Large Brillouin gain in Germania-doped core optical fibers up to a 98 mol% doping level

International audienceGermanosilicate glasses are substantial materials in fiber optic technology that have allowed the control of optical properties such as numerical aperture, photosensitivity, dispersion, nonlinearity, and transparency toward mid-infrared. Here, we investigate stimulated Brillouin scattering in single-mode germanosilicate core fibers with increasing GeO2 content from 3.6 mol% up to 98 mol%. Our results reveal a wide Brillouin frequency shift tunability over more than 3 GHz with a strong decrease down to 7.7 GHz at high GeO2 content owing to the low acoustic velocity, while the Brillouin linewidth significantly broadens up to 100 MHz beyond 50 mol% of GeO2 content. In addition, large Brillouin gain up to 6.5 times larger than in standard silica fibers is also reported by means of a pump–probe experiment

Phase shaping of dual-pumped Brillouin–Kerr frequency combs

International audienceWe investigate the spectral phase characteristics of dual-pumped Kerr frequency combs generated in a bichromatic Brillouin fiber laser architecture with normal dispersion, producing square-like pulse profiles. Using a pulse shaper, we measure the relative phase between the pump Stokes and adjacent lines, revealing a symmetric phase relationship. Our results highlight good phase coherence of the comb. By manipulating spectral amplitudes and phases, we demonstrate the transformation into various optical waveforms. The stability of our low-noise frequency comb ensures reliable performance in practical settings

Optical Waveform Sculpturing of a Frequency Kerr Comb from a Brillouin Laser Cavity with Bichromatic Pumping

Stimulated Brillouin scattering in silica optical nanofibers

International audienceStimulated Brillouin scattering offers a broad range ofapplications, including lasers, sensors, and microwave photonics,most of which require strong Brillouin gain within a narrowbandwidth. Here, we experimentally report the first measurement ofstimulated Brillouin scattering in silica optical nanofibers fromboth hybrid and surface acoustic waves. Using a pump-probetechnique in the radio-frequency domain, we measured a Brillouingain as high as 15 m−1W−1 and linewidth to 16 MHz for the L03hybrid acoustic mode near 9 GHz using a 990-nm diameter nanofiber.This gain is 65 times larger than the highest gain obtained instandard single-mode fibers. Additionally, we report a Brillouingain of up to 5 m−1W−1 from surface acoustic waves around 5 GHz. Wefurther demonstrate a nanofiber-based Brillouin laser with athreshold of 350 mW. Our results create opportunities for advancedBrillouin-based applications utilizing optical nanofibers

International audienceBroadband coherent light sources consisting of equally-spaced discrete lines in the frequency domain, also called optical frequency combs (OFCs), constitute a very powerful tool in a vast number of applications such as optical frequency metrology, biology, and astronomical spectrograph calibration, optical fiber wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), microwave generation and molecular spectroscopy. The latter application has attracted significant interest especially in the mid-infrared range (from 2-µm to 16-µm) where various relevant molecules, such as carbon dioxide and ammonia, exhibit vibration fingerprints. Watt-level SHG in undoped high step-index PPLN ridge waveguides

International audienceNonlinear quadratic waveguides are key components to obtain efficient frequency conversion. In this paper we present the performances of highly multimode periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) ridge waveguides for high power CW SHG are presented. We report the generation of 1 W of second harmonic on the fundamental guided mode with a conversion efficiency of 56% at telecom wavelengths. A stable nonlinear process is obtained despite use of an undoped congruent LiNbO<sub&gt3</sub&gt crystal. The input damage threshold of the ridge waveguide is found to set the maximum usable power
