raptor and a fox. We divided behavioural responses to predators into four mutually exclusive categories: vigilance, freezing, escape and non-anti-predator behaviours. We also recorded and analysed the vocalizations emitted during tests. The animals reacted differently to aerial and terrestrial stimuli. The reactions elicited by the terrestrial predator were ranked as follows: vigilance, escape, non-anti-predator behaviours, and freezing. Those elicited by the aerial predator were ranked as follows: vigilance, freezing, escape and non-anti-predator behaviours. Vigilance and escape were elicited more frequently by the terrestrial predator than by the aerial predator (vigilance: p 0.001; escape: p 0.001). Freezing was the most frequent behaviour following the appearance of the aerial predator (p 0.001). In fact, freezing may represent an effective strategy in an open space, combining camouflage from and detection by the predator. On the other hand, vigilance is an effective behaviour to detect and avoid a terrestrial predator hunting by ambush. We did not find clear-cut differences between sexes. The analysis of vocalizations revealed that the fox and the raptor elicited significantly different calls (p = 0.003); the fox evoked significantly more vocalizations than the raptor (p 0.001), differing in addition in frequency parameters. Thus partridges not only discriminate between aerial and terrestrial predators and behave consequently, but are also able to tune alarm calls in relation to the context of predation

The Epidemiology of Fractures and Muskulo-Skeletal Traumas During COVID-19 Lockdown: A Detailed Survey of 17.591 Patients in a Wide Italian Metropolitan Area

Introduction: On 9 March 2020 the Italian Government declared a national lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19. The aim of our study was to analyze the effects of such intervention on the traumatological emergency service, with particular emphasis on variations in trauma incidence and patients’ characteristics. Materials and Methods: An observational analysis was performed. Medical records were collected from 3 different trauma centers within a wide metropolitan area, and compared between 2 time periods: the full Italian lockdown period and the same period from the past year. The study population included all patients who were admitted to the Emergency Department (ED). For those who accessed for orthopedic reasons, the analyzed variables included the date of ED admission, age, gender, after visit discharge or hospitalization, place where the injury occurred, traumatic mechanism, diagnosis, relationship with sport activity, and time from injury/symptoms debut to ED access. Results: A total of 17591 ED accesses and 3163 ED trauma visits were identified. During the lockdown, ED trauma visits decreased by -59.8%, but required patient’s hospitalization significantly more frequently. The rate of ED trauma admissions in the elderlies significantly increased, together with the proportion of fragility fractures such as hip fractures. Road accident traumas (-79.6%) and sport-related injuries (-96.2%) significantly dropped. Admissions for less-severe reasons such as atraumatic musculoskeletal pain significantly decreased (-81.6%). Conclusions: The lockdown reduced the pressure on the Health System in at least 2 ways: directly, by curbing viral transmission and indirectly, by more than halving the ED trauma visits. Nonetheless, we observed an increased proportion of traumas in older patients, requiring hospitalizations, while the rate of less-severe cases decreased. This analysis may raise awareness of the effects of a lockdown on trauma services and may be helpful for those ones around the world who are now facing the emergency
