A nesting conformation of the 5′-bromo-1′,3′-xylyl-18-crown-5·tert-butylammonium hexafluorophosphate complex; the correlation of the structures of crown ether complexes in the solid state and in solution

Single-crystal X-ray analysis of the 5′-bromo-1′,3′-xylyl-18-crown-5· tert-butylammonium hexafluorophosphate complex shows that the complex is of the “nesting” type in which the cation and the aryl group are on the same face of the macroring and that the macroring has a (ag+a) (ag−a) (ag+a) (ag−a)(ag+a) (ag−a) conformation

Environmental sensitivity of n-i-n and undoped single GaN nanowire photodetectors

In this work, we compare the photodetector performance of single defect-free undoped and n-in GaN nanowires (NWs). In vacuum, undoped NWs present a responsivity increment, nonlinearities and persistent photoconductivity effects (~ 100 s). Their unpinned Fermi level at the m-plane NW sidewalls enhances the surface states role in the photodetection dynamics. Air adsorbed oxygen accelerates the carrier dynamics at the price of reducing the photoresponse. In contrast, in n-i-n NWs, the Fermi level pinning at the contact regions limits the photoinduced sweep of the surface band bending, and hence reduces the environment sensitivity and prevents persistent effects even in vacuum

Why Do Parents with Toddlers Store Poisonous Products Safely?

    Get PDF
Unintentional poisoning is a major cause of nonfatal injuries in children aged 0–24 months. Associations between self-reported habits on the child safe storage of medication and cleaning products and family, and psychosocial factors were assessed, using a model based on the Protection Motivation Theory. By identifying correlates of safety behavior in this manner, more insight in factors which influence this behavior is obtained. Health promotion activities in order to promote safety behavior should address these factors in order to increase the effectiveness of the health message. Data were gathered from a cross-sectional survey using self-administered questionnaires, mailed to a population sample of 2470 parents with toddlers. The results indicate that the promotion of safe storage of medication and cleaning products should address the family situation, personal cognitive factors as well as social factors. Interventions should particularly focus on parents' self-efficacy of storing poisonous products in a child safe manner and on the vulnerability of their child in their home concerning an unintentional poisoning incident

Application of the Cluster Variation Method to Spin Ice Systems on the Pyrochlore Lattice

The cactus approximation in the cluster variation method is applied to the spin ice system with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic coupling. The temperature dependences of the entropy and the specific heat show qualitatively good agreement with those observed by Monte Carlo simulations and experiments, and the Pauling value is reproduced for the residual entropy. The analytic expression of the q-dependent magnetic susceptibility is obtained, from which the absence of magnetic phase transition is confirmed. The neutron scattering pattern is also evaluated and found to be consistent with that obtained from Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

Effect of HCl on the doping and shape control of silicon nanowires

    Get PDF
International audienceThe introduction of Hydrogen Chloride during the in-situ doping of Silicon Nanowires (SiNWs) grown using the Vapour Liquid Solid (VLS) mechanism was investigated. Compared with non-chlorinated atmospheres, the use of HCl with dopant gases considerably improves the surface morphology of the SiNWs, leading to extremely smooth surfaces and a greatly reduced tapering. The variations in the wire diameter are massively reduced for boron doping, and can not be measured at 600°C for phosphorous over several tens of micrometers. This remarkable feature is accompanied by a frozen gold migration from the catalyst, with no noticeable levels of gold clusters observed using scanning electron microscopy. A detailed study of the NWs apparent resistivity reveals that the dopant incorporation is effective for both types of doping. A graph linking the apparent resistivity to the dopant to silane dilution ratio is built for both types of doping and discussed in the frame of the previous results
