Modeling And Experimental Study On A Direct Expansion Based Enhanced Dehumidification Air Conditioning System

    Get PDF
Direct expansion (DX) air conditioning (A/C) systems are widely used for controlling indoor air temperature and humidity in various buildings in hot and humid climates since they are simpler and more energy efficient, and generally cost less to own and maintain. However, it is often problematic for a DX A/C system to provide desired humidity control due to the current system design trends, variable weather conditions and the commonly used control strategies for DX A/C systems. Therefore, a standalone DX based enhanced dehumidification air conditioning (EDAC) system is proposed to provide suitable indoor humidity control at different seasons. There are two evaporators in the EDAC system, thus it could act as a dehumidifier (ADO mode) on the days when less or no additional cooling is required by employing one evaporator as a reheating coil, or act as an enhanced dehumidification A/C system (EDAC mode) by functioning two evaporators to separately deal with sensible and latent cooling. A prototype experimental EDAC system was established in a laboratory. The operational characteristics of the EDAC system at ADO mode in terms of the moisture removal capacity (MRC), the specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) and the resulted supply air temperature were investigated and reported in this paper. Firstly, the experimental results on operational characteristics are reported. Secondly, the development of a steady-state mathematical model for the ADO mode of the EDAC system is presented. The developed model was thereafter used to study the influence of different sizes of the evaporator and the reheating coil on the operational characteristic of the EDAC system at ADO mode. The study results could lead to a better understanding of the operational characteristics of the EDAC system, facilitating its design, operation and control

Background: Calcium uptake research has a long history. However, the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) protein was first discovered in 2011. As investigations of mitochondrial calcium uniporter represent a new research hotspot, a comprehensive and objective perspective of the field is lacking. Hence, this bibliometric analysis aimed to provide the current study status and trends related to mitochondrial calcium uniporter research in the past decade. Methods: Articles were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection database. We quantified and visualized information regarding annual publications, journals, cocited journals, countries/regions, institutions, authors, and cocited authors by using CiteSpace 5.8. R3 and VOSviewer. In addition, we analysed the citation and keyword bursts related to mitochondrial calcium uniporter studies. Results: From 2011 to 2022, 1,030 articles were published by 5,050 authors from 1,145 affiliations and 62 countries or regions. The country with the most published articles was the United States. The institution with the most published articles was the University of Padua. Rosario Rizzuto published the most articles and was also the most cocited author. Cell Calcium published the largest number of articles, whereas Journal of Biological Chemistry had the most cocitations. The top 5 keywords related to pathological processes were oxidative stress, cell death, permeability transition, apoptosis, and metabolism. MICU1, calcium, ryanodine receptor, ATP synthase and cyclophilin D were the top 5 keywords related to molecules. Conclusion: mitochondrial calcium uniporter research has grown stably over the last decade. Current studies focus on the structure of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter complex and its regulatory effect on mitochondrial calcium homeostasis. In addition, the potential role of mitochondrial calcium uniporter in different diseases has been explored. Current studies mostly involve investigations of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Our analysis provides guidance and new insights into further mitochondrial calcium uniporter research

QR-CLIP: Introducing Explicit Open-World Knowledge for Location and Time Reasoning

Daily images may convey abstract meanings that require us to memorize and infer profound information from them. To encourage such human-like reasoning, in this work, we teach machines to predict where and when it was taken rather than performing basic tasks like traditional segmentation or classification. Inspired by Horn's QR theory, we designed a novel QR-CLIP model consisting of two components: 1) the Quantity module first retrospects more open-world knowledge as the candidate language inputs; 2) the Relevance module carefully estimates vision and language cues and infers the location and time. Experiments show our QR-CLIP's effectiveness, and it outperforms the previous SOTA on each task by an average of about 10% and 130% relative lift in terms of location and time reasoning. This study lays a technical foundation for location and time reasoning and suggests that effectively introducing open-world knowledge is one of the panaceas for the tasks.Comment: Technical Report. A PD Law Based Fuzzy Logic Control Strategy For Simultaneous Control Of Indoor Temperature And Humidity Using A Variable Speed Direct Expansion Air Conditioner

    Get PDF
In small to medium scale buildings located in the subtropics, such as Hong Kong, direct expansion air conditioning (DX A/C) systems are widely applied. This is because, as compared to chilled water based central air conditioning systems, DX A/C systems are compact, flexible for multi-room services, energy efficient and cost less to maintain and operate. However, traditionally, a DX A/C system is equipped with a single-speed compressor and supply air fan, and employs ON / OFF control strategy to maintain indoor air temperature only, leaving the indoor moisture content (or relative humidity) uncontrolled. With the introduction of variable speed technology, the speeds of compressor and supply air fan can be varied continuously so as to realize the simultaneous control of the indoor temperature and humidity. In this paper, the development of a novel control strategy based on PD law and fuzzy logic is reported. The compressor speed was adjusted directly according to the indoor air moisture content and supply air fan speed according to the indoor air temperature, respectively, to realize the simultaneous control of indoor air temperature and humidity. Controllability tests for the novel control strategy were carried out and the test results suggested that, although two control loops for temperature and humidity were significantly coupled, the simultaneous control of indoor temperature and humidity was achieved with respect to control accuracy and sensitivity

