Evaluation of ADAM/1 model for advanced coal extraction concepts
Several existing computer programs for estimating life cycle cost of mining systems were evaluated. A commercially available program, ADAM/1 was found to be satisfactory in relation to the needs of the advanced coal extraction project. Two test cases were run to confirm the ability of the program to handle nonconventional mining equipment and procedures. The results were satisfactory. The model, therefore, is recommended to the project team for evaluation of their conceptual designs

CP Violation in a Multi-Higgs Doublet Model
We study CP violation in a multi-Higgs doublet model based on a horizontal symmetry. We consider two mechanisms for CP violation in this
model: a) CP violation due to complex Yukawa couplings; and b) CP violation due
to scalar-pseudoscalar mixings. We find that the predictions for
, CP violation in B decays and the electric dipole moments
of neutron and electron are different between these two mechanisms. These
predictions are also dramatically different from the minimal Standard Model

Are you using test log-likelihood correctly?
Test log-likelihood is commonly used to compare different models of the same
data or different approximate inference algorithms for fitting the same
probabilistic model. We present simple examples demonstrating how comparisons
based on test log-likelihood can contradict comparisons according to other
objectives. Specifically, our examples show that (i) approximate Bayesian
inference algorithms that attain higher test log-likelihoods need not also
yield more accurate posterior approximations and (ii) conclusions about
forecast accuracy based on test log-likelihood comparisons may not agree with

We study CP violation in a multi-Higgs doublet model based on a horizontal symmetry where CKM phase is not the principal source of CP
violation. We consider two mechanisms for CP violation in this model: a) CP
violation due to complex Yukawa couplings; and b) CP violation due to
scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs boson mixings. Both mechanisms can explain the
observed CP violation in the neutral Kaon system. due to
neutral Higgs boson exchange is small in both mechanisms, but charged Higgs
boson con- tributions can be as large as for a), and for
b). CP violation in the neutral B system is, however, quite different from the
Minimal Standard
Model. The neutron Electric Dipole Moment can be as large as the present ex-
perimental bound, and can be used to constrain charged Higgs boson masses.
The electron
EDM is one order of magnitude below the experimental bound in case b) and

be substantially different from that obtained from other fit to the KM matrix

Texture of fermion mass matrices in partially unified theories
We investigate the texture of fermion mass matrices in theories with partial
unification (for example ) at a scale
GeV. Starting with the low energy values of the masses and the
mixing angles, we find only two viable textures with atmost four texture zeros.
One of these corresponds to a somewhat modified Fritzsch textures. A
theoretical derivataion of these textures leads to new interesting relations

Effects of R-parity violation on direct CP violation in B decays and extraction of
In the standard model, direct CP-violating asymmetries for are roughly 2% based on perturbative calculation. Rescattering effects might
enhance it to at most (20-25)%. We show that lepton-number-violating couplings
in supersymmetric models without R-parity are capable of inducing as large as
100% CP asymmetry in this channel. Such effects drastically modify the allowed
range of the CKM parameter arising from the combinations of the
observed charged and neutral B decays in the modes. With a multichannel
analysis in B decays, one can either discover this exciting new physics, or

The effect of lysolecithin on prostanoid and platelet-activating factor formation by human gall-bladder mucosal cells
It has been demonstrated that lysolecithin (lysophosphatidyl choline, LPC) produces experimental cholecystitis in cats mediated by arachidonic acid metabolites. LPC is a cytolytic agent that has been postulated as a contributing factor in the development of cholecystitis in humans. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of LPC on human gall-bladder mucosal cell phospholipase A2 and cyclooxygenase activity. Gall-bladder mucosal cells were isolated from the gall-bladders of patients undergoing routine cholecystectomy. Fresh, isolated cells were maintained in tissue culture and stimulated with varying doses of LPC. Platelet-activating factor concentration was quantitated as an index of phospholipase A2 activity and prostanoids were measured as an index of cyclooxygenase activity. Also, the effect of LPC on cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 expression in microsomal protein was evaluated. LPC caused dose related increases in 6-keto-PGF1α and PAF produced by human gall-bladder mucosal cells. Exposure of human gall-bladder mucosal cells to LPC failed to elicit expression of constitutive cyclooxygenase-1, while the expression of inducible cyclooxygenase-2 was increased. The results of this study indicate that LPC induces the formation of prostanoids and PAF by human gall-bladder mucosal cells, suggesting that this substance may promote the development of gall-bladder inflammation
