Quantum size effect in Pb(100) films: the role of symmetry and implication for film growth

    Get PDF
We show from density-functional calculations that Pb(100) thin films exhibit quantum size effect with a bilayer periodicity in film energies, film relaxations, and work functions, which originate from different symmetry of the stacking geometry of odd and even layer films. The bilayer periodicity of the film energy is argued to survive on a semiconductor substrate, which should allow the growth of ``magically'' thick even-layer Pb(100) films. Furthermore, it is found that the quantum well states in a simple metal film can be classified into σ\sigma-bonded and π\pi-bonded states, which quantize independently

After the rapid economic growth through reform and opening-up over 40 years, Chinese governments are seeking transformation for high-quality and sustainable development currently. Regional economic development is related to internal and external environments as well as local government’s character behaviors. Employing Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Consciousness-Context-Behavior (CCB) theory, we construct a theoretical framework to measure the relationships between regional development environment (RDE), local government’s character behavior (LGCB), and regional sustainable capability (RSC). We collect the data of 30 provinces in mainland China from 2001 to 2020 to conduct hypothesis testing and empirical analysis. The results show that both RDE and LGCB are associated with RSC, and LGCB significantly mediates the relationship between RDE and RSC. However, the effects of different RDE elements on RSC are heterogeneous. Our study enriches regional sustainable development theory. It arouses us to better understand LGCB and attach importance to the roles of RDE and LGCB in regional sustainability. The enlightenment is important to global developing countries.Po szybkim wzroście gospodarczym poprzez reformy i otwarcie w ciągu 40 lat, chińskie rządy dążą obecnie do transformacji w celu zapewnienia wysokiej jakości i zrównoważonego rozwoju. Regionalny rozwój gospodarczy jest powiązany z otoczeniem wewnętrznym i zewnętrznym oraz charakterem zachowań samorządu terytorialnego. Wykorzystując teorię programowania neurolingwistycznego (NLP) i świadomość-kontekst-behawior (CCB), konstruujemy ramy teoretyczne do pomiaru relacji między środowiskiem rozwoju regionalnego (RDE), zachowaniem charakteru samorządu lokalnego (LGCB) a zrównoważonym potencjałem regionalnym (RSC). Pobudza nas to do lepszego zrozumienia LGCB i przywiązania wagi do roli RDE i LGCB w zrównoważonym rozwoju regionalnym. Oświecenie jest ważne dla globalnych krajów rozwijających się

The Path to Innovation: The Antecedent Perspective of Intellectual Capital and Organizational Character

Purpose: The high-speed growth of China's large-scale new economy indicates that innovation has become the most important economic growth pole. The study aims to explore the structure of the path to innovation, in which we focus on the mediating effect of organizational character.Design/methodology/approach: Considering the indigenous context of China's new economy, the study divides innovation into two types: technological innovation and business model innovation. Then, we build a path model to achieve the innovation by taking intellectual capital and organizational character as antecedents. Finally, a structural equation model is built to measure the path on the basis of sample data collected via a questionnaire survey.Findings: The results indicate that intellectual capital has a significant positive direct effect on technological innovation, but its direct effect on business model innovation is not significant. Organizational character not only mediates the relationship between the intellectual capital and technological innovation, but also plays a mediating role in the effect path from the intellectual capital to business model innovation. In addition, technological innovation has a positive impact on the business model innovation, and mediates the relationship between the intellectual capital and business model innovation.Originality/value: The study takes intellectual capital and organizational character as the common antecedents of innovation and breaks down the content of innovation research into technological innovation and business model innovation. Thus, it establishes a new theoretical analysis framework for dual innovation research and enriches the related theories. The framework would have stronger explanatory power for revealing the innovation strategy and behavior carried out by a large number of corporate organizations in China and the boom of new economy. Furthermore, it would lead enterprises to organize innovation activities more effectively and improve their innovation performances

Experimental upstream transmission of continuous variable quantum key distribution access network

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution which can be implemented using only low-cost and off-the-shelf components reveals great potential in the practical large-scale realization. Access network as a modern network necessity, connects multiple end-users to the network backbone. In this work, we demonstrate the first upstream transmission quantum access networks using continuous-variable quantum key distribution. A two-end-user quantum access network is then experimentally realized. Through phase compensation, data synchronization and other technical upgrades, we achieve 390kbps secret key rate of the total network. In addition, we extend the case of two-end-user quantum access network to the case of multiple users, and analyze the network capacity in the case of multiple users by measuring the additive excess noise from different time slots.Comment: 4 pages,3figure

Non-Hermitian Kibble-Zurek mechanism with tunable complexity in single-photon interferometry

Non-Hermitian descriptions of quantum matter have seen impressive progress recently, with major advances in understanding central aspects such as their topological properties or the physics of exceptional points, the non-Hermitian counterpart of critical points. Here, we use single-photon interferometry to reconstruct the non-Hermitian Kibble-Zurek mechanism and its distinct scaling behavior for exceptional points, by simulating the defect production upon performing slow parameter ramps. Importantly, we are able to realise also higher-order exceptional points, providing experimental access to their theoretically predicted characteristic Kibble-Zurek scaling behaviour. Our work represents a crucial step in increasing the experimental complexity of non-Hermitian quantum time-evolution. It thus also furthers the quest to move the frontier from purely single-particle physics towards increasingly complex settings in the many-body realm.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