RKKY signals characterizing the topological phase transitions in Floquet Dirac semimetals

Recently, the Floquet Na3Bi{\rm Na_3Bi}-type material has been proposed as an ideal platform for realizing various phases, i.e., the spin-degenerate Dirac semimetal (DSM) can be turned into the Weyl semimetal (WSM), and even to the Weyl half-metal (WHM). Instead of the conventional electrical methods, we use the RKKY interaction to characterize the topological phase transitions in this paper. It is found that detecting the Ising term JIJ_I is feasible for distinguishing the phase transition of DSM/WSM, since the emergence of JIJ_I is induced by the broken spin degeneracy. For the case with impurities deposited on zz axis (the line connecting the Weyl points), the Heisenberg term JHJ_H coexists with JIJ_I in the WSM, while JHJ_H is filtered out and only JIJ_I survives in the WHM. This magnetic filtering effect is a reflection of the fully spin-polarized property (one spin band is in the WSM phase while the other is gapped) of the WHM, and it can act a signal to capture the phase transition of WSM/WHM. This signal can not be disturbed unless the direction of the impurities greatly deviates from zz axis. Interestingly, as the impurities are moved into the xx-yy plane, there arises another signal (a dip structure for JHJ_H at the phase boundary), which can also identify the phase transition of WSM/WHM. Furthermore, we have verified that all magnetic signals are robust to the term that breaks the electron-hole symmetry. Besides characterizing the phase transitions, our results also suggest that the Floquet DSMs are power platforms for controlling the magnetic interaction.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figure

On Dynamic Resource Allocation for Blockchain Assisted Federated Learning over Wireless Channels

Blockchain assisted federated learning (BFL) has been intensively studied as a promising technology to process data at the network edge in a distributed manner. In this paper, we focus on BFL over wireless environments with varying channels and energy harvesting at clients. We are interested in proposing dynamic resource allocation (i.e., transmit power, computation frequency for model training and block mining for each client) and client scheduling (DRACS) to maximize the long-term time average (LTA) training data size with an LTA energy consumption constraint. Specifically, we first define the Lyapunov drift by converting the LTA energy consumption to a queue stability constraint. Then, we construct a Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty ratio function to decouple the original stochastic problem into multiple deterministic optimizations along the time line. Our construction is capable of dealing with uneven durations of communication rounds. To make the one-shot deterministic optimization problem of combinatorial fractional form tractable, we next convert the fractional problem into a subtractive-form one by Dinkelbach method, which leads to the asymptotically optimal solution in an iterative way. In addition, the closed-form of the optimal resource allocation and client scheduling is obtained in each iteration with a low complexity. Furthermore, we conduct the performance analysis for the proposed algorithm, and discover that the LTA training data size and energy consumption obey an [O(1/V)\mathcal{O}(1/V), O(V)\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{V})] trade-off. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can provide both higher learning accuracy and faster convergence with limited time and energy consumption based on the MNIST and Fashion-MNIST datasets

Soil Carbon Biogeochemistry in Arid and Semiarid Forests

    Get PDF
Soil is the largest carbon pool in the terrestrial ecosystem. Even small changes in the soil carbon pool would have huge impacts on atmospheric CO2 concentrations and thus mitigate or intensify global warming. Global forest contains 383 ± 30 × 1015 g carbon stock in soils to a 1-m depth, which is approximately 50% of the carbon stored in the atmosphere. Arid and semiarid areas with more than 30% of the world’s land surface are characterized by low and sporadic moisture availability and sparse or discontinuous vegetation, both spatially and temporally. Vegetation, water, and nutrients are intimately coupled in the semiarid environments with strong feedbacks and interactions occurring across fine to coarse scales. In this chapter, we will review the cutting-edge work in forest soil carbon biogeochemistry undertaken in the last three decades. We also attempt to synthesize recent advances in soil carbon biogeochemistry in arid and semiarid regions and discuss future research needs and directions

Modifying the STM Tip for the ' Ultimate ' Imaging of the Si(111)-7×7 Surface and Metal-supported Molecules

    Get PDF
We report on high-resolution STM measurements with modified probe tips. First, both the rest atoms and adatoms of a Si(111)-7×7 surface are observed simultaneously. The visibility of rest atoms is dependent upon the sample bias voltage (less than –0.7 V) and is enhanced by sharpening the tip, which is rationalized by first-principles calculations. Second, a tip with a perylene molecule adsorbed at its apex is used to discriminate the molecular states and the metal states of the underlying Ag(110) surface, which is attributable to a mismatch between the energy levels of the functionalized tip and the adsorbates on silver. Lastly, high-resolution images of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) and zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) molecules on Au(111) are obtained by using an O2-terminated tip, and the images reveal rich intramolecular features arising from molecular orbitals that are not observed when using clean metallic tips
