Hippocampal sclerosis and status epilepticus - cause or consequence? A MRI study
Background: Transient imaging abnormalities, including changes on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), maybe seen in status epilepticus. These abnormalities can be followed by hippocampal sclerosis. Case report: We report a 15-year-old lady with focal non convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) and focal slowing on EEG. DWI exhibited abnormal hyperintense signals in bilateral temporal and insular cortices. After 3 weeks, MRI performed a localizated hippocampal atrophy. Conclusion: the MRI findings indicated vasogenic and cytotoxic edema during seizure activity and subsequent loss of brain parenchyma.Fleury Inst, Magnet Resonance Imaging Unit, São Paulo, SP, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Neurol, Div Gen Neurol, São Paulo, SP, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Neurol, Div Gen Neurol, São Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc
Comparative study of carbon quantification methods in soil with high Fe contents (Oxisols)
Soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. Therefore, the amount of SOM is important for soil management for sustainable agriculture. The objective of this work was to evaluate the amount of SOM in oxisols by different methods and compare them, using principal component analysis, regarding their limitations. The methods used in this work were Walkley-Black, elemental analysis, total organic carbon (TOC) and thermogravimetry. According to our results, TOC and elemental analysis were the most satisfactory methods for carbon quantification, due to their better accuracy and reproducibility.FAPESPCNP
Tic Disorder: An Unusual Presentation of Neurotoxoplasmosis in a Patient with AIDS
Movement disorders have been increasingly recognized in patients with HIV infection and may be due to distinct causes, as opportunistic infections or medication side effects for example. Parkinsonism, tremor and hemichorea have been more frequently noted in association with HIV and opportunistic infections. However, a variety of involuntary movements have already been described. We report a case of neurotoxoplasmosis in a patient with HIV infection who presented with a dystonic tic involving ocular, oral and cervical movements
